OARC 39 will be a two-day hybrid meeting held on 22 & 23 October in Belgrade, Serbia at 10:00 AM (Local time - CEST (UTC+02:00)) The onsite part of the meeting will be colocated with RIPE 85. The Programme Committee is seeking contributions from the community. All DNS-related subjects and suggestions for discussion topics are welcome. For inspiration, we provide a non-exhaustive list of ideas: - Operations: Any operational gotchas, lessons learned from an outage, details/reasons for a recent outage (how to improve TTR, tooling). - Deployment: DNS config management and release process. - Monitoring: Log ingestion pipeline, analytics infrastructure, anomaly detection. - Scaling: DNS performance management and metrics. Advice regarding selling a /24

Hi All, I've been directed to this mailing list by a work colleague as a place to ask advice regarding selling a /24. I was recently approached by a relative regarding an IPv4 /24 block, as he received an email from APNIC stating that a membership account would need to be opened, and the block validly claimed by 1 Jan 2023, or they would be placed into reserved status. They were assigned around 1992 and haven't been used for anything since at least the early 2000s. As they predate APNIC, they're deemed "historical resources". He has no need for a block this size and is hence looking to sell it. I've not dealt with such things before so am looking for some advice as how I would go about doing so. It seems like using an IP broker might be a way forward (though I couldn’t find any based in NZ, I assume any would do, especially with inter-RIR transfers possible). Another way might be to contact ISPs directly? Either way, I’m assuming (and correct me if I’m wrong here) he’d have to open a membership account and properly claim the IPs before any sale would be possible. This looks like it would cost around 1700 NZD so I’m trying to get an idea of the process before committing to that. Regards, Thomas

the data shows a slightly higher IPv6 use on weekends and public holidays over weekdays. This pattern is more widespread than just NZ of course. Hi NZNOG folk, I was reading an ETNO report about problems with Broadband deployment in Europe (https://www.etno.eu/news/all-news/8-news/742-8-questions-fair-contribution.…) and similar issues in Korea, where the carriers are advancing the proposition “the big streamers should pay”. But I also read somewhere that NZ in well underway with Gbps consumer services and there seems to be no such problems from the carriers in NZ. I know it's a very generic question, but I was wondering, what is the current picture on price and performance of retail fibre broadband services in New Zealand? thanks, Geoff

routing problem?

Hi all, Hopefully this is acceptable here ... I have a VPS (with a well-known NZ provider) which I can ping, but can't ssh to. tcptraceroute stops a couple of hops in (I think the first to not respond is our immediate ISP's immediate upstream). From a different house/ISP, I can connect fine, and from here, I can connect to a different VPS (same provider, different network block) I'm reasonably confident it's not firewall, partly from extensive testing, and partly because the same behaviour is shown when running tcptraceroute to the gateways of the respective VPS. Any thoughts? The fact that the traces make it part way suggest to me that it's a routing problem, but then how does ping work? I could include tcptraceroute results, but is it considered ok to reveal ISPs etc? My email probably reveals it all anyway, of course ... :-) Cheers, Richard

Multiple large Auckland fibre outages

Heh guys. Has anyone got any usable updates, re the current large fibre outages in Auckland? Not getting any updates from normal channels. Over 600 hectares of lost fibre coverage in Te Atatu Peninsula and some of Te Atatu South - for 21 hours now. Hi Team, We have recently acquired a new subnet(202.73.28.0/23) and have updated all of the usual Geolocation providers, but we are still experiencing issues with Disney+, Lotto and Trade Me. NZNOG 2022 Registrations Now Open

The NZNOG Trust is pleased to announce that registrations for NZNOG 2022 are now open. NZNOG 2022 is planned [1] to be held from 26th to 28th Jan, 2022 in Wellington at the InterContinental. We will have a tutorials day on the 26th, then conference proper on the 27th and 28th. Xtra RBL Block

Long time listener, first time caller. Could someone from Xtra/Spark please contact me off-list to address this issue, or someone point me in the right direction. Our server, that hosts a number of domains, crashed and burned at the end of last week and we have moved our services to a cloud-based server. Everything is working fine, except for email from anyone to an @xtra.co.nz address. I have tried calling both the Xtra and Spark Broadband service desks and just get the runaround. One guy hung up on me when I may have been a bit terse (but didn't swear!) after over an hour and several people who just didn't get it. The second one went round in circles where they told me the issue had to be raised by an Xtra users... I find it hard to believe that we're the culprit, as the block was immediate, so may reflect a previous occupier in that network block. MXToolbox says that our IP address isn't on a block list. * * *The NZNOG Trustees invite presentation proposals for the 18th (mostly) annual NZNOG conference, to be hosted at the Intercontinental Hotel in central Wellington on January 26-28th, 2022. With the conference there will be a day of tutorials on the 25th Jan. Back-up dates pencilled in are April 6-8th 2022.* * Conference objective: The NZNOG conference, workshops and tutorials are an opportunity for individuals and organisations involved in Internet operations to meet and share the latest in Internet operations, technologies, practices and receive high quality training. The event is unique in New Zealand and attracts technical, skilled individuals with a genuine interest in Internet operations and Internetworking technologies. Submissions on any aspect of networking are welcome however we are particularly interested in talks that involve real world deployment experience, particularly in New Zealand. To keep with our objectives, we are aiming that this conference is a largely, in-person event. However, we will be accepting a small number of presentations from overseas speakers who cannot attend NZNOG in person. We do understand that flexibility is required this year and encourage interested presenters to discuss options with us. Submit a proposal: Presenters are invited to submit talk proposals for consideration by 26th November, 2021. Talks may be accepted earlier. Please provide your talk title, a short presenter bio and an abstract of the talk. Abstracts should be no more than one page long and provide a summary of your networking related subject matter. Normally presentations are 30 min long, are video streamed live and slide decks are posted to the NZNOG website. NZNOG 2022 Conference Announcement

Hi all The NZNOG Trust wishes to announce the NZNOG 2022 conference. We will aim to host this from January 26-28th, 2022, in Wellington at the Intercontinental Hotel. As usual, the conference will be on Thursday and Friday, with some tutorials available on Wednesday. More details on the conference will be posted to our website when available. Expect a further announcement when registrations open. As usual, a social function will be held on the Thursday night of the conference. NZNOG has been running for many years and is highly regarded for both its content and the community aspect of the conference. Due to this, if the ongoing Covid-19 Pandemic does not allow our standard, expected conference in January 2022, the NZNOG Trustees will postpone or cancel the conference. We have secured a tentative, backup dates of April 6-8th 2022, however, if this is still impacted by Covid-19 we will need to cancel for 2022. We are seeking sponsors and have recently finalised our sponsorship document for NZNOG 2022. In response to feedback from operational security communities, CAIDA's source address validation measurement project (https://spoofer.caida.org) is automatically generating monthly reports of ASes originating prefixes in BGP for systems from which we received packets with a spoofed source address. We are publishing these reports to network and security operations lists in order to ensure this information reaches operational contacts in these ASes. Hey, I just got a spam call from a Wellington number (hilarious as it was a robot pretending to be The Australian NBN wanting to disconnect me, thanks NZ for trolling!). I suspect it’s a compromised serviced, but maybe just CLI overstamping. I’ve emailed the business concerned, but is there an easy way of figuring out the provider to alert them? Hi NZNOG Community, A discussion in the RIPE DB-WG in 2020 and 2021 has explored the addition of a geofeed: marker in RPSL (in inetnum, inet6num objects) https://www.ripe.net/ripe/mail/archives/db-wg/2020-October/006657.html https://www.ripe.net/ripe/mail/archives/db-wg/2021-January/006771.html This is in relation to work under consideration in the IETF Operations and Management Area Working Group (opsawg) https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-opsawg-finding-geofeeds/ Geofeeds are defined in RFC8805 (https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc8805) They are a format for a network operator to publish a mapping of IP address prefixes to simplified geolocation information, colloquially termed a "geolocation feed” The DB-WG has been discussing adding a field to RPSL inetnum and inet6num objects, to permit resource holders to publish a URL to their own RFC8805 data to inform people where to find it. As discussed at the RIPE81 meeting (https://ripe81.ripe.net/presentations/27-RIPE81_geofeeds_discovery.pdf) this mechanism has been adopted by Google and other geolocation providers and over 1000 geofeed sources now exist worldwide. APNIC Secretariat has an opportunity to update our systems to support use of the geofeed: field in inetnum and inet6num Whois objects. AS4770 and proxy

I am seeing some traffic from a few IP addresses in the AS4770 space (ICONZ). This traffic come with a few different user-agents but all these browsers are used across different IP addresses - and reCAPTCHA is marking all of them as bots. All those IP respond to port 10002 requests as WonderProxy (wonderproxy.com) I am not sure those are business IPs or some residential IP being used as exit for this service without people knowing. I've had 2 calls today from a USA number (At 7:40am and 12:30 pm ) trying to sell me BGP network monitoring software. I think they may be calling ISP NOC's from the NOC list (Not a recent copy) . NZNOG 2021 - Delay

The NZNOG Trust has unfortunately had to postpone and potentially cancel the NZNOG Conference that under normal conditions would be held at the end of January 2021. Although the latest CoVID outbreaks appear to be over and we are all back to level 1, there are still some big uncertainties that make the event too risky. - Another outbreak is still possible that may result in travel and group limitations. Although we could schedule the meeting somewhere less likely to have an outbreak than Auckland we are reliant on Aucklanders attending so that would not help. - NZNOG is quite dependent on international input for both Sponsorship and Speakers. At present it is not possible to get overseas speakers in to the country, which traditionally is more than 50% of our program. Sponsors are also doubtful, and that is more than 50% of our income for the conference. We are still working on options to hold an NZNOG Conference in 2021. Later this year or early next we will consider an event around May/June 2021. Another option may be mini events for all or part of a day for smaller numbers of people. We are not considering a virtual event as there doesn't seem to be anything we can offer different to APNIC or other virtual event hosts. Richard Nelson for NZNOG Trust

Has anyone heard of a network provider in NZ named HSL? We have a router at a clients that is managed by “HSL” but no oneseems to know who HSL is. Good morning A few weeks ago I've started hosting a youtube/twitch/twitter live video show (simultaneous stream) hosting key people who are involved in the exec/operations/engineering of internet infrastructure companies either as consumer or service providers. my idea is to create a platform where questions/concerns can be asked directly to executives/key decision-makers and hopefully get answers. Very similar to Reddit AMA but with focus on telecom/datacenter/infrastructure/DNS/etc. For example, I will have execs from zayo, Windstream, aqua comms, packet fabric this week as my guests where you will be able to ask questions directly. There is also a 1-1 discussion with APNIC's Chief Scientist Geoff Houston about internet growth during lockdowns, and more. NZ Working From Home Traffic Profile

With lots of New Zealanders and other countries citizens are working from home and the jump in residential Broadband traffic, I am interested in the NZ operators observations. There are few published charts in the NZ Herald article from Chorus and UFF showing phenomenal increase in traffic. In my opinion this is an event that we should document and learn from. I have few questions 1) The jump in residential day time peak ~2PM , is it equal to a drop in business daytime peak ? 2) How do you explain the jump in night time peak (probably people are not going out and are now streaming at home?

Hi all, Our friends at Chorus have put together a tour of their Auckland lab for the NZNOG community. Details are below. Any questions, please drop either myself or Brent Marquis a line. If you haven’t been to the Chorus lab, it’s certainly an interesting place to check out, and will be a good chance to ask questions and see how some cool technologies work. Note that you do not need to be a Chorus customer to attend - but per below you do need to be a network operator of some description so we can keep it technical and conversation free flowing. -- The NZNOG Chorus Lab Tour Off the back of a couple of talks at the NZNOG 2020 conference, Chorus would like to keep the NZNOG community engagement running. We would like to offer a tour of the Chorus fibre lab, hosted by Brent and Kurt. This will certainly have a Chorus Network Technology and innovation focus, not sales and marketing :) We will provide a guided tour of the lab - showcasing new innovations like Hyperfibre and WiFi ONTs alongside a view of the physical network deployment and a demo of air blown fibre. It will be an open session where you can ask the hosts questions as we go. To top it off, will put on some nibbles and drinks after the tour. There are a couple of important points… This session is anticipated to be attended by the trusted NZ network operator community, and we encourage attendees to be open and forthcoming with their questions and discussion As such, this is not open to the public outside the trusted NZ network operator community. The NZNOG community traditionally comprises RSPs, LFCs, NZ telcos, and those operate a sizeable IT network or other critical infrastructure. We collect some information at registration to assist with this. That information will not be retained or used for any purpose other than verifying attendee eligibility. If the event gets too big, we reserve the right to cancel registrations. Be aware this is on a weekday!
