.nz Name Server Replacement

Over the last few weeks the New Zealand Registry Service (NZRS), has been working on the changes required to replace the .nz name server operated by TelstraClear (NS4.DNS.NET.NZ) with a new server operated and managed by the NZRS. The changes for the replacement server are now complete and the new server is in operation. The new IP address for NS4 has been made to the root servers by IANA. There is no impact on the .nz DNS as a result of the change. The new IP address for NS4.DNS.NET.NZ is 202.46.189.130. The new name server uses a technology called ‘anycast’ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anycast) and will enable NZRS to add additional servers to other parts of the network if required. It will also lead to greater reporting and monitoring of the .nz name servers. NZNOG 09 - Call for Participation and Papers The next conference of the New Zealand Network Operators' Group is to be held in Auckland, New Zealand between 26 January and 30 January 2009. Our host is FX Networks. NZNOG meetings provide opportunities for the exchange of technical information and discussion of issues relating to the operation and support of network services, with particular emphasis on New Zealand. The conference is low priced and has a strong technical focus with the aim and history of getting a strong turnout of technical personal from New Zealand Internet orientated companies. Conference Overview ------------------- NZNOG 2009 will consist of up to three days of workshops and tutorials followed by two days of conference presentations. There will also be opportunity for more informal and small lightening talks. These are typically around five minutes long and are organised closer to the actual conference. Important Dates --------------- Call for Papers opens: 1 September 2008 Deadline for speaker submissions: 30 September 2008 Responses to speaker submissions: 7 November 2008 Draft program published: 7 November 2008 Final program published: 1 December 2008 NZNOG 2009 Conference: 26 - 30 January 2009 SIG / Miniconf / Tutorials / Workshops -------------------------------------- In previous years we have had a single day of workshops and tutorials, this year however we are looking at having up to three days of workshops and tutorials, if we can get the submissions. Examples of past activities workshops include 'MPLS and fixed access networks for beginners', 'Mikrotik RouterOS Training', 'APNIC Internet Resource Management Essentials', and a System Administrators mini-conference which included talks on 'Using Debian packages for system administration' and '42 hosts in 1U: Using virtual machines'. Conference Presentations ------------------------ The main conference program for 2009 will be made up of two days with a single stream where possible. Presentations don't need to fit any particular fixed length and can be from 30 minutes to 3 hours in length. NZNOG conferences have traditionally spanned the entire operational spectrum, and then some. Proposals for conference presentations are invited for virtually any topic with a degree of relevance to the NZNOG community. There is a strong orientation to offer core skills and basic knowledge in the SIGs and to address issues relevant to the day-to-day operations of ISPs and network operators in the conference sessions. The inclusion of a title, bio, topic, abstract, and slides with proposals is not compulsory but each will help us determine the quality of your proposal and increase the likelihood it will be accepted. Final slides are to be provided by 16 January 2009. Note: While the majority of speaking slots will be submitted by 30 September 2008, a limited number of slots may be available for presentations that are exceptionally timely, important, or of critical operational importance. The NZNOG conference is a TECHNICAL conference so marketing and commercial content is NOT allowed within the program. The program committee is charged with maintaining the technical standard of NZNOG conferences, and will therefore not accept inappropriate materials. Funding and Support ------------------- NZNOG conferences are community run and funded events that try to keep the cost to attendees as low as possible so generally we are unable to pay the travel costs of speakers. Discounts for SIG and lightning talk presenters may be available but are not automatic. This is a good opportunity to get your pet topic out there or perhaps to get some experience with presenting without having to go to a full talk. Does anyone have any information about Annex M support (or potential) within New Zealand? FYI - Annex M is a version of ADSL2+ that allows increased upload speed at the expense of decreased download speed. It is backwards compatible with existing Annex A equipment. Michael

My policy on s92 is currently that any customer who is _convicted_ of copyright infringement (using their Internet service via us) in a New Zealand court will have their account terminated, or if we are legally instructed to do so by means of a court injunction or order. The Minister can't have it both ways - if Internet access is a "human right", then the standard for termination would have to be quite high and the quality of evidence necessary to secure that conviction also high. If e-Government is a guaranteed way of doing business with citizens, and some citizens are disenfranchised by having access terminated on a low-quality evidence takedown notice, then there's an obvious conflict. We don't take away driving licences on allegations of illegality; we do so on the basis of convictions (and even then, not always). We don't take away mail delivery on allegations of illegality; we do so on the basis of convictions or on _evidence_ that conditions of use have been breached. The argument that ISPs are in a unique position to proactively filter and control customer traffic in the case of alleged infringement is bogus. Copyright holders have mechanisms to protect their rights and they have the duty to do so. Get a search warrant, add a lawful intercept, archive the offending Web site (get Natlib to help here). Don't attempt to take a technical shortcut to solve a social problem that ends up diluting the evidence base.

This is, I believe, an operational issue... I was reading this Computerworld story over the weekend: http://computerworld.co.nz/news.nsf/news/117D6C93C541D21ACC2574EF00185387 in which Mathew Bolland of TelstraClear says: 'TelstraClear’s head of corporate services, Mathew Bolland, says from November 1, if TelstraClear hosts a website and someone phones up complaining that site has breached their copyright, TelstraClear will have to take the site down. “We don’t check or verify,” he says. “We take it down.”' When Section 92A popped up, this is what everyone thought would happen, but assumed wouldn't because in Bolland's words, "this is a ridiculous situation." Presumably, the take-downs will only happen for individual sites and those of small businesses unable to stump up the big legal fees to contest such actions - or is everyone affected, no matter what size? Hi all: Thanks to those of you who have contacted me after reading this thread. If you have not read our FAQ, we have addressed several of the issues that were raised here in that document: http://www.natlib.govt.nz/about-us/news/20-october-2008-web-harvest-faqs There are also a few new issues raised here that I’ll be adding to the FAQ shortly, particularly around notifying webmasters in advance and harvesting from an international service, both of which we could have handled better: 1. Several people have asked about notification, and some you have made practical and workable suggestions about how we can handle this better next time. In the current crawl, we could not see a good way to do so without effectively becoming spammers. In hindsight we could have communicated better with webmasters. When we decide to run the harvest again, we will make more of an effort to publicise the harvest in mailing lists and groups frequented by webmasters (such as this one). 2. Others ask why we are harvesting from the USA and not New Zealand? We have contracted the Internet Archive to conduct the harvest because they are the single most experienced provider of large-scale crawling services in the world. An unfortunate offshoot of this is that their servers are based in the USA. We hope that after observing the experts at work we'll be able to manage future harvests from within New Zealand. At the very least we have learned that we should locate some of the harvest servers in New Zealand. 3. Bmannign asks whether this is a recurring or once-off harvest? While we have not planned any further harvests at this time, it is likely that domain harvests will become a feature of the Library’s overall web harvesting programme. Analysis of the current harvest and research into various access issues will help determine frequency. Finally, As we have seen in other forums, a lot of you object to our robots.txt policy. Again, I can only say we understand your point of view, but in the context of this crawl we believe it is important that we harvest as much of the domain as possible, in order to preserve the web as it is today for the New Zealanders and researchers of the future. Simon Lyall illustrates our dilemma exactly above: people use robots.txt for different reasons, and in a perfect world (or possibly even an imperfect one where robots.txt developed into a standard) we would know why each robots.txt rule was written, and crawl more appropriately. CCIP ALERT: Exploitation of MS08-067

Good Afternoon, For those of you who are not already aware, CCIP would like to bring your attention the the Critical Microsoft Security Bulletin MS08-067 that was released today: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS08-067.mspx Microsoft have announced a vulnerability in the Server Service that could allow remote code execution. Administrators are advised to patch immediately. Microsoft have reported limited, targeted attacks attempting to exploit the vulnerability. CCIP has been made aware of two exploits that have been developed so far for this vulnerability since its release this morning. CCIP is concerned that a worm may be developed that would utilise these exploits. Hi All, This was news to me ('till international traffic on some of my sites began to climb); The National Library is this month ripping the entire NZ Internet ..... from an international host ..... blatantly ignoring robots.txt http://www.natlib.govt.nz/about-us/current-initiatives/web-harvest-2008 International traffic in NZ often costs end customers real money (especially in colo situations). A site I'm involved with, entirely NZ oriented content, served up 2GB to these guys in one day (that's half a normal month of international). Nevermind the sovereignty question; presumably the goal is that by the end of Oct the entire NZ Internet will be mirrored at nlnzdata000.us.archive.org :-/ Anyone else raging about this? Ignoring the robots.txt issue, why couldn't this have been done over national links? Or damn, at the very least they could have pinged off an email to webmaster(a)target.co.nz ahead of ripping the site to let admins get prepared? M.

These objects are used to configure the various NZIX route servers (http://nzix.net/) so you can expect the relevant servers to be reloaded in the near future. Dynamic/Static allocations for DSL

G'day, I'm about to switch ADSL providers, and that caused me to stop and think about dynamic/static IP addresses and ADSL. Mainly because I'll have an always on connection[0], yet I'll still have a dynamic address, or I need to pay $10/month for a static IPv4. It has been suggested to me that one of the reasons that DSL connections in NZ tend to have dynamic addresses is due to an APNIC policy. Can anyone here point me towards it? The best I've found is a slide deck from their Internet Resource Management course[1] which says that dynamic addressing is encouraged, but I haven't found any policy documents to back that up. It fact it seems that APNIC policy is opposite to that. The assumption in the APNIC IPv4 Guidelines[2] is that DSL connections are permanent 'net connections and therefore are normally assigned static IPs. And yes, I am using dynamic DNS at the moment. It looks like I will continue to do so, but it'd be nicer to have a static IPv4 address. It seems crazy to have to pay for the benefit of an allocated IPv4 address when I'll always be using one anyhow. Cheers! Hello NZNog, We (Vocus) are just in the final stages of getting approval to build our Vocus POP into Auckland. One of the questions asked by our board was if there was interest in a native IPv6 service delivered at Sky Tower. Submarine cable exposed by erosion on Murawai Beach

Hi all, while doing a bit of off roading at Murawai Yesterday, I came across this exposed submarine cable. It could be one of the older Pacrim or Tasman cables but I suspect it may be the Southern Cross Western cable. I would hope the appropriate people might be on this list to recognize the cable and initiate remedy action as the cable is in a very public and exposed position. http://tonyw.com/cable-2.htm There are some Telecom cable warning signs further back in line with the cable, and next stop from Murawai in the direction the cable is going is Australia. Auckland datacenters

Hi all. I'm looking for somewhere to put servers and stuff in Auckland. Central is better, but I'm open to alternatives. I've talked to a few places, but they are adverse to more than 10A per rack and other silly things. Attempting to work through it, but.. yeah. Any recommendations (offlist) would be nice. If desired, I can summarise back to the list. I'm more interested in neutral places than anywhere run by an ISP, mainly because I don't want to have to move gear, or be treated like a lower class citizen if I move away from their transit. Not saying it would happen, but independence is healthy. The possibility for caged space is also nice. There's one or two obvious places, but bear in mind that I'm thinking about 5 racks immediately, maybe 10 within 12 months, maybe more. The obvious places aren't big enough. Alternatively, if anyone has a need for something like this then let me know and we can collaborate. -- Nathan Ward

UPS information

Hey Noggers, We're in a position where we're going to require a UPS at one of our pop's, and being that i've personally never actually had to buy/provision any UPS gear before, i thought i'd put the question out there, what UPS gear have people here in NZ generally found to be pretty good? is the cost of these units going to bite me hard? is there anyone specialized that should perhaps talk to? (APC comes to mind?) The loading on it should be pretty minimal, (couple switches, a gateway box, possibly a server). Hi NZNOG Community, ________________________________________________________________________ IPv6 Penetration Survey final reminder ________________________________________________________________________ Almost seven hundred organizations have responded thus far to the IPv6 Penetration Survey. Sponsored by ARIN, in cooperation with the Cooperative Association for Internet Data Analysis (CAIDA), this survey is gathering data regarding current and future use of IPv6 around the world. We cordially invite and encourage all organizations in the AfriNIC, APNIC, ARIN, LACNIC, and RIPE NCC regions to participate in the survey so we can establish a comprehensive view of present IPv6 penetration and future plans for IPv6 deployment. The survey opened on 8 September and remains available until 17:00 EDT on 1 October 2008. The results of the survey will be presented and discussed at the ARIN XXII Public Policy and Members Meeting to be held in Los Angeles, CA 15-17 October 2008. Additionally, the summary results will be shared with all the RIRs for further distribution within their respective regions. The survey data will support ongoing research. The survey is composed of 22 questions that can be answered in a few minutes. This is a secure survey, and all data will be presented in summary form only and kept confidential between ARIN and CAIDA. CISCO Advise sought.

Hello, We are having some issues with our very basic Cisco configuration, that we cant seem to track down. (Random disconnections to only one host) I am not sure if this is the right forum, so if you believe it's not please stop reading. If you notice something obviously wrong with the config snippet at the bottom, please advise, and a beer is on offer. If you need more information than what was is provided below, and you would be keen to give up some of your valuable time for beer, please contact me off list. If you are still reading then you clearly do think this might be an appropriate place for questions of this nature, here goes the config snippet. All comments off list. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Currently we have the following: ip nat pool ST_NAT_POOL 192.168.202.74 192.168.202.74 prefix-length 24 ip nat inside source route-map ST_NAT_MAP pool ST_NAT_POOL overload access-list 164 remark Some Telco (NAT) access-list 164 permit ip 192.168.254.0 0.0.0.255 1.2.3.0 0.0.0.255 access-list 164 permit ip 123.12.123.0 0.0.0.224 1.2.3.0 0.0.0.255 route-map ST_NAT_MAP permit 100 match ip address 164 We do some NAT on packets heading to some telco that go out our default route, and our ISP does some magic.. more info if needed. We had the following line in and the problem was still there however Cisco said it was bad, so we removed it and replaced it with the above explicit hosts, but the problem still appears. access-list 164 permit ip any 1.2.3.0 0.0.255 Basically we get random disconnections, but only to this Some Telco we have other connections to other telco's that are OK, these are natted, but are talking direct to a public IP, or are VPN'ed. This configuration is on a replacement Cisco, the old Cisco, with a very similar config, works fine, but has other issues which is why we need to replace it. Thanks and any comments please off list.

Sell me your unused outbound capacity.

Sorry for this post, but it's a request that few sales droids understand, this seems to be the only way to get it to all the people in-country who do understand this without having to call you all up individually. My current colocation provider have consistently demonstrated their inability to provide service to the CIR that I pay for, so I'm looking around at alternative options. If you are a provider with lots of megabits of traffic that is predominantly inbound (ie. you have lots of customers on ADSL tails or whatever), you have lots of outbound capacity that you're paying for but not selling. Sell it to me, cheaper than your sales droids would normally sell a symmetric circuit for, because I'm the opposite of you - I push significantly more traffic than I than pull - and I don't want to buy bits I don't use either. I'm interested in both international and domestic capacity, for web hosting and media streaming (no, not for P2P or anything like that). IPv6 is a bonus. Also, anyone else who has a similar need for outbound capacity for this sort of thing give me a yell, it might be worthwhile hooking up. All responses off-list please, including flames. Um, beer for anyone who hooks me up with someone I eventually buy from. Phew. Beer flowing in the same direction as the money, *and* a preference for IPv6 service? Tomorrow is 23 September and TVNZ 7 and InternetNZ have their ICT Debate scheduled to start at around 9pm, after the news. While you wait for this exciting event to start, you can watch the Tawa Schools Music Festival, live from the Michael Fowler Center in Wellington. http://www.r2.co.nz/20080923 starting at 7:30pm and running for around 2 hours. On 4 Oct 1994, our first public webcast, was the Tawa Schools Music Festival, so the webcast tomorrow is for us a trip down memory lane. Its also a fun event. You can see the 1994 event at http://www.r2.co.nz/19941004 In 1994, the MFC was connected to the Internet by fiber via WCC, which was connected to VUW by 2Mbps microwave. The concert webcast had 16 viewers in 12 countries. It impressed then Mayor Fran Wilde so much that she wrote about it in her weekly column in the Evening Post. So maybe a question for the politicians in the debate is - why after 14 years are people still debating whether we need fiber ? Why is it all taking so long ? MTUs on internet transit and peering

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has seen a general trend to supporting >1500B MTUs on Internet transit and peering sessions? I recall from years ago that AGC/ANC/PacNet supported interface-default MTUs, meaning that ATM connected customers had 4470B MTU. Obviously these days with most people running GE or XE in their networks with MPLS and 802.1Q you are looking at networks capable internally of jumbograms, but is anyone running this across network boundaries? Are there any plans for the NZ IXs to be jumbo-capable? I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who is jumbo-enabled on their transit connections, and particularly interested in hearing if they are seeing any significant number of packets that are >1500B on the Internet. aj

Net outage last night?

Good Morning, At approx. 2:30am on 4th September 2008 we experienced a very odd outage, that Orcon support knows nothing about. Just wanted to see if anyone else experienced a similar issue. I, who live north of the bridge, could get to the orcon data centre, but could not get to our queen street office. Other admin who lives south of the bridge could get to queen street office, but not to the datacentre. Unsure if this only effected Orcon or other providers as well. Be good to hear others experiences, or even an explanation if someone has one. Thanks, and kind regards.

InternetNZ and TVNZ7 are running an ICT Ministers Election Debate on Tuesday 23 September, for information see www.debate.net.nz There are remaining spaces available in the studio audience at Avalon. ________________________________________________________________________ IPv6 Penetration Survey: Seeking global input ________________________________________________________________________ The American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN), in cooperation with the Cooperative Association for Internet Data Analysis (CAIDA), is conducting a new survey to gather data regarding current and future use of IPv6. We have expanded the scope of the survey to seek IPv6 penetration data from around the world. We cordially invite and encourage all organizations in the AfriNIC, APNIC, ARIN, LACNIC, and RIPE NCC regions to participate in the survey so we can establish a comprehensive view of present IPv6 penetration and future plans for IPv6 deployment. The survey will open on 8 September and remain available until 17:00 EDT on 1 October. The results of the survey will be presented and discussed at the ARIN XXII Public Policy and Members Meeting to be held in Los Angeles, CA, 15-17 October 2008. Additionally, the summary results will be shared with all the RIRs for further distribution within their respective regions. The survey data will support ongoing research. IP assignment to end users

Hi all, If you have customers connected to you and you are doing IP address assignment with IPCP (ie. over PPP), or with DHCP, can you please let me know how your network does it? I'm especially interested in whether you have local address pools on access routers, or if you have centrally managed address pools and then inject IPv4 /32 routes in to your IGP, or a combination of the two (ie. dynamic customers on local pools, static customers on RADIUSed addresses). Also please let me know if you have a single LNS/NAS, or multiple, if they exist in multiple cities, etc. We had some interesting discussion the other day in the Auckland IPv6 workshop, and I wanted to get some background info to feed recommendations I'm putting in to a public 'How to do IPv6 to ADSL/ etc. subscribers' document I'm thinking of doing, with a focus on the NZ last mile environment. World Exchange unreachable

Looks like xnet.co.nz is unreachable via IP (which includes their phones). Is there anybody nearby who can knock on the door and offer beer to turn their stuff back on? IPv6 route servers at WIX

I'm in the process of automating the configuration of the IPv6 route servers at the WIX. Currently those who peer are only peering with one server, rs1-v6.wix.net.nz. I've added a second server, rs2-v6.wix.net.nz, and those who currently peer with the existing server have been added to the config of that. If you are an existing peer can you connect to the other server so that we can test our autobuilt config for it please. You can see a looking glass for that server at: http://nzix.net/cgi-bin/lg.cgi?protocol=IPv6&router=rs2-v6.wix.net.nz Once we've got this process refined we'll be happy to take more peers. (:-) We'll also roll out similar changes to the APE.

6to4 on the APE

As those of you who read the NZRR database notifications (or am I the only one?) will have noticed, we've updated filters with the intent to advertise the 6to4 prefix (192.88.99.0/24) on the APE shortly. This will put the closest 6to4 server for NZers on peering ISPs in Auckland, as opposed to Chicago (the current closest in all the tests I did, anyway). I'm sure many people will be interested in the level of traffic we receive, and the nature of that traffic, so I will be doing some analysis and will post details after it's been live a while. At this stage it looks like we will be announcing the prefix some time between now and Wednesday. Air New Zealand / ECN

Hi, I'm seeing TCP ECN issues on the final hop to www.airnewzealand.co.nz. If there's someone from Air NZ on this list, you might want to look into it. I can provide traceroute / testing information if required. As an aside, I thought the "some routers break packets with ECN enabled" bug went away ages ago. Is anyone else seeing ECN related brokenness, or is it now SOP to disable ECN and leave it off? Daniel
