MFAT mails out virus

Hi all. The Subject is kinda true. I'm on the MFAT mailing list which tells me which countries hate Kiwis at any point in time. And this morning it mailed out a strange message which had a subject of "The Auster story goes back into the 1930s." And came from an xtra email address. I just wrote it off as spam. It turns out though that the email contained a virus. Now it's not MFAT's fault (although I don't know what the list was doing unmoderated. I might look at sending out an Advisory for Kiwi's living in Sydney =) (THIS IS A JOKE!) But it does bring up a good point. Do list managers have a duty of care when it comes to scanning for viruses? My mail box is now filling up with messages from people virus scanners who are auto responding to the MFAT mailing list. Thoughts, Comments, Calls for me to shut the **** up? Locating (netwise) root and ccTLD name-servers by means other than a hint file

Anyone out there know if there are significant numbers of people using some means other that a bind 'hint' file[1] to locate TLD and ccTLD name-servers? I was under the impression that if the name-servers for a ccTLD were changed for some reason and this change accurately reflected in the root name-serves, pretty much the entire world would notice such a change within a little more than the objects TTL. However, I discovered a couple of hours ago that some of these 'alternative TLD' proponent sites out there are actually suggestion people not use a static hint file but rather AXFR "." from a server which they have set up... ignoring the obvious security implications here, there is no guarantee this information will be kept synchronized with the rest of the world and indeed in some instances appears to be inaccurate. Michael, I have CC this to NZNOG since wireless is the topic of the week. These are my guidelines . Outdoor networks are not toys. To build a proper outdoor network you need to do the following things. 1) Site Survey - Using diagnostic card or Spec Analyzer to determine the channels noise levels at 20 Degree increments. Build a pie graph that shows all 360 Degrees and elevation. From this you will know the right channel to use in the best direction. Never assume that since the link only goes 500m that you need not to worry. I have a POP that goes 20km that has the capacity to kill most radios on the same channel within 10KM radius. ( Transmit gain is a deadly weapon ). I condone the use of outdoor networks that are not site surveyed. 2) Network ID - Identify all the surrounding networks with the correct software ( Unnamed for others security ). Make sure you know the people that run these networks. You never know when you might need to ask them to change channels. Shooting there POP down does NOT give you a foot in the door. 3) Antenna Choice - 500m is not far, But using two 100 Degree leaky antennas with bad Rad patterns will introduce you to a lot of interference. Stick to a good Grid of 15 - 19dbi . Panels are OK if the patterns are good. Keep you beam tight and loose the gain in the cables. Run RG-50 to the antenna ( 6-8M MAX! ) and compensate with the bigger tighter antennas. DON'T USE OMNIS! ( but you all know that right :) ) 4) Equipment Choice. - Love Thy Neighbors. Use DSSS 11mb equipment with European Firmware. Stick to Channels 1-6-11 . These are the main points to ANY out door network. Scan / Map / Plan / Deploy Good Luck with the network. !!! Hi all, I have just recieved a condesending and irrelevant email from a list member (Who was attempting to second guess my setup/ application and got it totally wrong). To reiterate, I am after wireless access point/s for use with external roof top aerials. I am after more than one unit. I need a unit that can do point > multipoint (Lucent AP500/1000 or similar) and also interested in point to point style units for another project. In any case a unit has to be able to handle a external aerial and be 802.11b compat. When contacting me, please specify whether cards are included or not. (I don't mind). Access to smtp Telecom CDMA phones

I've got a guy from Telecom asking us to give access to our smtp servers (outgoing email) for our customers who are using in via CDMA phones to access the Internet. Just wondering how everybody else is doing this? Are you allowing the whole ip range to access your smtp servers, running smtp auth or something else? I'm inclined to just insist on smtp auth but I'm not sure some of the lower end clients that might be on the CDMA devices will support it. Extreme Electrical Failure...

...is what happened to ihug's Starnet/Satnet/Ultra gear the last time (I remember) lightning hitting the sky tower. There were also photos of the strike. Last night I saw 6 lightning strikes on the tower (including a REALLY big one) over about 30 minutes, but I haven't heard of anything being fried. And there don't seem to be any photos. Anyone know of any damage this time or have any photographic evidence of the strikes? This new type of censorship, promoted by a California corporation called Mail Abuse Prevention System, LLC (MAPS), silences every Web site whose address is located on a server that also happens to host one or two unrelated email marketing sites. However, since the browser message displayed says that the Web sites are non-existent, online surfers have no idea they are being denied access to many parts of the Internet. "This is stealth censorship*", remarked SafeSurf Chairman Ray Soular as he described how Web site owners have no rights under this system. "Mail Abuse Prevention System (MAPS) publicizes its Realtime Blackhole List (RBL) as being only of certified email abusers (spammers). It provides this list to Internet Service Providers (ISP) who rely on its accuracy when shutting out these spammers. In reality, MAPS' practice of listing entire groups of IP numbers, instead of the specific addresses of the spammers, is causing ISPs to shut off access to sites that have done no wrong other than they have similar IP numbers to the spammers. Its like shutting off phone service to thousands of people simply because they have the same prefix as an obscene caller," explained Soular. "To make matters worse, MAPS has no idea of what content it may be blocking. Imagine trying to connect to a crisis assistance site after a devastating earthquake, only to find its among a vast IP group being blocked by RBL. People can die as the result of their blind imprecision. They MUST be regulated," Soular reasoned. Teleglobe, a global Internet provider who subscribes to the MAPS' Realtime Blackhole List (RBL), was blocking SafeSurf in many countries, simply because SafeSurf's Web site was on a public server owned by an hosting company once accused of providing services to email marketers. (News Flash Oct 29, 2001: MAPS removed SafeSurf from its Blackhole list and Teleglobe removed blocking.) "Under their system, an unsuspecting Web site can become a RBL hostage at any time, for any reason, and without appeal. Unless the owner of the server meets MAPS demands, the innocent hostage site will be left to rot in the 'Blackhole'," pointed out Soular. As a result, by blocking SafeSurf, MAPS is endangering millions of children across the globe. MAPS' RBL blocking is censorship in its worst manifestation. It is a extremist system that seeks to censor people simply because they happen to be with the same ISP that has a particular individual that MAPS does not like. Their tactics would be similar to someone using a nuclear weapon to wipe out a cockroach. Although they may contact the ISP, MAPS makes no effort, whatsoever, to warn the people actually being censored. The innocent Web Sites have to depend on others to discover that their right to free speech has been desecrated. MAPS actions demonstrate what SafeSurf has long suspected; true censorship arises for the purpose of advancing the agenda of a particular group of individuals. Censorship is a broad brush that drips paint on the pure, as well as the tainted. MAPS may claim that their actions are in the interest of good, but in reality they would easily trade in the good of children to achieve their goal. They have more than proved this point by holding the SafeSurf Web Site hostage until they force the acquiescence of others. MAPS has no idea of what content it may be blocking. Therefore, they could negligently block sites that contain important life saving medical information, sites that protect children, and sites that output emergency info during tornado watches, fire and flood alerts. Imagine trying to connect to a crisis assistance site after a devastating earthquake, only to find its among a vast IP group being blocked by RBL. People can die as the result of their blind imprecision. They MUST be regulated. We hate spam as much as anyone else. SafeSurf receives hundreds of spam emails every day. However, we cherish our civil liberties too much to ever trade them to the careless people who are running MAPS. We have tried to reason with MAPS, but they refuse to offer affected Web sites a case-by-case appeal process. They seem to not care about fairness. They are blinded by the smell of spammer's blood and do not seem to care how many innocent Web sites they trounce in the process. Then, they rationalize and try to put the blame for their wanton actions on everyone else. This issue is completely different from the debate over porn filtering, because in that debate, at least it was agreed that the sites we were discussing were responsible for their acts. In this case, MAPS employs an underhanded tactic of targeting the innocent in order to persuade the guilty. We must insist that MAPS operate in a responsible manner. A just cause is no excuse for unjust actions. By accepting MAPS, we are, in effect, agreeing to full censorship of anyone, for any reason. This is beyond the worst-case scenarios we could've imagined coming from governments. MAPS may be on a crusade to rid the Internet of spam, but this should not give them the authority to deny freedoms to the blameless. It should not give them the power to shroud someone's brilliance simply because it happens to be on a MAPS targeted ISP. It should not give them the right to make a mockery of the pillars upon which America was built. I feel sorry for all the subscribers to Teleglobe, which trusts MAPS' RBL list. They have traded access to the truth in exchange for a cleaner mailbox. The really sad part is they don't even know it. We must raise our voices to warn the online world of stealth censorship. For in the end, we will either loudly hold on to our liberty or it will become clear that we gave up our rights by our silence. As you will know - Orcon is a wholesaler to a large number of ISP's and web hosting companies around NZ. If a customer of one of the ISP's we service SPAM's - we don't cut the ISP off for inadvertently spamming by way of their customer - because it's not their fault. Any issues like this are generally referred to the ISP hosting the customer. With regard to our terms and conditions there is a clear distinction between customers directly on our network, and wholesale customers who have their own networks and customers behind us. I can assue you, as will have been evidenced in the past, that direct customers of ours on our network who spam or cause problems are dealt with swiftly, however wholesale customers are generally allowed to make their own rules about what must or must not be allowed in the case of spamming. In this issue, cutting of strongnet because of the actions of Phil Hunt would affect a lot more customers than simply him alone. As a wholesale customer, I am affecting all their customers as well if I take such action. It is important to understand that an individual is not necessarily equivalent to a company, and where we have wholesale contracts with a company, the actions of one director may not be warrant, justify or allow the removal of services to that company. There are some issues which people will not be aware of that make this very complicated for us, and as I have said - we are in the middle. I certainly do not condonde the actions that have happend, however suggesions from people to "cut Strongnet off!" are not helpful when not all the facts may be known. You can be assured that myself and Orcon act with the utmost of integrity, and that I am not simply "changing the rules" for one particular customer. While not condoning Philip Hunt's actions in this regard, we are placed in a very difficult position. Our terms and conditions state that we do not allow users to send spam from our network, however when this user is a business, and the lifeblood of their business is providing Internet services - to cut them off would mean the end of their ability to function. Because of this, I feel that it is fair to give a warning only rather than a suspension of services. I am trying to be fair to all parties - including the wider Internet community - and wanted to let everyone know where I stand. I guess we are stuck in the middle on this one. Its only fair that you make your own minds up about the spam and a copy is below. My perspective is that spam sucks, but at least we theoretically in New Zealand we have great network administrators (I do note Xtra as an exception here after previous experience) that we can have tell the users off and reduce/prevent spam. However when a network is involved, who does the telling off? Networks/Service providers by involvement in the industry should hopefully already know that spam is wrong, therefore a telling off is pointless and punishment realistically should be an option. Exactly how is the hard bit, and hopefully the press will do their part to expose these questionable StrongNet ethics. Who knows perhaps NZNOG being notified of peers who are spamming may be punishment enough in the long term, it is a very small industry. After getting six of these emails, there is no way I would deal with StrongNet in the future, however realistically I may not have in any case. But Phillip Hunt and StrongNet are now forever etched in my 'memory' of New Zealand based spammers and dodgey people. I've seen the list, and response from Steve Phillips asking for time. I've received a copy of the SPAM in question. There is an accusation made that Domainz data was used to generate the SPAM. Freely available zone-xfers were turned off several months ago, so it is possible that an out of date zone-xfer could have been used. I have no idea beyond this what/how/why. There is no policy on this, other than the generic - "thou shalt not SPAM". It might be useful therefore that the industry generates it's own policy on this. What is a suitable penalty? An example of what could be easily implemented would be a modest delay to registration change overs. ================================================================== Recent SPAMMING of the entire .NZ by the Melbourne Company ING with the suggestion that failure to act would not permit pre-registration of .info and .biz resulted in the suspension of ability to do DNS changes. That company remains suspended until a meaningful "I'm Sorry" is forthcoming, at their expense. ================================================================= Two points. An "I'm Sorry" wouldn't go amiss. You know who you are. A thoughtful discouse would be useful about how transgressors may have their rights limited for a period of time, so as to encourage the correct behaviour would be something we would be happy to help create.
