Dear Colleague, This is to notify you that one or more objects in which you are designated for notification have been modified in the NZRR routing registry database. These objects are used to configure the various NZIX route servers (http://nzix.net/) so you can expect the relevant servers to be reloaded in the near future. Hi Folks, For the benefit of those who spend more time wrangling layer 7 than layer 2, who have been missing the System Administration tutorial stream at NZNOG, Simon Lyall and I are running a similar miniconf at Linux.Conf.Au 2011, being held in Brisbane. The organisers of the Systems Administration Miniconf would like to invite proposals for presentations to be delivered at the Miniconf. Format of Presentations ----------------------- We are now seeking proposals for presentations at the mini-conference. We have openings for: - 45 minute double-length presentations - 20 minute full presentations - 10-20 minute "How we do things" presentations - 5-10 minute "lightning talks" Please note, due to the single day available, we expect the majority of available timeslots to be 20 minutes long or less. The 10-20 minute "How we do things" presentations are intended for people to talk about their sites. Information could include: Servers, talks, tools, people and roles, experiences, software, operating systems, monitoring, alerting, provisioning etc. The intent is to give attendees a picture of what is happening in the "real world" and some understanding of how other sites work, as well as offer you a chance to get suggestions on other tools and practices that might help your site. Rent servers by the Hour?

Just wondering if anybody else rents servers or VPSes by the hour in NZ apart from Orcon? Sort of an EC2 type setup. I thought there was another vendor ( Inspire? ) when I last looked but I can't see anything else now. After something that I can provision in a few minutes, run a webserver on for a few hours and then shutdown again. Routing problems???

Sorry for the wooliness of this post, but I'm wondering if anyone has any comments on this... I have a customer with a site at net24.co.nz, which is on snap. This morning - as with a number of others over the last week or so - he's complained that he can't access his site. He's on callplus, and a traceroute shows him going via commverge.net.nz to tranzpeer to connect at snap.ape.net.nz I'm on voda, and have had no problems whatsoever... routing via ihug to connect with snap.wix.net.nz Have there been problems lately with his routing? This really messes up the naive best-of-three type algorithm that most people think will work. If the servers are set to trust only their own GPS (and not the other GPS clocks), then you may not be vulnerable to byzantine failures. Hope you're all okay over in Christchurch and other areas that were affected. Any major effects on telecommunications? Saw a drop off in NZ traffic at about the time it happened, but it's not clear if they were related. MMC

New NTP service

Hi All We needed to invest in new NTP servers and we've decided to make them available to the NZ sysadmin community to use as well. This is not an open public service as we have to have a minimal AUP to stop the servers being overwhelmed but you should find you can use them for pretty much all you need without contacting us. The servers use GPS as their primary time sources and have rubidium oscillators for stability if the GPS signal is lost.
