The same goes for CLEAR Net. It can be done online at anytime through the DNS Self management system. ( https://register.clear.net.nz ) The only thing to note here, is that you must have a CLEAR Net account. CLEAR Net also does not charge for the secondary name server service. Please note that ns1.waikato.ac.nz will be decommissioned as the public secondary at the end of this month. The new public secondary is pubsec.domainz.net.nz. The charges for the new public secondary are the same as for the old one and will fall due on the same date. There is no charge for the transfer. If you are responsible for domain names using ns1.waikato.ac.nz can you either transfer them to the new public secondary or to another secondary of your own choosing. Before the weekend I will be mailing the name holders and technical contacts about the changes, so please bear in mind there will probably be an increase in help desk calls. The New Zealand Network Operators' Group The New Zealand Network Operators' Group (NZNOG) has no king, president or formal membership. At present it consists of the subscribers to this mailing list, which anyone is free to join. At last count the list had just over 170 subscribers, with the count growing by around five each month. The NZNOG mailing list is provided through a server at The University of Waikato, and is administered by an employee of Telecom NZ Ltd. Neither of these organisations (nor the administrator) is responsible for its content. NZNOG Mailing List Acceptable Use Policy The NZNOG mailing list exists to provide a forum for the exchange of technical information and the discussion of implementation issues that require cooperation among New Zealand network service providers. In order to continue to provide a useful forum for discussion of relevant technical issues, users of the list are asked to respect the following guidelines. 1. Discussion will focus on Internet operational and technical issues. 2. Discussion related to meetings of network service providers is appropriate. 3. Discussion unrelated to these topics is not appropriate. 4. Postings to multiple mailing lists are discouraged. 5. Postings that include foul language, character assassination, and lack of respect for other participants are unacceptable. 6. Blatant product or service marketing is unacceptable. 7. CityLink/WIX Outage

There will be a (hopefully) very brief outage on CityLink and WIX tonight somewhere between 5:30pm and 6:00pm while a backbone switch is upgraded. The outage will be while the switches pick up new MAC addresses and speeds are sorted out on some ports. This should be about 1 minute. Hi, I appologize for duplicates. Its almost time for the next quarterly walk of the inverse tree of the DNS. Since 1997, I've been walking the in-addr tree looking for numbers of delegations, accurate delegations, and types and styles of error conditions. So... this is a heads up that you will be seeing zone transfers being generated by a couple of the collecter machines here. For those of you who utilize BINDs access controls, I'd appreciate your inclusion of the collector machines in allowed transfers. The expectation is that they will be the following IP addresses: 128.9.160.57 and 198.32.4.13 If there are any questions or concerns, I'd be happy to talk about them. Past data has been presented at IEPG, Apricot and RIPE meetings. The expectation is that future data will be presented in the same and similar forums. DOMAINZ Review Terms of Reference

I have been asked by ISOCNZ Council to draft up terms of reference for the independent review of DOMAINZ's new DRS or Domain Registration System. As this list would comprise a large proportion of the major agents and users I am seeking feedback on the draft terms before I send them formally to Council next week. Feedback is welcome to the list or direct to me. DRAFT TERM OF REFERENCE OF INDEPENDENT REVIEW The review is to be comprehensive and focus not just on the technical issue of the implementation of the DRS but the entire project from conception to the present day. The reviewer should include sections on, but not feel limited to: - system design - system implementation - risk management - governance - documentation - communications - technical issues - and most importantly recommendations Specific aspects that should be covered (but not limited to) are - final cost vs budgeted cost and reasons for any variations - details of responsibilities between ISOCNZ, DOMAINZ Board, DOMAINZ staff and any contractors including who approved and who recommended key details - A full listing of reported user problems with the new system, the reasons for them, have they been remedied and whether they were foreseeable. The lack of notification of zone changes to especially be covered - Details of consultation and feedback over the entirety of the project and how, if at all, this was fed into the final system. - A clear summary of what the perceived benefits of the new system were to various stakeholders (ISOCNZ, ISPs, Agents and users) and what input the stakeholders had into the fundamental concepts behind the design - What documentation was prepared for users of the systems, including ISPs and Agents, and the adequacy of such documentation The reviewer should at a minimum consult with (including traveling to interview if necessary) the following people and groups - DOMAINZ Board, DOMAINZ staff, ISOCNZ Councillors and Technical Committee, Contractors working on the project, major NZ based ISPs and Agents. Submissions from any interested party (including domain name holders) should also be called for. The principles of natural justice should be adhered to and any allegations or opinions should be put to the other parties concerned for their comment. The reviewer's report will be made public. If there is any evidence which can not legally be made public this should be referred to in the public report, but not detailed. A fuller report, if necessary, which includes confidential information shall go to the DOMAINZ Board only. "Spam" unsolicited emails have become the vehicle of 21st century snake-oil salesmen, offering various schemes and services, to millions of recipients. Spam clogs up email in-boxes, slows down Internet traffic and overloads the systems of Internet service providers, hence the unpopularity of its perpetrators. "They can really cause havoc because systems get overloaded and it is impossible to get off a spam list, so people get annoyed as the junk can take hours to clear," said one Internet user, who did not want to be named because of concerns that he would be targeted by spammers. Being the telecommunications carrier that transports the spam, Telstra has landed in hot water among the Internet community. Over the past three months Telstra has been among the most unpopular Internet organisations on "anti-spam" information Web site Spamcop (web address http://spamcop.net) "Telstra serves a country of 20 million people and yet it has been the most complained about network for several months. So Telstra has not got a good reputation in the Internet world," the Internet user said. Anti-spam groups such as ORBS and MAPS have formed to fight these rogues of the Net, with a mission to drive them off the Internet. The most effective way to do that is to cut off links to the telecommunications operator that allows spammers to connect to their network. The anti-spam groups have achieved some measure of success. In March US Internet backbone carrier AGIS (Apex Global Internet Services) was forced into bankruptcy after it became an outcast in the Internet community over its refusal to rid its network of spammers. "The anti-spam organisations should not be underestimated," the Internet user said. Last week ORBS temporarily put a black ban on Telstra, which meant that the 200 plus Internet service providers that subscribe to ORBS from around the world would not receive email coming from the Telstra network. Given that Telstra is the largest carrier of Internet traffic in Australia that means a lot of emails sent last week were bounced back to their senders, including messages sent from The Sydney Morning Herald email system to New Zealand-based ORBS administrator Mr Alan Brown. Mr Brown said Telstra had been put on the ORBS black list because of its slowness to disconnect notorious spammers. Mr Brown said Telstra's treatment of two alleged spammers, Mr Phil Basten and Mr Dean Westbury, who are directors of company named Global Web Solutions, had triggered the ORBS action. Telstra spokesman Mr Stuart Gray acknowledged the two men were spammers and that Telstra had cut their connection to its Big Pond service. Despite Telstra claims that the pair were disconnected, Messrs Basten and Westbury were still operating late last week. "They are playing the game of multiple names, multiple identities, and they keep on popping up. But it is hard to know that they are going to be spammers when they first set up," Mr Gray said. The two men are also being watched by the Australian Securities and Investment Commission. "We are monitoring some of the activities of these gentlemen," an ASIC spokeswoman said. However, Mr Basten told the Herald that he was not a spammer and that he and Mr Westbury provided Web-hosting services and programs that allowed customers to bulk mail. He said that some of his customers appeared to be spammers. "We didn't know anything about it. It looks like there are four out of about 100 customers that have been spamming and we had no way of knowing. "The first thing I knew about it was when Telstra closed down our service and that has cost us a lot of money. So I am going to get our lawyers and try and get that money back from Telstra," Mr Basten said. A Telstra spokesman said that they had enough evidence to prove that Mr Basten and Mr Westbury were spammers. Australia's Internet carriers have not been as active as their US counterparts in stamping out spamming. In the US, where spamming activities first started, ISPs have become more active in cutting spammers from their network, issuing heavy fines and strict conditions that customers must adhere to. Both Telstra and Optus claim to have stringent anti-spam policies on their networks, prohibiting users from carrying out "unacceptable Internet behaviour such as spamming." However, Mr Brown said both carriers had been very slow to react to spamming. "Optus have not responded to any complaints that I have made to them. The Cable & Wireless group worldwide has a bad reputation in the Internet community where they are known as Clueless and Witless," Mr Brown said. With the Internet increasingly moving to wireless platforms, such as WAP on mobile phones, spamming is expected to spread even further unless carriers jump on it. I would rather under-utilise our WIX connection by using only explicit domestic peering with other large peers, whom I know how to contact, than use route reflectors, both of which are under a completely different routing domain, and can potentially have conflicting policies with mine. This is not, however, a personal attack on yourself, your administrative abilities, or your network, but merely a statement of fact. I cannot allow routes from unknown and untrusted sources to be injected into my AS unless stringent measures are undertaken on your part to ensure the sanity of said advertisements. Weird BGP community stuff

We have a router in Christchurch that seems to be sending community attributes to an EBGP peer, even though the neighbor statements dont contain the send-community argument. Does anyone know whats causing it? The router is running version 12.0(7)S1 on a 7500 series chasis. Also, on a somewhat related note, all domestic routes learned over WIX are being tagged with the community 9325:100, which is all cool. James, Your 611123300 wierdo is actually just another way of representing 9325:100. Not particularly odd to me, the 12.0T stream has various "new tchnologies" and "your milage may vary". Past VERY INTENSE relationships I have had with a number of 12.0T releases indicated that various hardware platforms behave very differently with each minor-release, and the activation of one feature or another also directly affects the behaviour. The 12.1 stream includes all the features of 12.0T, and is stabilising out well, you may want to look at trialling a release in there soon, if 12.04T gives you no luck. Have a Cisco 7206 (not the newer VXR model, the older one) and attempted last night to upgrade IOS on it from 11.2(3) to 12.0(7)T. Seemed to run okay (nothing on boot jumped out and said "broken") and pinged various bits of the network, with no problems. Left and went home :) Got to work this morning to discover "Internet broken". (Eventually) noticed that the 7206 had dropped two static routes, one of which was the default route. Hmmm.. Add them back, and a few minutes later they disappear again. Hmmmm.. Perhaps it's something odd comming from the BGP sessions with the WIX route server? Drop BGP, it still forgets the static routes after a few minutes. At this point we decided to back out of the IOS upgrade, and rebooted with 11.2(3), which has been running fine since. We do have a 3640 with the same feature set/revision, and it doesn't exhibit this problem. Suggestions? Give up on 12.0(7)T and pick a later release? Give up on the 12.0 tree altogether? The New Zealand Network Operators' Group The New Zealand Network Operators' Group (NZNOG) has no king, president or formal membership. At present it consists of the subscribers to this mailing list, which anyone is free to join. At last count the list had just over 160 subscribers, with the count growing by around five each month. (The addresses aitken(a)voyager.co.nz and stevebar(a)ihug.co.nz have been removed. The users of those addresses are welcome to re-subscribe with addresses which work.) The NZNOG mailing list is provided through a server at The University of Waikato, and is administered by an employee of Telecom NZ Ltd. Neither of these organisations (nor the administrator) is responsible for its content. NZNOG Mailing List Acceptable Use Policy The NZNOG mailing list exists to provide a forum for the exchange of technical information and the discussion of implementation issues that require cooperation among New Zealand network service providers. In order to continue to provide a useful forum for discussion of relevant technical issues, users of the list are asked to respect the following guidelines. 1. Discussion will focus on Internet operational and technical issues. 2. Discussion related to meetings of network service providers is appropriate. 3. Discussion unrelated to these topics is not appropriate. 4. Postings to multiple mailing lists are discouraged. 5. Postings that include foul language, character assassination, and lack of respect for other participants are unacceptable. 6. Blatant product or service marketing is unacceptable. 7. Postings of a political, philosophical or legal nature are discouraged. 8. Postings to the list should be in ASCII or MIME encoded as text/plain. Attachments should not be sent to the list. Just a heads up in case any other ISPs are seeing the same thing.. I've had to block inbound traffic from www-wlg.domainz.net.nz - the load average on our primary MX was at a nice healthy 97 thanks to an extremely large number of connections originating from this mail server. Thankfully, we were dropping it all on the floor because the sender domain doesn't exist (why not?): ruleset=check_mail, arg1=<4Service(a)wlg-iis.domainz.net.nz>, relay=www-wlg.domainz.net.nz [202.46.160.18], reject=501 5.1.8 <4Service(a)wlg-iis.domainz.net.nz>... Domain of sender address 4Service(a)wlg-iis.domainz.net.nz does not exist Domainz, please investigate and explain. I suspect whatever caused this will have left a large amount of mail queued on 202.46.160.18 waiting to be sent on. My name is Paul Montgomery, and I am the CEO of AusBONE, which is a peering organisation in Australia (don't worry, this is not a spam). I've been watching progress at APE, WIX and NZIX with interest, since we are doing similar things in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide. I'll be lurking on this list in future, but I thought I should say hello. One of AusBONE's main activities has been to link up interstate peering exchanges within Australia. The possibility exists to connect NZ with Australia in this network, but I'm not sure about how affordable this can be. Trans-Tasman tails are cost-prohibitive, as I'm sure I don't need to tell you. If any of you have thought about this and have come up with any workable ideas, I'd love to hear from you. Simon was too lazy to post this so I was delegated the task... Below is a copy of Simon's post to NANOG. I decided we need to post it here as there's a few lines starting with AS476x which might be of interest to certain NZNOGers. 8) Lin Simon's post to NANOG In the last couple of days I have gone though the Smurf Amplifier Registry at http://www.powertech.no/smurf/ and checked which ASNs are currently advertising the networks listed there. My listing by ASN is on my web page at: http://www.darkmere.gen.nz/2000/0712.txt Please check this list for your own (and your peers/downstreams/friends) ASN and fix. You should then goto the Powertech site and check from there, if there is no problem then the Smurf Amplifier Registry will delete you from their list. I have already emailed the top 10 ASNs but I don't have a nice easy way to email the other 1000 so I have decided here would be the best start. Depending on how things go I might check again in about a month. This is going to seem like a silly question, but does anyone out there have (or know someone who has) a spare NPM-4T or 2T serial module for Cisco 4xxx series routers? I require one (personally, not for IHUG, or I'd just go buy one) but there are bugger-all of them on Ebay and none in the collections of anyone I know personally. I will happily pay minor to moderate $$$s for one, or swap it for (looks in collection) a working Cisco IGS-R router/bridge, and/or various other bits of junk. G'day all, I have steadfastly resisted publicly replying to Alan's comments about me on IRC and NZNOG in the past, however I feel that this latest occurrence rates mention. I have attached below the email that prompted Alan's recent post to NZNOG. I am sure that most will agree that Alan was only doing the responsible thing in fore warning us that another carriers netblock was about to be nominated for RBL, and if this one occurrence is taken in isolation then you could say that I was over reacting. This is not the case. Despite my repeated assurances that I have absolutely no influence, involvement or control over the networks and customers of Telstra Corporation Ltd (AS1221) I have continued to receive spam abuse mail from Alan. Alan has also repeatedly associated both myself and Telstra Saturn NZ Ltd with his ongoing dispute with Telstra Corp. in the public forum. Where I have received mail from Alan about those networks that I do have some influence over I have always endeavored to action them. Hopefully this post will make others aware of my position on this matter. I will leave the last word to Alan and his supporters, as I am sure that they will have more to say! Regards, Phill. It's been widely confirmed that the new AUP has been simply created to shine MAPS on. Anyone buying bandwidth from Telstra/Saturn in NZ had better make sure that they're not in the main APNIC allocated Telstra /13, or they may find themselves caught up in the middle of it. The New Zealand Network Operators' Group The New Zealand Network Operators' Group (NZNOG) has no king, president or formal membership. At present it consists of the subscribers to this mailing list, which anyone is free to join. At last count the list had just over 150 subscribers, with the count growing by around five each month. The NZNOG mailing list is provided through a server at The University of Waikato, and is administered by an employee of Telecom NZ Ltd. Neither of these organisations (nor the administrator) is responsible for its content. NZNOG Mailing List Acceptable Use Policy The NZNOG mailing list exists to provide a forum for the exchange of technical information and the discussion of implementation issues that require cooperation among New Zealand network service providers. In order to continue to provide a useful forum for discussion of relevant technical issues, users of the list are asked to respect the following guidelines. 1. Discussion will focus on Internet operational and technical issues. 2. Discussion related to meetings of network service providers is appropriate. 3. Discussion unrelated to these topics is not appropriate. 4. Postings to multiple mailing lists are discouraged. 5. Looking for recommendations

Seeking some opinions here, and hoping to draw on the collected wisdom of NZNOG ;). We are looking at finding a different registry for GTLDs. Currently we are using Network Solutions (their motto: "Send us a detailed e-mail explaining the issue and how our FAQ doesn't cover it, and we'll refer you to the FAQ!"), but are looking for somewhere where the service is a little bit better (ie exists). Leading options so far seems to be OpenSRS or INA, but we are open to suggestions. At the moment we are not processing a huge volume of these, but we are expecting this to increase. Ideally we want a fair price, fairly prompt service, good support, and the ability to run an account (or some form of pre-purchase) Please let us know who you've found do a good job and feel you can recommend. Possible Telecom outage

G'day all, You may like to know that Telecom have advised that they have 3 x 140Meg bearers down on the South Island westcoast affecting many thousands of their customers in Nelson, Greymouth etc. We were advised that this outage started at about 10:42 today. We have not been given an ETR by Telecom. Telstra Saturn to pull out of NZIX

Telstra Saturn have been considering the future of their presence at NZIX for some time, and the decision has now been made to stop peering with other networks over that exchange. Telstra Saturn has broadband access to other large provider networks over the APE and WIX, and these newer exchanges are currently where the vast majority of peering traffic between Telstra Saturn and other networks is being carried. Private inter-provider circuits also carry peering traffic in Auckland and Wellington. The simplification of traffic management accommodated by this change should improve performance from Telstra Saturn to other networks. However, we are happy to manage the transition in conjunction with other operators to ensure that the change is made smoothly -- please contact me directly if your organisation has any specific requirements in this regard. Other than having identical configs, the two route servers are completely independant - they don't peer with each other as there seemed little point in taking routes from the old RS to the new RS when the whole point of this is to provide some security again failure in either RS. So give it time, I'd expect the number of prefixes to tend toward equivalence as more people peer with both. Ideally, I'd like to get everybody peering with both RS by the end of the month, as around about then Citylink is moving machine rooms, and with two route servers we can provide continuity of service even while one of them is in the back of my car :-). At the same time, one of the route servers will move to some other point on Citylink, to provide some geographical diversity. RBL process underway again on Telstra Australia.

Another heads-up. Telstra Aus mnanaged to stave off RBL entries for a period by claiming to be producing a new AUP. That AUP officially went live on May 27th, but Telstra are still unresponsive to complaints. As a result, I'm advised that RBL procedures are now rolling again - and as they have shown "shining on" practices, will be given little leeway in future. Anyone with netblocks allocated through AUNIC/Telstra Aus may well be adversely affected by this, even if they're in New Zealand. Be warned. AB -- How secure are hosts in _your_ network? The Domainz web interface only lets you specify four authoritative nameservers for a domain; the e-mail interface lets you specify six. The e-mail interface is only available to agentstrars. POB has confirmed that this is the intended design, and is not a bug. Can anybody confirm what happens if a domain has six nameservers loaded by an agentstrar using the e-mail template, and is subsequently edited by the nameholder using the web interface? Outcome of the ICAIS Consultation and the APEC TELMIN4 Conference (sorry, but its long)

Report to NZNOG and ISOCNZ-Members This is a report back to these lists on the position taken by New Zealand at the APEC TELMIN conference in Cancun and outcomes from the conference. But first: as previously noted, the feedback from members of these lists has been very helpful in informing a NZ Government view. However, as a member of the NZNOG list has pointed out to me, despite the suitability for this type of discussion over a beer, the matters are somewhat off-topic for NZNOG. The Ministry of Economic Development wishes to undertake further consultation leading up to an ITU-T meeting and the next APEC TEL meeting in September. I will continue to send consultation material to the isocnz-members list. Subscribers to the NZNOG list who wish to continue to be involved should email me direct. I will assume that anyone responding to the previous round will wish to continue to be involved (unless you tell me otherwise ;) There has been some publicity from Australia and the US about the outcome of this conference which may have created some confusion as they tend to express alternative views on the outcome achieved. I have appended below a copy of a media release from the Acting Minister of Communications which gives the NZ perspective on the outcome. It should be apparent that the matter is not going to just fade away and we believe that the NZ government will need to continue to be actively engaged in the debate. The stance adopted by NZ at Cancun was as follows: <quote> (i) in principle, the costs of international circuits should be shared in proportion to the benefits. We are, however, unsure of the best way of assessing those benefits, and of whether there is a more efficient way of developing cost-sharing arrangements than commercial negotiations between interested parties, ie whether the benefits of government interventions to mandate particular cost-sharing formulae would exceed transaction and other costs; (ii) recommendations on specific international charging arrangements for Internet services are premature; (iii) in any case, recommendations in this area are more properly a matter for the ITU, not APEC. As the World Telecommunications Standardisation Conference is in October 2000, this would give more time for the consideration of issues such as the implications of voice over Internet; (iv) APEC principles could be a useful means of helping to clarify thinking on the issue, particularly if they emphasise the role of the private sector. We see the draft recommendations in the report as a useful basis for consideration; (v) recommendations for further TEL work are appropriate; and (vi) New Zealand will be in a better position to have considered the issue more fully by the time of the ITU World Telecommunications Standardisation Conference in October. </quote> Note that the position reflects economic orthodoxy ("in principle, the costs of international circuits should be shared in proportion to the benefits") but recognises the difficulty of achieving this. This is a fair summary of the feedback received, which covered both points. The recognition of the ITU's role in the issue was based on further feedback from the industry and reflects work done by a NZ private sector representative in that forum as well as recognition that if any regulatory regime were to be formulated promulgation would have to be through the ITU as APEC does not have this function and, in any case, it is not just an issue for APEC economies. The output documents from the Cancun meeting are something of a compromise reflecting the difficulty in finding positions that the two 'sides' could agree to. It was agreed that 'equitable cost sharing' did not necessarily mean 50/50 and it was acknowledged that the benefits arising from Internet traffic are hard to determine. The outcome from Cancun was as follows: <quote> Ministers also adopt the International Charging Arrangements for Internet Services attached as Annex B. Ministers also reaffirm the importance of cost-sharing or other mutually-beneficial arrangements for the region as a whole. </quote> In the Annex B, the key paragraph reads as follows: <quote> Internet charging arrangements between providers of network services should be commercially negotiated and, among other issues, reflect: a) the contribution of each network to the communications; b) the use by each party of the interconnected network resources; and c) the end to end costs of international transport link capacity. </quote> A longer statement was contained in the Programme of Action agreed by Ministers for the Telecommunications Working Group for the next 2 year period. The NZ suggestion that the matter might be more appropriately one for the ITU was not picked up. The only specific outcome is a direction for the Telecommunications Working Group to report back to the next ministerial meeting in China in 2 years time. By that stage, the ITU (which is a treaty-making body) will also have considered recommendations on the topic and the Internet itself will no doubt have continued its rapid expansion. Ministerial Press Statement: <quote> The Acting Minister of Communications Trevor Mallard has welcomed the progress made by APEC Ministers on international internet charging arrangements. The APEC Ministers met in Cancun, Mexico last week. Trevor Mallard said a reasonable compromise has been reached between the strongly held views of the US and Canada on one side, and the other APEC economies led by Singapore and Australia. "At the heart of the issue is a claim of unfair international internet charging," he said. "Many APEC economies believe those international charging arrangements are unfair because in relation to traffic exchanged with the US, the non-US party has to meet the costs of the international link in both directions. "New Zealand's position at the meeting was that, as a general economic principle, the costs of international internet circuits should be shared in proportion to the benefits to the parties. "Having said that it is difficult to assess the benefits from internet traffic, and we need to be sure that gains from the benefits of any government interventions in commercial negotiations would exceed the costs." "The International Telecommunication Union (a UN body which has treaty-making powers) is considering recommendations on this matter at its World Telecommunication Standardisation Assembly in September. "The Cancun Declaration issued by APEC Ministers at the end of the Mexico meeting reaffirmed the importance of cost-sharing or other mutually beneficial arrangements for the APEC region as a whole. "The principles adopted by Ministers, and the future work programme approved for the APEC Telecommunications Working Group, emphasise the importance of commercial negotiation and cost sharing". "It is too early to tell how the Declaration will impact on commercial negotiations, as APEC is not a treaty-making body, but this is still a valuable step in the right direction," Trevor Mallard said. New Zealand will continue to participate in the APEC Telecommunications Working Group. On the 'liberal in what you accept' precept, I'd say that the server should either respond with the info, followed by somthing like % NOTE: Your whois client does not conform to the standard. % It failed to terminate the query string properly or even just provide the carp message and decline to provide the information, which is less helpful but more of an incentive to fix the broken client. In other words, if we want to throw rocks at the server, the most we can really complain about is that it failed silently when could have been a little more voluble. I'm no fan of 'liberal in what you accept'='I am a doormat, abuse me as you will, I will add code to work around your mistakes' for three reasons. 1. If the client writer doesn't know there is a problem, they can't fix it. 2. The server suffers code bloat. 3. When second-guessing what the client actually meant, it may well get it wrong (doesn't apply this time). However, if they are going to open the code to make the change you suggest though, the formating of the output could use some work. IMHO it's the ugliest whois server output I've ever seen, not to mention the most verbose. The New Zealand Network Operators' Group The New Zealand Network Operators' Group (NZNOG) has no king, president or formal membership. At present it consists of the subscribers to this mailing list, which anyone is free to join. At last count the list had just under 150 subscribers, with the count growing by around five each month. The NZNOG mailing list is provided through a server at The University of Waikato, and is administered by an employee of Telecom NZ Ltd. Neither of these organisations (nor the administrator) is responsible for its content. NZ whois server

As a NZ domain holder, I am unimpressed by the apparent inability of the Council of ISOCNZ to require Domainz to carry out the policies it is supposed to and I am also unimpressed by the failure of the Board of Domainz in ensuring that the policies of ISOCNZ are carried out. I and a number of others have requested the introduction of a whois server that allows access to the data on the ISOCNZ NZ Registry that is operated on the Society's behalf by their operating company Domainz. This is consistent with the requirement stated in the Council's policy on New Zealand's Domain Name Structure. In that document (http://www.mcs.vuw.ac.nz/~hine/ISOCNZ/DNS/DNpolicy-8-97.html#SecondLevel) the section "Use of Information Gathered" the first paragraph says: 'Information is gathered in order to provide a public name listing service in line with other Internet domain name registry services world-wide.' Other registry services world-wide implement a whois service as well as a web-based service as a matter of course. I understand that the Council of the Society has instructed Domainz to implement such a server. Can you give an indication of when this service will be available? I also note that a name for this service is listed in the DNS. It is confusing to have this name there and then not have a service running. This assumption will lead to suitable protective design, although the most serious problems in the Internet have been caused by unenvisaged mechanisms triggered by low-probability events; mere human malice would never have taken so devious a course! IHUG oddities

Folks, Terabyte in Auckland have a bunch of dialup accounts that they use to test sites in development. One of these accounts is with IHUG. The bizarre thing is that this dialup account isn't able to access any web pages at Terabyte from the PPP connection to IHUG. You can look up the name fine, and you can ping the remote server -- it's specifically HTTP traffic (tcp/80) that doesn't work. In the tests I've seen, the source address was 203.109.194.220 (presumably handed out by IHUG's DHCP), and the destination networks are Terabyte's hosting, at either 203.167.248.0/24 or 203.97.64.0/24. Can someone else test this via IHUG (and perhaps via someone else, in case there is some more obscure problem). http://www.terabyte.co.nz/ will do fine as an address to test. They've tested it already using a handful of other dialup ISPs around the countryside, and they work fine -- it's just IHUG that doesn't seem to work, and only for web traffic. I want to get some more tests done before I go pester IHUG with a vague complaint that may be nothing to do with them. Domainz full service registrars

We are trying to build a list of "domainz full service registrars". We have many customers who have setup domain name service on our system, but are having difficulty navigating the domainz site to register their name. When they contact domainz for assistance, they are told the reason they have a problem is because they are not using a full service registrar. XTRA, CLEAR Net, IHUG, WEBFARM and others have all been mentioned in communications. On several occasions our customers have contacted one of the above to have them register their domain name, but the "full service registrar" concerned refused to enter 2day.com domain name servers into the registry record. If you are a domainz registrar willing to enter name server records according to customer requirements, please email me. This permits meaningful dialog between the loopback domain and SPAM origination. In order to avail themsleves of this wonderful service, most ISP's in this country have implemented RFC 42064.32 which adheres to the Irish variation of ORBS. This means that all communication from the loopback domain is directed via sendmail to /dev/null. Unfortunately Microsoft clients have no way of implementing this device, and are therefore forced forever to endure SPAM which commences "Domainz is considering changes to.......". There is unfortunately no way to ever leave this highly desirable email domain. Hope this helps.... Bear in mind that this was the time of GOSIP, when Standards NZ wanted a large number of thousands of dollars, per year, to assign you an X.121 address. Countries coming to the Internet somewhat later have had the benefit of experience and have sometimes chosen different schemes. Another consideration was that in the VERY early days, we had big and little endian addresses (JANET style nz.ac.vuw vs Internet style vuw.ac.nz), and since NZ had Spearnet (Coloured book, JANET derived protocols) and TCP style addressing simultaneously for a while, PLUS the BITNET link between Auckland and VUW, plus uucp bang paths, plus Compuserve (remember them :-) we tried to make names unambigous under several transformations. That was one reason we explicitly chose 2LDs that were *not* gov, com or edu. 1. Email notifications ------------------- Ted is correct. The messages are going out to Registrars as notified last week and as Ted has discovered. However, they are not as yet going to name server managers who are _not_ Registrars, but this will be changed to include NS managers as from tomorrow morning. 2. Names on hold ------------- We will start tomorrow on releasing the backlog of names on hold. 3. Bugs/issues/change requests --------------------------- We are setting up a discussion list for these, which we plan to have live by this weekend - might cut down on traffic to the public lists :-) Will also have a tool for Registrars in particular to notify and track resolution of bugs. While my original intention was more historical to be of use in any inquiry (and showing the need for one) I am happy to modify it so it can be used to show what problems are still outstanding. Hence I will add on tonight a field called "Resolution" showing if the problem has been resolved, was one-off, is a philosphical as opposed to a technical problem or if it is still unresolved. These will be based on my knowledge which is based on mainly the public lists. I would be most happy once the "Resolution" field has been added on to have DOMAINZ inform me of further resolutions so I can keep it up to date. List of Registry Problems

I have compiled (and yes it did take me a long time) a list of known problems and bugs encountered with the new DOMAINZ registry system. It stands at 49 at present. Many of them have now been resolved but I believe it is important to note them as they occurred. The list is at http://www.dpf.ac.nz/isocnz/domainz.htm This is intended as a resource for those who believe that there should be an investigation into why so many problems were encountered, especially as many were avoidable. At this stage I have not ranked them in terms of seriousness. I welcome feedback as to additions and amendments as well as suggestions for the seriousness of each problem on a scale of 1 to 5, 1 being very major fuck up and 5 being a trivial problem of little consequence. Off the top of my head I would tend to put Nos 2, 5, 29, 35, 37, 41, 44 and 47 as all Class 1 problems. ORBS stupidity

It's come to my attention that ORBS is listing 203.97.237.122 as an open relay, and therefore is being blocked by various (clueless?) networks.., It happens to be a small mailserver I indirectly have some involvement with. It's not an open relay, it has never relayed spam, and its listing in ORBS defies belief. I have absolutely no interest in Alan's disputes with above.net, and I consider the continued listing of this server to be nothing more than petty vandalism on an innocent 3rd party by Alan. Such vandalism disgusts me, it is only pissing off the very people ORBS is trying to convince of its merit.. Alan, get a clue and stop listing people who _aren't_ open relays in ORBS. Domainz registrar email notifications

I thought domainz were going to fix sending soa emails to name server sysadms. Two weeks down the track and we still have delegations change left right and centre and not a single email notification from domainz. Does anybody know whats going on?
