What characterises an NGN?

If I look at: http://www.iec.org/online/tutorials/next_gen/ an NGN is defined as: "The next-generation network seamlessly blends the public switched telephone network (PSTN) and the public switched data network (PSDN), creating a single multiservice network. Rather than large, centralized, proprietary switch infrastructures, this next-generation architecture pushes central-office (CO) functionality to the edge of the network. The result is a distributed network infrastructure that leverages new, open technologies to reduce the cost of market entry dramatically, increase flexibility, and accommodate both circuit-switched voice and packet-switched data." Is it fair to assume that pushing CO functionality to the network edge requires an end-to-end managed solution? -- Juha

And if there's some appropriate way that smaller applications can be fitted within APNIC's requirements it'd be worth considering. However my recollection of what the University of Waikato was doing was that it was largely making allocations along the lines of the proposed "national internet registry" -- at least from the point of view of those receiving the allocations -- and 10 years later, it didn't turn out quite as smoothly as one might have hoped. So if it is done some thought will need to be given as to how one will ensure the "portable" assignments will remain "portable" for an extended period of time. Ewen

I agree in principle with Joe, APNIC are pretty easy to deal with, and for any reasonable robuts requirer of numbers, the costs are hardly prohibitive at US$2,000 one-off, plus US$1,250 per annum. But I guess the argument is that some people have a class C or 2 that they pay nothing for currently and would like to continue to pay nothing. As I said in my previous email, InternetNZ would be happy to step up to the plate if there really is a need - but I doubt we'd be in the business of supplying free number blocks. Given N subscribers to such a list, at M ISPs, the list of "mail servers the mail might come from" soon grows without bound, especially if one considers that the mail may be forwarded more than once (and yes, I encounter multiple forwards fairly often). As I said, this "what happens to forwarded mail" issue is the single biggest (and most contraversal) problem with SPF. And given that more sites are doing SPF checks it would be very helpful if more ISPs that provide mail forwarding services to their customers did so in a SPF-compatible way. Ewen PS: You might argue that users subscribing to such services should subscribe their final destination address, rather than one that forwards on to another account. However even ignoring the reasons why one might wish to subscribe an address the forwards somewhere else, the chances of all users acquiring such clue to do so seems... low.

Sendmail Question

Hi Guys, Just wondering if anyone has seen the ability to configure sendmail to match from address to the msg id field (after the @) or weather or not it should do this by default. eg: Nov 26 10:55:24 mail sm-mta[15318]: iAPLtBa7015318: from=<forest.stein_rk(a)fyna.com.au>, size=982, class=0, nrcpts=1, msgid=<53fc01c4d339$34ac1af3$45006654(a)africon.co.za>, proto=SMTP, daemon=MTA, relay=[65.126.46.48] I would imagine a hell of alot of SPAM would be returned if our mail server was matching @fyna.com.au with the @africon.co.za and finding that they dont match? thanks to everyone who replied. I was told by my ISP to change the ppp MTU from the default of 1514 to 250 a week ago because I was having problems connecting to another machine so I changed it to 512 just now and that enables me to view those sites again and access the other machine. regards to all tom PS I wasn't pointing the finger, I assumed knossos was correct but you're right about not troubleshooting properly, I only looked up the ns for yellowpages, not telecom. my bad :((

Hi Folks, Following email came to the WellyLUG list and I though the situation might be of interest to the NOG community. Given that Telecom is *the* provider of DSL, and bitstream is *the* unbundled option, issues in switching over customers should be paid close attention to! The customer affected now believes the issue to be related to a profile not being set to the right authentication server. Is anyone else out there successfully using unbundled DSL? How can we find out how many Bitstream customers there are? As part of the process of finalising the NZNOG 05 schedule it's been suggested that perhaps we have a session of lightning talks (it's been mentioned before but this is a semi-official call). Lightning talks are talks/presentations that last no more than 5 minutes. Several of them are usually run one after the other so that multiple speakers and topics can be covered in a short time. In particular, your concerns relate to the delay of the provision of this service to the market. In addressing this issue it is important to distinguish between the regulated UBS and the Telecom's commercial UBS. Access to a regulated UBS and corresponding backhaul service to be provided by Telecom was passed into law on 2 September 2004. Under the Telecommunications Act 2001, an Internet Service Provider (ISP) is entitled to apply to the Commerce Commission for a determination of the price and terms and conditions of an Internet grade UBS (with a minimum downstream speed of 256 Kbps) where the applicant is unable to commercially negotiate a satisfactory arrangement. As of today no ISP has applied to the Commission for such a determination. Alongside the regulated UBS, Telecom has on its own initiative offered a commercial UBS to market. The delays to which you refer are in relation to this voluntarily-provided service. The terms of Telecom's commercial UBS are available from Telecom. I understand that Telecom's commercial UBS promised by September has been delayed. Telecom says this is due to a "technical problem" which may take six months to resolve. Given ISPs have invested in marketing products dependent on this service, in the expectation that Telecom would deliver to its announced timeframe, I am concerned about the very short notice Telecom provided to these ISPs of the delay. However, I reiterate, this relates to Telecom's commercial UBS and not the regulated UBS. If an ISP cannot satisfactorily negotiate a commercial UBS, they should apply to the Commission for a determination to provide access to the regulated UBS. You also expressed concern that Telecom is able to advertise its commercial products while Telecom is not providing the service "it has been ordered" to provide and that Telecom is forcing customers into six month contracts preventing them from moving to other cheaper providers. As I explain above, Telecom is not under a legal obligation to provide the service that has been delayed. However, I encourage ISPs to apply for the regulated service if they are not satisfied with the commercial UBS offer. In regard to fixed term offers it is recommended consumers consider the range of offerings in the marketplace before committing to a specific fixed term. Given experiences to date under the Telecommunications Act 2001, I consider that there is potential to make improvements for the more timely achievement of the Act's objective ? the promotion of competition for the long term benefit of end users of telecommunications services. On October 11 2004 I announced a review of the Telecommunications Act 2001. Amongst other things, the review will look at improving the speed of resolution of key terms and conditions for supply of regulated services, including monitoring and enforcement issues, and improving the certainty and speed of processes for adding or altering regulated services. This project is a coordinated effort to move whois records for address space registered before the advent of the RIRs to the whois database of the RIR in whose region the registrant is based. In this final stage of the project, whois records for registrations within 192.0.0.0/8 are being moved from the ARIN database. If you operate a network in 192.0.0.0/8 and have: - registration information in more than one RIR database, or - have a postal address that lies outside the RIR's service region you will receive a mail regarding its registration. The mail explains in which database we believe the registration is meant to reside. The message also explains how to indicate which contact information should be recorded.
