NZNOG Conference 2002: Further Feedback

NZNOG People, OK, I asked for further feedback and now I've got some. Quite a lot actually. With a certain amount of interpretation on my part (e.g. all cases of "I'll bring along some other people" interpreted as "I'll bring along one other person"), I believe that we have something like this: Potential attendees volunteering: 21 Potential attendees volunteered by others: 7 Offers to provide or be speaker(s): 7 Offer to help organise speakers: 1 Offers to help organise: 5 Offers of venue: 4 Offer of sponsorship (i.e. money): 1 Offer of exhibition network equipment: 1 There have been relatively few statements of preference as to location: Auckland: 3 Wellington: 3 With UniForum NZ: 2 Hawke's Bay: 1 Outside Auckland and Wellington: 1 Interpreting the comments of two University of Waikato staff as votes for Hamilton would not clarify that picture any. I'm impressed. All of that in three days. We do appear to have enough interest to justify proceeding to planning a specific event. In doing that we face a number of inter-related decisions. 1/ Do we wish to restrict this to one day, or are we looking for a residential conference? I think this is the most important of the decisions. It has implications for cost, obviously, but also for where we do this and what sort of organisational structure is needed. A residential conference should probably be outside (though within reach of) Auckland or Wellington to keep costs down and to reduce the temptation to go back to work. Conversely, that can be expected to make it harder for some people to attend. I'm assuming that we do want a national event rather than local meetings over drinks, but if that's not the case, now's the time to say so. I'm also assuming that multicasting is an add-on to a physical event, not a substitute for one. 2/ Are we happy to have a vendor provide a venue? There has been at least one quite feasible, as well as generous, offer from a vendor. Whether this is even an issue depends on the answer to the previous question. 3/ How often are we planning to do this? Should we be thinking big on the basis that this is a once-a-year thing, or are we trying to keep the scale down so that it will be repeatable more often? This is closely related to cost, in money and time to organise. See also question 1. 4/ How much emphasis do we want to place on construction of a laboratory/exhibition network as opposed to paper sessions? More hands-on fiddling means the option of having attendees have stuff explained to them as they do it, but requires a longer event. My Opinion: "The opinions expressed in this programme are bloody good ones." - F. Dagg I wish us to be very conservative in what we expect from the team of people we put together to organise this. I believe that if we choose a residential event we should piggyback it into UniForum NZ's event and seek to have them do a fair amount of the work for us. Conversely, if we choose a one-day event we should seek to cooperate with a host organisation - whether an education institution or a company - while ensuring that a NZNOG committee (yes, sorry, it has come to that) retains control over the programme. In either case a certain amount of exposure for vendors is to be expected. As to frequency, I'm inclined to go for as large an event as we think we can manage, and worry about the next one after we've learned about running one. Others may think differently. I believe that the composition of the committee/team/chain gang will vary depending on exactly what we're trying to achieve. So I'd like to see some discussion of these questions, and others that seem relevant _to potential attendees_ before we try to work out who's going to be asked to take the next steps. Conference

Hi all, I would like to confirm my interest in the conference. However I am somewhat sick and tired of the large amount of E-Mail this has generated in my inbox. (30+ messages per day). I would anticipate attending the conference to learn more about something, however I would prefer that the minority who wish to have a protracted debate on what this "something" is could do so in private, and then when they have made their mind up- then send the ideas to the list. Any comments? Based on what I have seen, I would like to learm more about the cable network setup/s. (As covered in recent posts). Beyond that, I am happy with whatever else. Hence, I only need one email to express my interest. Hi all, Here is another example of those "holier than thou" idiots at the Consumers Institute making official type/sounding comments on stuff they know nothing about: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/storydisplay.cfm?storyID=787311&thesection=techno… I assume that these are the same people who love "cheap" Internet Access, while forgetting the price/performance equation. Now they seek to put even more burden on the average low/no-profit ISP. Sorta reminds me of the show "Target" a little while back. Their technical xpurt amounted to no more than a television presenter/actor and their "investigations" for the most part are highly questionable in regards to honest and accurate reporting IMHO. InternetNZ (or more specifically its Vice-President Rick Shera) noticed a few days ago the possible ramifications of the law where ISPs can be caught in the middle between telcos and customers. Rick has put in a submission to the select cmte. ISPs and others could ask the Cmte Clerk if they can put in a late submission (they were due in by 15th). The Clerk is Marie Alexander, e-mail: SC-Commerce(a)parliament.govt.nz and phone: 64 4 471 9532. InternetNZ will make an oral submission on the bill also. Possibly an interested ISP could ask to be part of the delegation (adds credibility to have actual ISP there). Any examples etc of how this will unfairly penalise ISPs for things not under their control could forward such material onto Rick or Sue Leader. Call me conservative, but I would like to see a very successful small gathering that leaves us all wanting more (option1) rather than a large event that burns out the organisers, pauper the participants and satisfies no-one. (Cheap) Wireless bridging options ?

Hi Wireless guru's (he says hopefully :) In the next month or so I'm in need of a simple Wireless Bridge setup to temporarily Bridge the Ethernet's of two buildings for about 2 days. The distance is under 500 metres, and it must be bridged, not routed. I already have on hand a variety of old and new 802.11b wireless gear (Lucent/Orinoco) so I'd like to use what I have if possible. In particular I've got a couple of Lucent Wavepoint-II access points sitting around spare. The catch is that the normal access point firmware will not bridge between two access points, it will only connect to client stations. The client cards I have are also Lucent (Silver) cards, and those cannot do bridging as a client, as either the driver or firmware (probably the firmware) on the card doesn't allow it. (Believe me, I've tried, unless I've missed some trick :-) So I seem to have a few options: 1) Get the "Remote Outdoor Router" firmware and enabling keys for both access points - this would allow them to bridge two networks, but the cost is high - a bit of searching on the net and the lowest price I could find was around $800 NZ *each*. ~ $1600 for something that is only going to be needed for a couple of days is out of the question. 2) Some trick to be able to bridge with a Silver card being used in a "client" role. (No luck finding anything yet) 3) Abandon the Lucent cards and find some other card whose drivers allow bridging, and set up a linux machine (or linux boot disk) that will bridge between that card and the ethernet. Assuming the brand of card will connect to the Lucent Access point, the access point can do the bridging at the other end. If that wouldn't work, I'd need two of that kind of card and two PC's...(the PC's and the Linux boot disk aren't a problem, I'm pretty fluent in Linux) 4) Something else ? Any suggestions from those a bit more versed in Wireless techniques gratefully received.. NASA Television Streaming - Multicast or Unicast

Hello All, I've been trying to stream NASA Television into our television repeater CH 39 UHF here in Auckland for some time now. This will reduce the potential risk of radio hams losing CH 39 UHF. Raido Hams have recently lost 440 MHz to 449.750 MHz our previous TV reapeater input frequency. I know that the CH 39 UHF power levels are low with new linking equiptment being constructed and purchased.A power up grade is on the cards also. We have a high power broadcast tv transmitter but nowhere to install it without complaints (resource consents, power and site costs etc).We are unable to run this high power transmitter at our current site as there is no room for it. The club arrangement is a non profit order.This is a problem also. I hope this year will be an expansion year for CH 39 UHF. Currently we are under pressure such as the MED,RSM UHF TV call to for expressions of interest for community tv licences (CH 35 to 42).The other option is to apply for an ad-hoc licence after the first round of community licences have been let.If there are any left.Yes,ad-hoc as the MED,RSM call it. The CH 39 UHF Television Radio Ham exercise runs at low cost. Were trying to promote NASATV and encourage the public of all ages to get educated and have fun on the internet and internet ham radio. NASATV has many web sites constantly informing the world wide public to gain access and learn something in their lives.These web sites are often transmitted via CH 39 UHF and hopefully promote and encourage people to become aware of the need to have internet comunications.Get connected and live again. I see this as a win,win for all. 7kbps to 13kbps is not what broadband is about.The buffering is on and off constantly. My Jetstart service has some what been reduced ( some services disabled,Load Balancing ,IP assend IP desend,Multicasting disabled etc ). I have two Jetstart accounts with Telecom Xtra. All I really need is a quality multicast connection at no less than 64kbps.I can't de-compress 28kbps well enough to an acceptable level,tv-out full screen etc.100Kbps is even better but too costly at present.300kbps flys and de-compresses well.Its very expensive and still stops and starts with no connection or 7kbps to 16kbps with no picture and audio breaking up. Whats missing in customer contracts is the information disclosing what features (hardware or filters and services) are disabled or dis-allowed.A customer believes that they are purchasing full access to where they intend to connect. Configuring Ethernet Sub-Interface on a Cisco 2503?

Hello there, We currently peer to 2 providers. We have several SubNets of I.P's from them. Currently the Ethernet0 Interface of our Cisco Router handles all the I.P. Addresses. I was wondering if somebody here could advise me on how to create separate Sub-Interfaces for theses like we have with the Serial Interfaces. Our Ethernet Interface looks slightly like this at the moment: interface Ethernet0 description CISCO ROUTER ip address x.x.x.x x.x.x.x ip address x.x.x.x x.x.x.x secondary ip address x.x.x.x x.x.x.x secondary no ip directed-broadcast I wish to split these up into 3 Sub-Interfaces.
