We are experiencing an unusally high number of reports from customers connecting to CLEAR and XTRA having performance problems FTP'ing to our web servers. Worst times seem to be late afternoon and late at night. Given that our 2Mbps link to Netgate is idling along, one expects there are some issues between afore mention providers and Netgate. It was not uncommon to get the occasional report from an IHUG customer, but it seems CLEAR and XTRA have joined in :-) I dont have any traces as yet, just customer service stats recording large jump in calls on this topic. Anybody have any knowledge / facts that may explain above? Good lord, what a lot of nameservers :) I have chosen a selection from the replies I got -- I thought twenty nameservers for a single zone was probably over the top, and the selection below gives good diversity between different NZ networks. These were pretty much the first replies I got back. ns1.citylink.co.nz (203.97.231.226) [SOA] ns1.netlink.co.nz (202.20.93.10) ns1.clear.net.nz (203.97.33.14) ns1.ihug.net.nz (203.29.160.4) The zone should be ready for transfer from 203.97.231.226 right now. The New Zealand Network Operators' Group The New Zealand Network Operators' Group (NZNOG) has neither a king, a president nor a formal membership. At present it consists of the subscribers to this mailing list, which anyone is free to join. (At last count the list had around ninety subscribers, with the count growing slightly each month. The non-working address j.houlker(a)waikato.ac.nz was recently removed from the list. John is very welcome to resubscribe with a working address.) APE Update

Hi all, Things have been rather quiet on all this stuff for a while, so I thought I'd have a go at inciting some discussion. First, on a practical note -- despite the vaguaries of slipping network provisioning timescales and a million other things that have conspired to prevent it, CLEAR's ethernet switch should be live on L48, Sky Tower, early next week (the installer is telling me "Tuesday"). As I think I've mentioned before, CLEAR is not installing routers at the APE, but is rather will remote connect two major border routers to other exchange participants' equipment using an ethernet switch in the tower, and a 155M ATM drop back to Symonds Street. As soon as the switch is live, people are more than welcome to arrange a connection to it (contact me). Second, I read Richard's APE announcement on this (and other lists), and saw the articles in ComputerWorld, and was a little concerned about the picture that was painted. It seems to me that the Auckland Peering Exchange is an initiative which involves: + network operators + bilateral agreements between those operators + a colocation site and facilitator + individual agreements between operators and that facilitator + some means of connecting the operators together in a network sense Citylink have offered one method of connecting operators together in the tower, in the from of a managed ethernet switch. However, some of the press about this ignores the first four points above, and presumes that Citylink == APE. I have also heard from some Auckland operators who are confused at the apparent transition of the APE from a cooperative proposal to a commercial operation run by a single provider (Citylink). Note that I'm not trying to bash Richard's effort in this area -- far from it, I think what Citylink are proposing (as usual) is good. However, I think it is important to appreciate that once operators have arranged colo with JDA, and have installed their equipment in the tower, they are free to connect to other providers by whatever means suits them. Citylink do not have a monopoly on connectivity on the 48th floor. Hi all, I'm doing a bit of a review on some of the sites we're mirroring on ftp.clear.net.nz, in an attempt to keep the disk utilisation a little more under control. We're currently pulling down a bunch of things; the main disk-consumers are: ftp.freebsd.org:/pub/FreeBSD (4M without packages or 2.x) ftp.openbsd.org:/pub/OpenBSD (1M, 2.5 only) ftp.kernel.org:/pub/linux (5M without "software" tree) ftp.redhat.com:/pub/redhat (5M without srpms, 5.2 + 6.0 only) ftp.debian.org:/debian (6M without potato) Now, it seems to me that there's little point in mirroring content if there are other people in NZ already doing it -- for example, if there was a good debian mirror somewhere else, I'd be happy to replace the CLEAR Net debian mirror with a text file which says "see ftp.xxxx.yy.nz for this mirror" if it meant I could pull something else down that wasn't already in the country (like NetBSD, which was there but which I removed to make space for everything else). So, here's the question: does anybody know of other locations in NZ where the archives above are already mirrored? So why the delay in letting you know? Telecom undertook to supplement our notes of the meeting with written responses by close of day yesterday (Tuesday 29). As soon as these arrive we will make them available on the web-site. In the meantime we have decided to publish the written questions which ISOCNZ provided to Telecom on June 13 - fifteen days before the meeting. These questions were compiled from questions supplied by our stakeholders, primarily via the isocnz-l list. As the timeframe dragged out, the Council took the opportunity to refine the questions into subject groupings which would allow the topics to be more easily covered during the space of the meeting. Telecom had these questions several days in advance, as well as the original list of 33 questions. I've received an approach from a Malaysian ISP, wishing to contact their NZ equivalents, as the clocks turnover to '00. I would guess there there will be others, who are interested in how NZ is faring, and potentially use the 6, or 8, or 17 hours of leeway they have productively in the event of some unforeseen problem. I would rather not have the entire worlds ISP support staff phone their counterparts in NZ to enquire "How it going?". Given the fact many of them will simply want to silently observe that there is no problem, what is the best way to go about this? Let them subscribe to the nog? Form a special NOG for the brown-out period 11/99-1/00? Suggest that no-one in NZ really cares about the rest of the world, and they can all....... Appoint Peter Mott as a Y2K spokesman? and direct all enquiries to him? Any one any other suggestions? Many Thanks. The Y2K Commisiion wish to do just this on their web site, we are working with them on ways to minimise the probability of down time (basically geograpic dispersal and minimum dependence on proprietary code).
