Dear Colleague, This is to notify you that one or more objects in which you are designated for notification have been modified in the NZRR routing registry database. These objects are used to configure the various NZIX route servers (http://nzix.net/) so you can expect the relevant servers to be reloaded in the near future. The reloading of the servers is staggered over a period of time so that if you are peering with both servers at an exchange, you can maintain at least one BGP session at all times and consequently a full set of routes. It is currently available to participants in their Google over IPv6 program, http://www.google.com/intl/en/ipv6/ . The www.youtube.com user interface so far does *not* have any AAAA published, but the *much* more important (traffic wise) image and video servers do. Use tcpdump to verify. To figure out all the mappings they give you, if you want to trace etc, something similar to: "for i in `seq 1 24 `; do for y in `seq 1 8 `; do host v$i.lscache$y.c.youtube.com ; done ; done | grep 'IPv6 address' | cut -d' ' -f 1,5 | sort -uk2" could be used - at least from where I sit. Adjust for correctness. I'm sure that as this matures and bugs are wiped out, there will no longer be any need for the Google over IPv6 program and everybody will be able to access this. The government is looking for partners to invest and participate in up to 33 local fibre companies. Although the submissions are confidential, many potential participants have gone public with at least some information. Telecom NZ submitted two proposals, one compliant and one non-compliant, as well as expressing an interest in coming to an accommodation with the government even if these plans are rejected. The company said a national approach is required to deliver "a consistently engineered and interconnected network". It also talked in terms of not duplicating what has already been built. In a media statement CEO Paul Reynolds said; "In addition to the two proposals Telecom is submitting, Telecom is open to discussing other alternative proposals which achieve the government's objective, avoid unnecessary waste and align the incentives and investment plans of both the government and Telecom". The published terms of the project expressly forbid a telco from participating if it has both retail and wholesale operations - effectively ruling out Telecom NZ while it retains control of its Chorus access network division. This has triggered speculation the company is considering divesting itself of the business - even though there have been repeated assurances this is not in prospect. One of the two proposals involves building on the company's existing fibre-to-the-node as a springboard for fibre-to-the-home. Telecom's two bids are a function of the submission process where bidders offering a non-compliant bid must also submit a compliant bid and explain why non-compliance is preferable. In its bid, Auckland-based lines company Vector has gone for speed promising to deliver ultra-fast broadband to the premises across the city in seven years - beating the government's target by three years. The submission says its compliant bid means fibre will pass 133,000 premises within two years and connect more than half of all businesses within four years. Like Telecom NZ, Vector's public statements make much of its ability to "leverage existing assets". Vector is a member of The New Zealand Regional Fibre Group (NZRFG) which says a number of other members have submitted proposals. The NZRFG said it is "Developing a proposal which could provide a dramatic step-change through the creation of an open access, national layer 2 (or lit) fibre network". NZRFG members have submitted consortium bids for the Waikato and the Otago and Southland regions. Northpower submitted a bid for the Northland region. David Ware of TeamTalk confirmed to CommsDay his company's bid for the Wellington region. I hand-waved the question about DNSSEC and DNS64 in my talk just now. The full answer is in http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-behave-dns64 Extracting the main bits: (section 5.5) 1. If CD is not set and DO is not set, vDNS64 SHOULD perform validation and do synthesis as needed. 2. If CD is not set and DO is set, then vDNS64 SHOULD perform validation. Whenever vDNS64 performs validation, it MUST validate the negative answer for AAAA queries before proceeding to query for A records for the same name, in order to be sure that there is not a legitimate AAAA record on the Internet. Failing to observe this step would allow an attacker to use DNS64 as a mechanism to circumvent DNSSEC. If the negative response validates, and the response to the A query validates, then the vDNS64 MAY perform synthesis and SHOULD set the AD bit in the answer to the client. 3. If the CD bit is set and DO is set, then vDNS64 MAY perform validation, but MUST NOT perform synthesis. It MUST hand the data back to the query initiator, just like a regular recursive resolver, and depend on the client to do the validation and the synthesis itself. The disadvantage to this approach is that an end point that is translation-oblivious but security-aware and validating will not be able to use the DNS64 functionality. In this case, the end point will not have the desired benefit of NAT64. In effect, this strategy means that any end point that wishes to do validation in a NAT64 context must be upgraded to be translation- aware as well. ... (section 6.2) Existing DNSSEC validators (i.e. that are unaware of DNS64) will reject all the data that comes from the DNS64 as having been tampered with. If it is necessary to have validation behind the DNS64, then the validator must know how to perform the DNS64 function itself. Alternatively, the validating host may establish a trusted connection with the DNS64, and allow the DNS64 to do all validation on its behalf. -- Regards Brian Carpenter

Curry on Wed: Normally I'd offer to organise a curry dinner on Wed evening. Unfortunately can't do it as we'll be going to a family birthday dinner tomorrow evening (in Hamilton). The venue for last nznog curry in Hamilton (New Delhi, 15 Hood St) is no longer there. From what I could find, there's another New Delhi in Dinsdale, Hamilton. Unless the locals have better suggestions for Wed night curry (if there's to be a curry dinner on Wed), Little India or Jaipur Walla seems to be the two "safe" options. Hi Folks, We're experiencing another fun and exciting power outage in Auckland. Thus far I can confirm we have end users without power (and presumably without UPS protection) in the following neighborhoods: Albany CBD Eden Terrace Ellerslie Mt Eden Ponsonby St. Mary's Bay We're on generator and battery at a number of POPs. HI folks I am trying to spot compromised (or just 'shared') accounts by looking at where logins are coming from. I am doing this by using the free city data base from www.maxmind.com. If this works out we will probably pay for the full product. Anyway, my question for the list is "Just how reliable are these services for IPs within NZ?" Hi all A few conference bits and bobs. The NZNOG 2010 conference runs from Wed 27 to Fri 29 Jan, 2010 in the friendly city of Hamiltr0n. Registrations are open so please register ASAP. This year we're doing something slightly different - our 3 day routing workshop from Monday to Wednesday. Until today we didn't have Monday night accomodation available - that is now fixed and available on the conference registration system. http://2010.nznog.org/register Accomodation on campus, especially Monday night, is limited in terms of numbers. _______________________________________________________________________ Less than 10% of IPv4 Addresses Remain Unallocated, says Number Resource Organization _______________________________________________________________________ Hi NZNOG Community, Deploying IPv6 - the next generation of the Internet Protocol - is vital to the continued development of the Internet AMSTERDAM - The Number Resource Organization (NRO), the official representative of the five Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) that oversee the allocation of all Internet number resources, announced today that less than 10 percent of available IPv4 addresses remain unallocated. This small pool of existing IP addresses marks a critical moment in IPv4 address exhaustion, ultimately impacting the future network operations of all businesses and organizations around the globe. "This is a key milestone in the growth and development of the global Internet," noted Axel Pawlik, Chairman of the NRO. "With less than 10 percent of the entire IPv4 address range still available for allocation to RIRs, it is vital that the Internet community take considered and determined action to ensure the global adoption of IPv6. The limited IPv4 addresses will not allow us enough resources to achieve the ambitions we all hold for global Internet access. The deployment of IPv6 is a key infrastructure development that will enable the network to support the billions of people and devices that will connect in the coming years," added Pawlik. Internet Protocol is a set of technical rules that defines how devices communicate over a network. There are currently two versions of IP, IPv4 and IPv6. IPv6 includes a modern numbering system that provides a much larger address pool than IPv4. With so few IPv4 addresses remaining, the NRO is urging all Internet stakeholders to take immediate action by planning for the necessary investments required to deploy IPv6. The NRO, alongside each individual RIR, has actively promoted IPv6 deployment for several years through grassroots outreach, speaking engagements, conferences and media outreach. To date, their combined efforts have yielded positive results in the call to action for the adoption of IPv6. Given the less than 10 percent milestone, the NRO is continuing its call for Internet stakeholders, including governments, vendors, enterprises, telecoms operators, and end users, to fulfill their roles in IPv6 adoption, specifically encouraging the following actions: The business sector should provide IPv6-capable services and platforms, including web hosting and equipment, ensuring accessibility for IPv6 users. Software and hardware vendors should implement IPv6 support in their products to guarantee they are available at production standard when needed. Governments should lead the way by making their own content and services available over IPv6 and encouraging IPv6 deployment efforts in their countries. IPv6 requirements in government procurement policies are critical at this time. Civil society, including organizations and end users, should request that all services they receive from their ISPs and vendors are IPv6-ready, to build demand and ensure competitive availability of IPv6 services in coming years. The NRO's campaign to promote the next generation of Internet Protocol continues to positively impact the Internet community. IPv6 allocations increased by nearly 30% in 2009, as community members continued to recognize the benefits of IPv6. "Many decision makers don't realize how many devices require IP addresses - mobile phones, laptops, servers, routers, the list goes on," said Raul Echeberria, Secretary of the NRO. "The number of available IPv4 addresses is shrinking rapidly, and if the global Internet community fails to recognize this, it will face grave consequences in the very near future. As such, the NRO is working to educate everyone, from network operators to top executives and government representatives, about the importance of IPv6 adoption," added Echeberria. IP addresses are allocated by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), a contract operated by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). IANA distributes IP addresses to RIRs, who in turn issue them to users in their respective regions. "This is the time for the Internet community to act," said Rod Beckstrom, ICANN's President and Chief Executive Officer.
