More specificvally, it will help you: 1) Recognize programs used to facilitate DDoS attacks 2) Apply measures to prevent the attacks 3) Gather forensic information if you suspect an attack 4) Learn more about host security I have recently had the opportunity to try the "ip verify unicast reverse-path" command in a lab environment, it works with CEF on Cisco IOS 12.0. It seems relatively effective with about a 30% increase in distributed CPU utilisation (ie. 10% becomes 13%, not 40%). We had every packet flooding an interface with bogus source addresses, it happily discarded them all. And yes, it even forwarded the packets with valid source addresses ;-) It seems best suited to run at the edge of the network in from your downstream customers. There is no point running it on links in from upstream providers in most cases. We also lab tested Turbo Access-Lists, and found them very effective on long access-lists, the worst case the CPU increased loading on a VIP by about 40%, as opposed to a 200 entry non-Turbo Access-list which increased distributed CPU utilisation by as much as 95%. Large Scale Internet Attacks - Technical article.

Gentlefolk (are there any women on this list????) I thought this sufficiently interesting to post to the NOG, so that it may help anyone who is considering how to avoid these attacks in the future. I have removed all the sales guff (I hope). I hope this is of use. ==================================================================== At one account they were all Cisco. They were blown up by a massive amount of spoofed SYN flood attacks. The PIX did stop the SYN floods it did see, however most of traffic never reached the PIX because the egress router had a of overflow of traffic. I have personal experience with the account. We had recommended they put anti-spoofing filters and CAR filtering for ICMP on the egress routers. They told us they would not put any filters on the routers because they did not want to lose any performance. The attacks were designed to take advantage of a specific flaw in the network design of the target. This discovered by using an automated tool that tries literality hundreds of different exploits till it finds a successful avenue of attack. Since the hackers tools try over hundred types of exploits, it is possible that if the customer had implemented the egress filtering that we had recommend than the hackers would have been able to crash them with some other attack. However, a continual theme is that there are a large number of sites on the Internet, and the well defended sites tend to get ignored by this type of attack. Since these criminals don't tend to be very clever, in fact they seem downright lazy, they only go after sites that can be assaulted with off the shelf tools. In the case of one web portal, the attack was a BSD UNIX specific attack that rides on port 80 like any other HTTP traffic. It went thought the Cisco router and a Checkpoint firewall, just like it is supposed to do. Had the network administrator patched their Web servers with against this known type of attack, then the exploit would have done not worked at all. In one of the e commerce sites, they were blown up by a Smurf attack. However, the attack was against the upstream ISP, not the e commerce site itself. Just a little opinion of mine. "no ip directed-broadcast" only deals with the directed broadcast to the interface where the command is specified. It does nothing to the transit directed broadcast. To prevent from SMURF attack you have to code this command on each Cisco router interfaces in your network. Alternatively, a packet filter on boundary router blocking any IP packet destined to *.0 or *.255 would do the trink but you still need "no ip directed-broadcast" to deal with the directed broadcast originating from your internal network. Cache testing

Hi all, I'm doing a little bit of cache testing, and I'm looking for a nice, realistic-looking list of objects to fetch from the web; I'm going to use it as a test set to compare different boxes. Anybody care to share a log from a busy-hour cache that's used for residential internet access? All I'm after is a list of URLs to fetch (hits _and_ misses) so anonymised logs are fine. I wonder why Clear's level of service has diminished greatly over the last two months? Could we talk about Frame Relay? How about the nearly three months it took to upgrade the bandwidth? w95.fix2001 worm infection os doing the rounds...

I couldn't really think of a better place to send this... A couple of days ago we noticed some of our customers seem to have been infected by the w95.fix2001 worm. In brief, this is a small windows executable that infects '95 and '98 machines when run (yes, some people do run executables without checking...). It watches for outgoing email and send copies of itself to the addresses it sees there from <admin__(a)local.domain> with a message-id of <Fix2001(a)microsoft.com>; under some circumstances it will replace command.com with malicious code that will toast the hard-disk when next booted. Note, this is not a new worm, most anti-virus vendors should have been able to detect this since mid-September 1999, but obviously, not everyone runs AV software. For more details, please see: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w95.fix2001.html Now, as I mentioned, it has been doing the rounds -- grep you maillogs for (or the message ID) admin__ and you should see it if it has come you way, certainly before we put a `block' in (see below) I saw a number of incoming messages to our customers and several outgoing to people at other NZ ISPs. Warning: of only tangential operational significance http://www.patho.gen.nz/nz-registrars/ I am trying to coordinate some open discussion about an automated interface between registrar and registry, such as might be used by an ISP or web hosting company to manage new domain registration and domain deletion, and to manage modifications of the register. There are many different ways of doing this with gTLD and ccTLD registries at the moment, and no agreed standard approach. This project is an attempt to allow interested parties to build a specification for an interface that will meet their specific needs. This project is not endorsed by ISOCNZ or Domainz, although it is to be hoped that if we can reach good agreement within the industry about what our requirements are, ISOCNZ might listen. The NZ-REGISTRARS mailing list is a technical forum; the idea is to avoid politics and grandstanding as far as possible. The intent is to produce a comprehensive design, and stable, flexible running code, nothing more. A rapid summary of the potential features of the interface under discussion: + a strict XML representation for all transactions between registry and registrar + a choice of transport for exchanging transaction elements (e.g. e-mail, CORBA, DCOM, HTTP, whois) + batch and real-time transaction support + full version history/modification log for all records + strong authentication + compatability shims to allow transactions and query results to be accepted and presented in foreign formats, e.g. RIPE-181, NSI whois, NSI e-mail templates, Domainz whois, Domainz web-based query, Domainz e-mail channel template All are welcome. .nz registry lame delegations

Does anybody have any ideas on how to stop the .nz registry delegating names to ones name servers when they are not authoratative nor permission obtained for their use? This happens when they "reinstate" a domain after it has been suspended, usually for non payment of registration fees. I've tried asking them privately, but they dont seem to understand. I had to delurk for this... Standardisation of email addresses. One of the good reasons behind RFC2142 seems to have been lost here. With the standard mailboxes specified, it ensures that when I email those email addresses, I can expect the emails to land in the mailbox of the people who are in charge of that particular task. Patrick O'brien did a search of the database and came up with the "username" statistics. That is fine that they don't use the standard addressing as they are specifying their own. The idea behind the standardised mailboxes is that if all else fails emailing that particular username should work. For example if someone in that datbase was named as joe(a)domainname.co.nz had left and the domain name didn't update it. SHould I wish to contact the technical contact (who was joe(a)domainname.co.nz) and it bounced because joe had left, I can then send it to postmaster or one of the other admin addresses. I often have to contact administrators regarding abuse like spam, DOS attacks etc. As long as I know the domain name, I don't have to think about it. I should be sure that if I emailed abuse(a)domainame, the email will get to the person who handles it. Whether abuse is an actual mailbox or an alias that points to someone else's mailbox or a .forward in some account is immaterial to me. It becomes a problem is we have to contact a domain's administrative contact and the email to abuse@ (or postmaster@ or soa@ etc) bounces and we have no other means of finding out the email address since finger does not work, there is no whois available for that country (or gtld), or no website for that domain. Only avenue is to traceroute and contact their upstream provider hoping that they will be able to forward that. This is why if people do know about RFC2142 and do try to adhere to the compulsory bits of it, it would make life easier for everyone. Our experience was similar to Jamie's with outbound traffic more than three times the usual, we shifted a little traffic just in case but it dropped rapidly after midnight. Overall it was a quiter 24 hours inbound than usual. As for the timestamp on my mail ... it's my Linux machine I only ever use when I'm offsite, and you're lucky it doesn't say 1984 !!! DNS Spring Cleaning -- Final four full days

Happy New Year to you all, The DNS Spring Cleaning Project has now entered its final four full days. http://www.domainz.net.nz/newsstand/stories/SpringCleaning.html The program specially developed for analysis of the .nz domain space expires by January 7, so there is still time to take advantage right now. PROGRESS SO FAR ================ To-date, the results have been impressive. By last week, over 700 individual visitors had been to the site to download almost 550 copies of the special .nz program. Our surveys tell us that you've made changes to you DNS configurations that have fixed around 4,000 errors that the .nz program picked up. That is tremendous, so thanks. We've also seen significant reductions in the number of .nz domain names showing errors, moving from 28% of the .nz Register down to 25%. More detailed results of the last survey can be found at the Men and Mice site, http://sc.menandmice.com/statistic.html .nz TECHNICAL CONTACT DETAILS ============================ On a separate but connected note, we emailed all technical contacts listed in the .nz DNS 2 weeks ago with some startling results -- there was a bounce rate around 14% !!!! One purpose of the Technical contact is to be reachable so as to deal with any technical issues relating to the hosting of a domain -- this cannot happen where the email address is bouncing :() The key reasons that we could ascertain for this high rate were three fold:- 1. Using personal names -------------------------------------------- There are a considerable number of ISP's that use an individual person's name (eg fred(a).. or mary(a)...) rather than a functional name (eg dns(a)... or soa(a)...), and most bounced mail came from the former category. ISP's should consider the use of functional names for their technical contact rather than individual names, as the former have much more "permanence". 2. Name Holder listed as technical contact ------------------------------------------------------------------ There are a few ISP's that put the Name Holder's name as the technical contact and this does not appear to be updated as the Name Holder's details change. Moreover, most Name Holders who fell into this category and responded to our email knew precious little about the technical details of hosting their domain name. The technical contact should be someone who understands the technical issues of a domain name. Typically we would expect to see the organisation with the technical wherewithal to host the domain name shown in this field. ISP's should check to ensure that they list the appropriate technical contact person. 3. Not keeping details current ------------------------------------------------ The final category reflected organisations that had not kept current the domain name information. In many cases, it followed the move of a domain name from one ISP to another. Generally the IP details had been updated to make the domain work, but no other details (Name Holder, Billing, Technical contact) had changed. ISP's need to ensure that they do keep all domain details up-to-date, particularly when a domain name is moved from another ISP. Out of curiosity... Does anyone know if any real problems aside form heavy PSTN congestion? Presumably these issues would be also paranoia induced such as perhaps power-spikes cause by everyone testing the lights at 00:01... (perhaps there is an equivalent here with water supply?) At present it consists of the subscribers to this mailing list, which anyone is free to join. Routing problems at clix

Hiya Anyone know who I should ask about routing problems somewhere at CLIX, or maybe Netgate.net.nz? I haven't been able to connect from here to parnassus.pmail.gen.nz (192.156.225.2) for about a week, but I can get to it from the States (risc.ua.edu) They connect to CLIX via Pacific Networks (pacific.co.nz). All my traceroutes from parnassus.pmail.gen.nz to here die somewhere inside CLIX (203.167.244.161). Traceroutes from here go via Netlink to Telstra (Auckland, Sydney), NetGate, then die inside a netblock that InterNIC believe belongs to the Wellington School of Medicine. If anyone would like to see the outputs, just give me a yell. I'll be watching tonight :-) FWIW, pmail.gen.nz changed their upstream about a week ago. Jamie, To me the notion that ORBS is "attacking" is obviously specious.. so one goes on to wonder why Dean Anderson's message carries any appearance of credibility.. Hopefully whatever merit you see in Dean Anderson's message is soon run to ground by a little net research. That research will show that Dean Anderson is well known for "imaginative and persistent postings" and got himself kicked out of spam-l and spamtools, etc.. and that he features in a list of Net Kooks. hi All, We have with some enthusiasm looked forward to the practical action re peering, and are really pleased that Clear and IHUG and very soon Telecom are going to be peering with us. No doubt this means that those of you on the above list are peering with each other too as well as other smaller parties. Today Telstra appear to have distinguished themselves. Our initiative to BGP peer with them was rejected in accordance with a policy of "not peering with anyone but a carrier". (- David Venables) This seems antithetical to the overall objective of an "exchange" ? In the interests of network efficiency do you think that Homo Australias could at least be persuaded to exchange with the route reflector?? Since 1997, I've been walking the in-addr tree every quarter, looking for numbers of delegations, accurate delegations, and types and styles of error conditions. So... this is a heads up that you will be seeing zone transfers being generated by a couple of the collecter machines here. For those of you who utilize BINDs access controls, I'd appreciate your inclusion of the collector machines in allowed transfers. Queries will be from the following IP addresses: 128.9.160.57 and 198.32.4.13 If there are any questions or concerns, I'd be happy to talk about them. Has anybody managed to get an in-addr.arpa delegation from 96.203.in-addr.arpa or 97.203.in-addr.arpa processed recently? I've been trying to get a couple through for the past month, but no luck so far. It seems possible that Rex Croft's departure from UoW has caused the procedure for these delegations to change somewhat (at least, whatever APNIC normally do doesn't seem to have worked). NZIX and DOMAINZ outage - Sunday 12-Dec1999 4:30am

>From 4:45am to about 5:00am Sunday morning the 12-Dec-1999 there will be a power outage in Waikato University's main computer room. This will cause an outage for the NZIX and for all of the DOMAINZ services during this time. This is due to a serious fault found in the UPS this morning. Unfortunately the fault is in the bypass switch so we are unable to bypass the UPS to keep the Computer room running while we work on the UPS. Sorry about the short notice, but the nature of the fault means we may lose power to the Computer Room at any time until the fault is fixed. We will try to keep the down time to a minimum. The New Zealand Network Operators' Group The New Zealand Network Operators' Group (NZNOG) has neither a king, a president nor a formal membership. At present it consists of the subscribers to this mailing list, which anyone is free to join. (At last count the list had a little over 110 subscribers, with the count growing slightly each month.) The NZNOG mailing list is provided through a server at The University of Waikato, and is administered by an employee of Telecom NZ Ltd. Neither of these organisations (nor the administrator) is responsible for its content. NZNOG Mailing List Acceptable Use Policy The NZNOG mailing list exists to provide a forum for the exchange of technical information and the discussion of implementation issues that require cooperation among New Zealand network service providers. A plea for some clue

If you work for an ISP that employs people without clue to answer the telephone and accept orders, please spread the word that .com domain names do not have authorisation keys. We are getting dozens of calls a day from people asking for keys when they simply do not exist. As an ISP, our preference is that providers taking delegation send the template to NSI or enable their customer to do it for themselves. Sending the customer back to us to change the delegation is not usually helpful. Having said that, as an NSI premier partner, if there are any providers with specific instances of problems with .com names, change of delegation or billing, please fee free to contact us. We have 24/7 access to a real person at NSI to fix problems. FYI: a channelized E1 problem(Answer)

FYI, in case someone could come across this problem again. The answer is the pinout of NTU and router cable. We made a RJ-45 cable that cross-wires pin 1&2 to 4&5, and vice versa. It worked straightaway. The pinouts on Cisco router and Telecom NTU are all fixed. You would think they are pretty much standard but apparently not. Domainz has announced whois access to the .nz registry at whois.domainz.net.nz http://www.domainz.net.nz/reference/whois.htm Unfortunately it says:- a) Its a trial b) DOMAINZ cannot guarantee accuracy of data I'll ignore the terms of use for the time being. It appears as its a trial, it may be removed without notice. The query results may not be accurate, and there is no way of telling when they are or not The silly thing is that DOMAINZ say the definitive source is the web site CGI which probably is reading the same dataset. We are not interested in a trial that may return bad data. We want a real whois. It is worth considering this story, in the light of the communications regimen NZ currently finds itself in. I have (almost - lets not get too excited) enjoyed the rational, and carefully worded proposals from David Farrar, Rick Shera and Jim Higgins on how the Internet Society might evolve. I would personally love to perhaps redirect some of the effort being poured into administrative minutiae, to try to get some politicians to understand the implications of the knowledge economy, and how the easy access to the knowledge economy is incredibly important to areas of the country that find themselves significantly disadvantaged (eg the decline of the rural economy). David - persuade one politician a day...... This country needs to build a very high speed, low cost communications network with Universal access in the same way that it needed to build railways in the last century, and roads and airports in this. Hi, We are having a mysterious problem with a channelized E1. I am wondering if you have any clue. Any input would be very much appreciated. We have been trying to commission a new 512K leased circuit but not successful. At the central end the NTU(CSU/DSU) is connected to a Synchronous serial port on AS5200 via X21. At the branch end the NTU is connected to a Balanced Channelized E1 port on 3620 via G.703 RJ-45. We have done loopback test and located the source of problem. It's between the 3620 and NTU at branch. We brought back the 120-Ohm RJ-45 cable and checked the cable OK. And Telecom has double-checked the circuit as well. It seems that the router is not talking to NTU at all. I'd be interested in a statistic that measured how much bandwidth the = average person in a country had access to for the average wage. MAN! Comments on recent posts from Roger De Salis and Josh Bailey While I have no real personal disagreement with the sentiment Roger's post expresses, I do have some concerns about the way that the government might be involved in such a venture; I would personally prefer to see government get its own information policies in order (ie, developing a comprehensive vision for e-government in NZ) rather than plunging straight into building an infrastructure that might be done better by others. I do have some problems with what Josh Bailey has to say. Who is paying for the Cisco in the pizza parlour? I doubt if it is a government initiative; be it Californian or Federal. There has been some interesting stuff put out by Paul Budde recently (see the most recent 'Friday Fryup' from Russell Brown) about the impact (or lack) of NZ's telecommunications competition policy and has some bearing on the comment about the cost of 64K circuits in NZ. (Albeit, these comments are not really accepted in the place that I work.) Note that 64K circuits have never cost US$30K/m in NZ ... China had, and still has, some way to do to catch up, frankly. In commenting on the 'aisle' of Ciscos observed in Korea: it is perhaps possible that Telecom NZ has such as facility, I do not know. I am not aware of a serious lack of overseas data capacity for New Zealand at present (I would be very interested to know if there is in fact such a lack of capacity). The future seems reasonably secure with the prospect of the Southern Cross cable opening next year (increasing present overseas data carrying capacity by a factor of 100, I believe). There are serious bandwidth users in NZ. While I do not personally wish to carry any particular flame for Telecom NZ, I do know that Peter Jackson has had very good co-operation in having his on and off shore needs for very large bandwidth met by them (no doubt at a cost!). I personally believe there are concerns about local loop issues in NZ that need addressing but I have no concerns about national or international infrastructure where there is abundant competitive pressure and opportunity. The Internet in NZ has (& is) expanded (ing) very quickly. NZ has one of the top 10 Internet penetrations in the world (ahead of Australia, all of middle and southern Europe and miles ahead of Korea and the rest of Asia). There are issues about e-commerce development in NZ, certainly, if the Ernst Young report from early this year is to be believed. I am also very concerned about the apparent denigration of the need to develop and focus on post industrial economic models for NZ (ie the knowledge economy) by both politicians and media commentators in the current election campaign. But, Josh, if you really have a concern it has to be better directed and expressed than the comments you make in your post. We have been advised by the Reserve Bank that the Governor, Don Brash will make a major announcement on Wednesday 17 Nov at 0900. They will be offering this via a streaming server at RBNZ and are concerned about the impact of possible traffic increases on the Internet. Their Corporate Affairs people have estimated that something between 200 and 800 clients MAY view it. Each client will be approx 28kbps stream. Routers on CityLink/WIX may struggle under the load. CityLink will install a temporary 100mbps link for the occassion, along with a WIX router, so that traffic gets passed directly to as many clients as possible. Is any WIX ISP interested in offering international traffic (and IP numbers to go behind the router) for the occassion ? 0867 Access to Internet

Dear Mr Williamson: This week I have been in America at an Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) meeting. IETF meetings bring together around 2000 technical people who are working together to develop and improve the global Internet. Among them are people from most of the world's telecommunications companies, which gives me a very good chance to talk to them and find out how telephone services work in other countries. I have taken the opportunity to canvas opinion on Telecom New Zealand's 0867 service for Internet access from the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). Everyone has responded with open-mouthed astonishment to the idea that a single company could actually do this, and remark that "it wouldn't be legal in any other country." The effect of this service is to force ISP's to use Telecom to provide PSTN connection services for them, or to use another provider with whom Telecom has an '0867 agreement.' I fail to understand why you, as Minister of Communications, are prepared to allow any one company to exercise such a high degree of control over public access to the Internet in New Zealand. Would you please let me know how you intend to correct this anomoly if you continue to be New Zealand's Minister of Telecommunications? Joe's point about Merit is where this get's interesting to me. Obviously, WIX and APE should move to a Arbitrated network in my opinion, if you are providing the route server, then you provide the only rational filtering point. On the issue of running the database though, this data may well reach beyond the realm of WIX and APE and their customers, for instance NetGate could use it to Clear directly etc. Wouldn't it be nice if we could trust that ISOCNZ and DomaiNZ could provide a useful cost-effective and more regionally acurate alternative to Merit !!! Hmmm (evil ideas spring to mind) It may seem a bit odd, but this has been one of my pet *aims* for WIX! Contrary to popular belief, Citylink doesn't have infinite network capacity :-). Therefore, providing a mechanism where customers of ISP's can transit data directly to other customers of ISP's, without having that data split horizon through one or two ISP routers is increasingly desirable. That's why we have a setup where a little Citylink customer with a /28 from their ISP and no ASN can still peer with the route server and exchange data directly with other Citylink users. > It would not be sufficient for us to deny these advertisements either - as > they may very well be legitimate (multihoming). Telstra NZ live on the APE

Hi all, A few minutes ago Telstra NZ exchanged its first routes with CLEAR and Plain Communications over the APE. The peering relationships are currently in test, and we expect a stable policy to be in place on the routers early next week. Many thanks to Phil Groom for doing most of the work, Chris Wedgwood and Matthew Grant for being available to peer at the drop of a hat, and Ben Martel for being generally a handy man to know. For future reference, Telstra NZ's Sky Tower router is numbered 192.203.154.32 on the exchange subnet, and has a clean 100M back to the data centre in Queen Street over dark fibre, backed up with DMR. Telstra are announcing routes from AS4763. Full route policy will be published shortly, probably in the RADB. The New Zealand Network Operators' Group The New Zealand Network Operators' Group (NZNOG) has neither a king, a president nor a formal membership. At present it consists of the subscribers to this mailing list, which anyone is free to join. (At last count the list had a little over one 110 subscribers, with the count growing slightly each month.) The NZNOG mailing list is provided through a server at The University of Waikato, and is administered by an employee of Telecom NZ Ltd. Neither of these organisations (nor the administrator) is responsible for its content. Connections to APE (plus changes)

In the next week or so the 2 switches at APE will be replaced with a more capable Cisco switch, through the generosity of Cisco NZ. While this is taking place there will be a smal outage on the APE switch. Users will notice an outage of less than 1 minute while the new switch learns mac addresses etc. At the same time, cablers will be on site and available to connect up any parties interested in joining the exchange. Prospective users whose external connectivity has yet to arrive, can still be connected while the cabling is taking place - its easier for the installers to pull a bundle at one time. Hi all I figured that you may all want to know that rata.vuw.ac.nz, one of the secondary nameservers for the nz ccTLD, will be out of service for an undetermined period of time tomorrow evening (Saturday 23 October 1999). As part of our Y2K preparations, management here has decided that all of our core systems should be shut down, powered off, left to cool, and then restarted, to see what breaks. This will all happen tomorrow night. The shutdown and startup procedures will be carried out by unqualified staff (i.e. not even Unix-literate) as an experiment in system documentation standards. I hope to see you all on the other side. Joe, Not to steal his thunder, but John V. has indicated to the Council that he had received some good feedback from the lists and email which is going to require a redraft of both policies to include some of the suggestions and rewordings. He also said that the Technical Committee is meeting later this week to consider these changes and he hopes to have something final after that. John, Some feedback for you. Background A primary name server is a name server that gets the data for its zones from local files. Changes to a zone, such as adding domains or hosts, are done at the Primary Name Server. A secondary name server gets the data for its zones from another name server across the network which is authoritative for that zone. The processes of obtaining this zone information (that is the database file) across the network is referred to as a zone transfer. Since bind 8 I believe the nomenclature that has been widely adopted is a "master" nameserver (corresponding to a master zone configured on that host) and multiple "slave" nameservers which keep their copies of the zone up-to-date using zone transfers. Probably makes sense to make use of the current terminology. Zone Transfers will be allowed provided: [...] I think that there are numerous reasons to perform a zone transfer which are not covered here, which would be consistent with the privacy act provision in point 2. It seems to me that the list is unnecessarily restrictive in presuming to know all the reasons an operator might have for performing a zone transfer. I also think that there is nothing wrong with statistics gathering. Understanding trends makes the network a safer place. I do not understand your earlier point that data for statistical analysis would be available on the web, but not by zone transfer... Perhaps I misunderstood it. I would rephrase point (3) to be something like: that it is not for the purpose of allowing, enabling or otherwise supporting the transmission of mass unsolicitited, commercial advertising or solicitatious e-mail. I would also make point (4) a little more general, and allow zone transfers to facilitate "operational network engineering". Is it reasonable for a request not to contain a detailed description of the reason for wanting to perform a zone transfer? What is a reasonable request? Is the idea of this policy to be prepared in the event that a flagrant misuse of the zone data occurs? If so, I think it's a good idea. John, More feedback, different draft. An WHOIS server is the Internet Standard way of access details from, in our case, the .nz database. "a" whois server, surely :) * It is a separate service. Separate from what? * It is currently provided by all major Name Service organisations, e.g. Ripe and APNIC etc. RIPE and APNIC aren't actually name service organisations; they're regional registries for ASN and IP number allocations. You might use CRSNIC, NSI, Nominet, etc if you're looking for examples of registries' and registrars' use of whois. WHOIS Policy * That NZIRL be required to put in place a standard WHOIS server on the .nz database. What needs to be carefully specified is the formatting of queries and responses to the whois service. There are a number of different "standard" query definitions and response formats currently in use amongst different registries. It would make sense for Domainz/ISOCNZ to approach the heavier users of their existing services and consult as to the query and response formats that are required. The Data in ISOCNZ WHOIS database is provided by NZIRL for information purposes, and to assist persons in obtaining information about or related to a domain name registration record. NZIRL does not guarantee its accuracy. NIRL should guarantee that the response returned to a query is consistent with the data stored by Domainz at the time of the query. (2) enable high volume, automated, electronic processes that apply to NZIRL (or its systems). I'm not sure what this means. What does it mean? ISOCNZ reserves the right to modify these terms at any time. I would imagine that you should qualify this by specifying how changes to the policy will be notified to users of the whois service. You might also refer to RFC812, which specifies nicname/whois. It's a little old (it refers to NCP/TCP!) but the core protocol is described there, such as it is.
