ISOCNZ technical committee, Thanks very much for the opportunity to comment (and hopefully influence) the Zone transfer and Whois policies, *before having the council vote on them.* DRAFT ZONE TRANSFER POLICY (http://www.isocnz.org.nz/zfdraft1099.html) ========================================================== Great to see that "No reasonable request shall be refused." A/ In item 3. it explicitly lists "simply for the gathering of statistical analysis" as being undesirable. Surely we can remove this phrase. The no spam bit I endorse but no statistics is a bit closed shop isn't it.? B/ In item 3 it provides for 'private name' servers. What is the objection to (shadow) public but non authoritative name servers. Surely these are OK in an open environment.? An ISP may want to improve response times for it's customers and help unload the official authoritative name servers, this would help robustness with perhaps a greater diversity of machines and operators. If it is OK for Auckland University then why not an ISP? DRAFT WHOIS POLICY (http://www.isocnz.org.nz/whoisdraft1099.html) ==================================================== Starts off well pointing out the expectation that "It is used generally by system administrators." A/ Surely to be useful for an ISP administrator, the ISP needs to be able to be sure that it is the current authoritative contents of the official database but instead we have "NZIRL does not guarantee its accuracy". Also I do not believe that ISOCNZ policy should include a disclaimer on behalf of NZIRL, I think people need to be clear which hat is being worn when they write this. B/ Surely to be useful to ISP administrators, one of the major differences in using a Whois instead of a web page is that it *CAN* be used for efficient automated definitive lookups etc. Why specifically ""under no circumstances will you use this Data to ...enable high volume, automated, electronic processes ", I thought that was largely what the objective was. OVERALL ========= If we make the above changes (open statistics gathering, open shadow name servers, accuracy of whois with efficient automation) we might allow for ISP's wanting to provide equivalent or alternative services to the registry in an efficient manor, without them it looks very centralist. Looking for Web servers to ping - network research

Dear NZnoggers, there are currently some research projects going on which try to measure the health and state of the Internet on a global and local scale. University of Waikato Computer Science is hosting a skitter server for CAIDA, the UCSD-based Internet Research Corporation. The skitter project involves pinging (ICMP traffic) a larger number of "interesting" hosts on the Internet and drawing some conclusions about reachability, network load, performance etc. These people are expanding their scope and would like to find new destinations they could ping on a regular basis. Web servers are of high interest. If you are a network administrator, web administrator etc, who is willing to support such research (and potentially receive valuable information from active network measurements), please get back to me as soon as possible. The New Zealand Network Operators' Group The New Zealand Network Operators' Group (NZNOG) has neither a king, a president nor a formal membership. At present it consists of the subscribers to this mailing list, which anyone is free to join. (At last count the list had a little over one hundred subscribers, with the count growing slightly each month.) The NZNOG mailing list is provided through a server at The University of Waikato, and is administered by an employee of Telecom NZ Ltd. Neither of these organisations (nor the administrator) is responsible for its content. whois.patho.gen.nz now working again

Hi, Just in case anybody missed it :) whois.patho.gen.nz is now reporting correctly again, pulling registration info from http://domainz.waikato.ac.nz/cgi-bin/DNZ-REGISTER. The extended breakage wasn't due to any re-formatting of the data returned by that script at waikato, incidentally; it was entirely due to the fact that the little awk script which drives whois.patho.gen.nz was using character class extensions which are specified in POSIX 1003.2, and implemented in gawk, but sadly misinterpreted by whatever awk OpenBSD installs in /usr/bin. Well, actually the extended-ness of the breakage was more to do with the fact that I wasn't bored enough to look at it until now. nz.whois-servers.net is a CNAME for tardis.patho.gen.nz, which is nice of them. Since 1997, I've been walking the in-addr tree every quarter, looking for numbers of delegations, accurate delegations, and types and styles of error conditions. So... this is a heads up that you will be seeing zone transfers being generated by a couple of the collecter machines here. For those of you who utilize BINDs access controls, I'd appreciate your inclusion of the collector machines in allowed transfers. Queries will be from the following IP addresses: 128.9.160.57 and 198.32.4.13 If there are any questions or concerns, I'd be happy to talk about them. Past data has been presented at IEPG, Apricot and RIPE meetings. The expectation is that future data will be presented in the same and similar forums. The pilot of 5200 went perfectly, the implementation was hell. Petition for provision of WHOIS server for .nz

Its been several years since requests commenced for an industry standard WHOIS server providing public access to .nz registry data. We still do not have one. 2day.com is now preparing a petition to present to ISOCNZ requesting it direct the registry company to have an official .nz WHOIS server up and operating within 60 days. Internet providers and other interested organisations who are interested in signing such a petition are invited to write to me privately to obtain a copy of the document to sign and return to us for compilation. The outage of ns99.waikato.ac.nz was not unexpected. But the length of the outage *was* unexpected. The University had to power down some of its comms gear at 4am Sunday so the power could be changed to a different phase on our UPS (we have a bad phase inbalance). Some machines had a previous history of not liking the main IP switch being powered off, especially those Intel boxes with DEC ethernet cards. And Domainz2 (aka ns99) is one of those. It took a long time to get ns99 working because it seemed to be destroying switch ports. Several switch ports had to be tried before one was found that ns99 liked :-) . I would like to point out that the only time connectivity to ns99 is critical is about 4:30pm each working day when the zone file are reloaded. Folks: You may recall the APEC TEL study on Internet costs that I have raised on a small number of occasions. This is now known as ICAIS (for: International Charging Arrangements for Internet Services) and is proceeding. The group conducting the study are to issue a survey and we need 5 people from major ISPs in NZ to volunteer to assist by completing a pilot study in fairly short order (before mid September). There will be more responses sought at a later date. I have appended a copy of the original message below. I would appreciate anyone prepared to assist to contact me directly and I will pass the contact details on. I guess we need (if possible) someone from Telecom/Xtra; Clear; IHUG; Voyager and at least one more. The New Zealand Network Operators' Group The New Zealand Network Operators' Group (NZNOG) has neither a king, a president nor a formal membership. At present it consists of the subscribers to this mailing list, which anyone is free to join. (At last count the list had a little over ninety subscribers, with the count growing slightly each month.) The NZNOG mailing list is provided through a server at The University of Waikato, and is administered by an employee of Telecom NZ Ltd. Neither of these organisations (nor the administrator) is responsible for its content. NZNOG Mailing List Acceptable Use Policy The NZNOG mailing list exists to provide a forum for the exchange of technical information and the discussion of implementation issues that require cooperation among New Zealand network service providers. domestic congestion?

We are experiencing an unusally high number of reports from customers connecting to CLEAR and XTRA having performance problems FTP'ing to our web servers. Worst times seem to be late afternoon and late at night. Given that our 2Mbps link to Netgate is idling along, one expects there are some issues between afore mention providers and Netgate. It was not uncommon to get the occasional report from an IHUG customer, but it seems CLEAR and XTRA have joined in :-) I dont have any traces as yet, just customer service stats recording large jump in calls on this topic. Anybody have any knowledge / facts that may explain above? These were pretty much the first replies I got back. ns1.citylink.co.nz (203.97.231.226) [SOA] ns1.netlink.co.nz (202.20.93.10) ns1.clear.net.nz (203.97.33.14) ns1.ihug.net.nz (203.29.160.4) The zone should be ready for transfer from 203.97.231.226 right now. The New Zealand Network Operators' Group The New Zealand Network Operators' Group (NZNOG) has neither a king, a president nor a formal membership. At present it consists of the subscribers to this mailing list, which anyone is free to join. (At last count the list had around ninety subscribers, with the count growing slightly each month. The non-working address j.houlker(a)waikato.ac.nz was recently removed from the list. John is very welcome to resubscribe with a working address.) The NZNOG mailing list is provided through a server at The University of Waikato, and is administered by an employee of Telecom NZ Ltd. Neither of these organisations (nor the administrator) is responsible for its content. NZNOG Mailing List Acceptable Use Policy The NZNOG mailing list exists to provide a forum for the exchange of technical information and the discussion of implementation issues that require cooperation among New Zealand network service providers. In order to continue to provide a useful forum for discussion of relevant technical issues, users of the list are asked to respect the following guidelines. 1. Discussion will focus on Internet operational and technical issues. 2. Discussion related to meetings of network service providers is appropriate. 3. Discussion unrelated to these topics is not appropriate. 4. Postings to multiple mailing lists are discouraged. 5. Postings that include foul language, character assassination, and lack of respect for other participants are unacceptable. 6. Blatant product or service marketing is unacceptable. 7. Postings of a political, philosophical or legal nature are discouraged. 8. Postings to the list should be in ASCII or MIME encoded as text/plain. Attachments should not be sent to the list. APE Update

Hi all, Things have been rather quiet on all this stuff for a while, so I thought I'd have a go at inciting some discussion. First, on a practical note -- despite the vaguaries of slipping network provisioning timescales and a million other things that have conspired to prevent it, CLEAR's ethernet switch should be live on L48, Sky Tower, early next week (the installer is telling me "Tuesday"). As I think I've mentioned before, CLEAR is not installing routers at the APE, but is rather will remote connect two major border routers to other exchange participants' equipment using an ethernet switch in the tower, and a 155M ATM drop back to Symonds Street. As soon as the switch is live, people are more than welcome to arrange a connection to it (contact me). Second, I read Richard's APE announcement on this (and other lists), and saw the articles in ComputerWorld, and was a little concerned about the picture that was painted. It seems to me that the Auckland Peering Exchange is an initiative which involves: + network operators + bilateral agreements between those operators + a colocation site and facilitator + individual agreements between operators and that facilitator + some means of connecting the operators together in a network sense Citylink have offered one method of connecting operators together in the tower, in the from of a managed ethernet switch. However, some of the press about this ignores the first four points above, and presumes that Citylink == APE. I have also heard from some Auckland operators who are confused at the apparent transition of the APE from a cooperative proposal to a commercial operation run by a single provider (Citylink). Note that I'm not trying to bash Richard's effort in this area -- far from it, I think what Citylink are proposing (as usual) is good. However, I think it is important to appreciate that once operators have arranged colo with JDA, and have installed their equipment in the tower, they are free to connect to other providers by whatever means suits them. Citylink do not have a monopoly on connectivity on the 48th floor. Hi all, I'm doing a bit of a review on some of the sites we're mirroring on ftp.clear.net.nz, in an attempt to keep the disk utilisation a little more under control. We're currently pulling down a bunch of things; the main disk-consumers are: ftp.freebsd.org:/pub/FreeBSD (4M without packages or 2.x) ftp.openbsd.org:/pub/OpenBSD (1M, 2.5 only) ftp.kernel.org:/pub/linux (5M without "software" tree) ftp.redhat.com:/pub/redhat (5M without srpms, 5.2 + 6.0 only) ftp.debian.org:/debian (6M without potato) Now, it seems to me that there's little point in mirroring content if there are other people in NZ already doing it -- for example, if there was a good debian mirror somewhere else, I'd be happy to replace the CLEAR Net debian mirror with a text file which says "see ftp.xxxx.yy.nz for this mirror" if it meant I could pull something else down that wasn't already in the country (like NetBSD, which was there but which I removed to make space for everything else). So, here's the question: does anybody know of other locations in NZ where the archives above are already mirrored?
