At one stage we tried 12.0(5)T on 5 different boxes, all five failed with different faults ;-) 12.0(7)T1 is apparently the last in the 12.0T stream with 12.1 being its replacement (apparently within a couple of weeks). I think you should go to 12.0(7)T1 if you need T features. More specificvally, it will help you: 1) Recognize programs used to facilitate DDoS attacks 2) Apply measures to prevent the attacks 3) Gather forensic information if you suspect an attack 4) Learn more about host security I have recently had the opportunity to try the "ip verify unicast reverse-path" command in a lab environment, it works with CEF on Cisco IOS 12.0. It seems relatively effective with about a 30% increase in distributed CPU utilisation (ie. 10% becomes 13%, not 40%). We had every packet flooding an interface with bogus source addresses, it happily discarded them all. And yes, it even forwarded the packets with valid source addresses ;-) It seems best suited to run at the edge of the network in from your downstream customers. There is no point running it on links in from upstream providers in most cases. We also lab tested Turbo Access-Lists, and found them very effective on long access-lists, the worst case the CPU increased loading on a VIP by about 40%, as opposed to a 200 entry non-Turbo Access-list which increased distributed CPU utilisation by as much as 95%. Large Scale Internet Attacks - Technical article.

Gentlefolk (are there any women on this list????) I thought this sufficiently interesting to post to the NOG, so that it may help anyone who is considering how to avoid these attacks in the future. I have removed all the sales guff (I hope). I hope this is of use. ==================================================================== At one account they were all Cisco. They were blown up by a massive amount of spoofed SYN flood attacks. The PIX did stop the SYN floods it did see, however most of traffic never reached the PIX because the egress router had a of overflow of traffic. I have personal experience with the account. We had recommended they put anti-spoofing filters and CAR filtering for ICMP on the egress routers. They told us they would not put any filters on the routers because they did not want to lose any performance. The attacks were designed to take advantage of a specific flaw in the network design of the target. This discovered by using an automated tool that tries literality hundreds of different exploits till it finds a successful avenue of attack. Since the hackers tools try over hundred types of exploits, it is possible that if the customer had implemented the egress filtering that we had recommend than the hackers would have been able to crash them with some other attack. However, a continual theme is that there are a large number of sites on the Internet, and the well defended sites tend to get ignored by this type of attack. Since these criminals don't tend to be very clever, in fact they seem downright lazy, they only go after sites that can be assaulted with off the shelf tools. In the case of one web portal, the attack was a BSD UNIX specific attack that rides on port 80 like any other HTTP traffic. It went thought the Cisco router and a Checkpoint firewall, just like it is supposed to do. Had the network administrator patched their Web servers with against this known type of attack, then the exploit would have done not worked at all. In one of the e commerce sites, they were blown up by a Smurf attack. However, the attack was against the upstream ISP, not the e commerce site itself. To prevent from SMURF attack you have to code this command on each Cisco router interfaces in your network. Alternatively, a packet filter on boundary router blocking any IP packet destined to *.0 or *.255 would do the trink but you still need "no ip directed-broadcast" to deal with the directed broadcast originating from your internal network. Cache testing

Hi all, I'm doing a little bit of cache testing, and I'm looking for a nice, realistic-looking list of objects to fetch from the web; I'm going to use it as a test set to compare different boxes. Anybody care to share a log from a busy-hour cache that's used for residential internet access? All I'm after is a list of URLs to fetch (hits _and_ misses) so anonymised logs are fine. w95.fix2001 worm infection os doing the rounds...

I couldn't really think of a better place to send this... A couple of days ago we noticed some of our customers seem to have been infected by the w95.fix2001 worm. In brief, this is a small windows executable that infects '95 and '98 machines when run (yes, some people do run executables without checking...). It watches for outgoing email and send copies of itself to the addresses it sees there from <admin__(a)local.domain> with a message-id of <Fix2001(a)microsoft.com>; under some circumstances it will replace command.com with malicious code that will toast the hard-disk when next booted. Note, this is not a new worm, most anti-virus vendors should have been able to detect this since mid-September 1999, but obviously, not everyone runs AV software. For more details, please see: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w95.fix2001.html Now, as I mentioned, it has been doing the rounds -- grep you maillogs for (or the message ID) admin__ and you should see it if it has come you way, certainly before we put a `block' in (see below) I saw a number of incoming messages to our customers and several outgoing to people at other NZ ISPs. [announcement] NZ-REGISTRARS project

Warning: of only tangential operational significance http://www.patho.gen.nz/nz-registrars/ I am trying to coordinate some open discussion about an automated interface between registrar and registry, such as might be used by an ISP or web hosting company to manage new domain registration and domain deletion, and to manage modifications of the register. There are many different ways of doing this with gTLD and ccTLD registries at the moment, and no agreed standard approach. This project is an attempt to allow interested parties to build a specification for an interface that will meet their specific needs. This project is not endorsed by ISOCNZ or Domainz, although it is to be hoped that if we can reach good agreement within the industry about what our requirements are, ISOCNZ might listen. The NZ-REGISTRARS mailing list is a technical forum; the idea is to avoid politics and grandstanding as far as possible. The intent is to produce a comprehensive design, and stable, flexible running code, nothing more. A rapid summary of the potential features of the interface under discussion: + a strict XML representation for all transactions between registry and registrar + a choice of transport for exchanging transaction elements (e.g. e-mail, CORBA, DCOM, HTTP, whois) + batch and real-time transaction support + full version history/modification log for all records + strong authentication + compatability shims to allow transactions and query results to be accepted and presented in foreign formats, e.g. RIPE-181, NSI whois, NSI e-mail templates, Domainz whois, Domainz web-based query, Domainz e-mail channel template All are welcome. .nz registry lame delegations

Does anybody have any ideas on how to stop the .nz registry delegating names to ones name servers when they are not authoratative nor permission obtained for their use? This happens when they "reinstate" a domain after it has been suspended, usually for non payment of registration fees. I've tried asking them privately, but they dont seem to understand. I had to delurk for this... Standardisation of email addresses. One of the good reasons behind RFC2142 seems to have been lost here. With the standard mailboxes specified, it ensures that when I email those email addresses, I can expect the emails to land in the mailbox of the people who are in charge of that particular task. Patrick O'brien did a search of the database and came up with the "username" statistics. That is fine that they don't use the standard addressing as they are specifying their own. The idea behind the standardised mailboxes is that if all else fails emailing that particular username should work. For example if someone in that datbase was named as joe(a)domainname.co.nz had left and the domain name didn't update it. SHould I wish to contact the technical contact (who was joe(a)domainname.co.nz) and it bounced because joe had left, I can then send it to postmaster or one of the other admin addresses. I often have to contact administrators regarding abuse like spam, DOS attacks etc. As long as I know the domain name, I don't have to think about it. I should be sure that if I emailed abuse(a)domainame, the email will get to the person who handles it. Whether abuse is an actual mailbox or an alias that points to someone else's mailbox or a .forward in some account is immaterial to me. It becomes a problem is we have to contact a domain's administrative contact and the email to abuse@ (or postmaster@ or soa@ etc) bounces and we have no other means of finding out the email address since finger does not work, there is no whois available for that country (or gtld), or no website for that domain. Only avenue is to traceroute and contact their upstream provider hoping that they will be able to forward that. This is why if people do know about RFC2142 and do try to adhere to the compulsory bits of it, it would make life easier for everyone. When Rex was on board we got a reply within minutes on most days. Our experience was similar to Jamie's with outbound traffic more than three times the usual, we shifted a little traffic just in case but it dropped rapidly after midnight. Overall it was a quiter 24 hours inbound than usual. As for the timestamp on my mail ... it's my Linux machine I only ever use when I'm offsite, and you're lucky it doesn't say 1984 !!! DNS Spring Cleaning -- Final four full days

Happy New Year to you all, The DNS Spring Cleaning Project has now entered its final four full days. http://www.domainz.net.nz/newsstand/stories/SpringCleaning.html The program specially developed for analysis of the .nz domain space expires by January 7, so there is still time to take advantage right now. PROGRESS SO FAR ================ To-date, the results have been impressive. By last week, over 700 individual visitors had been to the site to download almost 550 copies of the special .nz program. Our surveys tell us that you've made changes to you DNS configurations that have fixed around 4,000 errors that the .nz program picked up. That is tremendous, so thanks. We've also seen significant reductions in the number of .nz domain names showing errors, moving from 28% of the .nz Register down to 25%. More detailed results of the last survey can be found at the Men and Mice site, http://sc.menandmice.com/statistic.html .nz TECHNICAL CONTACT DETAILS ============================ On a separate but connected note, we emailed all technical contacts listed in the .nz DNS 2 weeks ago with some startling results -- there was a bounce rate around 14% !!!! One purpose of the Technical contact is to be reachable so as to deal with any technical issues relating to the hosting of a domain -- this cannot happen where the email address is bouncing :() The key reasons that we could ascertain for this high rate were three fold:- 1. Using personal names -------------------------------------------- There are a considerable number of ISP's that use an individual person's name (eg fred(a).. or mary(a)...) rather than a functional name (eg dns(a)... or soa(a)...), and most bounced mail came from the former category. ISP's should consider the use of functional names for their technical contact rather than individual names, as the former have much more "permanence". 2. Name Holder listed as technical contact ------------------------------------------------------------------ There are a few ISP's that put the Name Holder's name as the technical contact and this does not appear to be updated as the Name Holder's details change. Moreover, most Name Holders who fell into this category and responded to our email knew precious little about the technical details of hosting their domain name. The technical contact should be someone who understands the technical issues of a domain name. Typically we would expect to see the organisation with the technical wherewithal to host the domain name shown in this field. ISP's should check to ensure that they list the appropriate technical contact person. 3. Not keeping details current ------------------------------------------------ The final category reflected organisations that had not kept current the domain name information. In many cases, it followed the move of a domain name from one ISP to another. Generally the IP details had been updated to make the domain work, but no other details (Name Holder, Billing, Technical contact) had changed. ISP's need to ensure that they do keep all domain details up-to-date, particularly when a domain name is moved from another ISP. Anyone know of any real issues aside from PSTN congestion?

Out of curiosity... Does anyone know if any real problems aside form heavy PSTN congestion? Presumably these issues would be also paranoia induced such as perhaps power-spikes cause by everyone testing the lights at 00:01... (perhaps there is an equivalent here with water supply?) The New Zealand Network Operators' Group The New Zealand Network Operators' Group (NZNOG) has neither a king, a president nor a formal membership. At present it consists of the subscribers to this mailing list, which anyone is free to join. At the beginning of the last year of the twentieth century (or the zeroth year of the twenty-first, if you prefer) the list had 120 subscribers, with the count growing slightly each month.) The address hpeturs(a)clear.co.nz was removed from the list earlier today. The user of that address is welcome to resubscribe with an address which sends me fewer bounce messages. The NZNOG mailing list is provided through a server at The University of Waikato, and is administered by an employee of Telecom NZ Ltd. Neither of these organisations (nor the administrator) is responsible for its content. NZNOG Mailing List Acceptable Use Policy The NZNOG mailing list exists to provide a forum for the exchange of technical information and the discussion of implementation issues that require cooperation among New Zealand network service providers. In order to continue to provide a useful forum for discussion of relevant technical issues, users of the list are asked to respect the following guidelines. 1. Discussion will focus on Internet operational and technical issues. 2. Discussion related to meetings of network service providers is appropriate. 3. Discussion unrelated to these topics is not appropriate. 4. Postings to multiple mailing lists are discouraged. 5. Postings that include foul language, character assassination, and lack of respect for other participants are unacceptable. 6. Blatant product or service marketing is unacceptable. 7.
