I'm doing some work for a customer that involves SNMP stuff, and we've been talking about SNMPv3 and there was a comment that while $tool and $elements can use SNMPv3 they haven't done it yet. It's made me wonder about how pervasive SNMPv3 is, and the skill level out there of people who understand SNMP in general. So, quick survey that might inspire a choreographed rant from me at the next NZNOG. If you can't answer one or two questions that's OK, SNMP can be a bit weird. - Are you using SNMPv3? - Why/Why not? - Are you using contexts? - Auth, privacy, both? - Does your organisation have much SNMP(1|2c|3) skill - do you know how to interpret MIB files, do queries, do one-off short-term real-time monitoring of devices, and things like that? - Do you have your own enterprise ID (PEN)? [Reply] HI all, I had a conversation over dinner with an ECPAT person some years ago. While doing good work, they seemed to believe that because technology allowed images to be scanned for "flesh colours" then every email, attachment, and website should be filtered. I tried to explain technology and cost issues, and then the fact that any system, once implemented, would/could be easily bypassed by the "perverts", leaving Joe Public to pay the costs for an expensive white elephant. There was also blindness to the possible abuses by the operators of such a system, particularly where the filtering rules are hidden. So we may well have a case of political operators riding the "noble cause(s)". So we best be aware here. L2TP load generation

Hi team, I'm working on some software that does L2TP LNS stuff. It's kind of experimental right now and may end up just being cast in to my bucket of code I can't be bothered with anymore, but I'd like to get an idea for how it performs nonetheless. Does anyone have a reasonably featured router tester, or some other way of generating lots of L2TP load (new connections, packet rate, etc.) that I could borrow some time on, or perhaps trade for some IPv6/etc. know how? These objects are used to configure the various NZIX route servers (http://nzix.net/) so you can expect the relevant servers to be reloaded in the near future. Following the current court ruling by Justice Cowdroy in the Federal Court last Thursday we will modify this practice in the near future. We will continue to send any infringement notice we receive in the future but before the end of February we will not require the user to acknowledge receipt of it nor will we temporarily block the customer's internet access. Xtra temporarily deferred MX

A client is complaining that a user at Xtra is not receiving email they sent. I sent a test email and viewed the MX logs and found the following: mx1.tnz.mail.yahoo.com[124.108.96.67] refused to talk to me: 421 Message from (DELETED) temporarily deferred - 4.16.50. Please refer to http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/mail/defer/defer-06.html This is also appearing on other mail servers with other senders. Is this something Xtra is doing across the board or is there another explanation? The web link showing has no information corresponding to the status result.

Sky Tower L47 - L48 Tie Cables

Hi Folks, A couple of years back we put in a patch panel in Community Cabinet #1 on L48 with 16 copper ties down to one of our cabinets on L47. This allowed us to have direct copper ties to all of our customers who take L2 handoff from us. Those ties are full now, and we need more. I've also noticed that in the recent past L48 has become pretty congested and normal non-radio folks are starting to take cabinets on L47 - leading to more demand for tie cables up to the action on L48. Is there interest amongst the masses for some coordinated physical ties between L47 and L48? A wall-mount cabinet at each level with a couple hundred copper ports with blocked reserved for particular users would be ideal and a huge cost savings. This might be a locked cabinet with Technical Rigging and JDA owning the keys, with only TRS running the cables from it to racks on the floor. I'm happy to talk to JDA about this if there's interest. NZNOG 2011 planning

Hi everyone NZNOG 2010 is over and now is time to start looking towards NZNOG 2011. First of all, your org team for NZNOG 2010 was: Jonny Martin Dean Pemberton Sam Sargeant Gerard Creamer Alastair Johnson Neil Fenemor Richard Nelson and myself Many thanks to everyone on that list. Ours hosts for NZNOG 2010 were the WAND group and Rural Link. Without them the conference would not have been possible. First of all we need to appoint an org team to manage NZNOG 2011. If you are interested in being part of the org team for 2011 then please pass your details on to me off-list. I will then compile a list of potentials for the NZNOG trustees to make their final selection from. I won't be part of the NZNOG 2011 org team so we've definitely looking for some new blood this time around. If you have any particular roles that you think you could do well then please include those in your email. To give you some ideas we definitely need some people who can take care of: -Bags and shirts (including collecting sponsors logos) -Budgeting and overseeing the NZNOG financials -Looking after all of our sponsors Next, we also need to decide on a venue and location for NZNOG 2011. So, if you think you'd like to host a NZNOG or know someone that would then please let me know. We've only been to the South Island once so far so another trip down there would be fun! It is currently available to participants in their Google over IPv6 program, http://www.google.com/intl/en/ipv6/ . The www.youtube.com user interface so far does *not* have any AAAA published, but the *much* more important (traffic wise) image and video servers do. Use tcpdump to verify. Eg., anticimex(a)hsa:~$ host s.ytimg.com s.ytimg.com is an alias for static.cache.l.google.com. static.cache.l.google.com has address 74.125.13.213 static.cache.l.google.com has IPv6 address 2001:4860:4001:402::15 anticimex(a)hsa:~$ host v1.lscache1.c.youtube.com v1.lscache1.c.youtube.com is an alias for v1.lscache1.l.google.com. v1.lscache1.l.google.com has address 74.125.97.80 v1.lscache1.l.google.com has IPv6 address 2001:4860:4001:402::10 The time when it began is clearly visible in our own IPv6 graphs, http://stats.csbnet.se/public/ipv6/csbnet-ipv6-traffictypes.html , and you can see similar correlated data at for example http://www.de-cix.net/content/network.html . To figure out all the mappings they give you, if you want to trace etc, something similar to: "for i in `seq 1 24 `; do for y in `seq 1 8 `; do host v$i.lscache$y.c.youtube.com ; done ; done | grep 'IPv6 address' | cut -d' ' -f 1,5 | sort -uk2" could be used - at least from where I sit. Adjust for correctness. I'm sure that as this matures and bugs are wiped out, there will no longer be any need for the Google over IPv6 program and everybody will be able to access this. Although the submissions are confidential, many potential participants have gone public with at least some information. The published terms of the project expressly forbid a telco from participating if it has both retail and wholesale operations - effectively ruling out Telecom NZ while it retains control of its Chorus access network division. This has triggered speculation the company is considering divesting itself of the business - even though there have been repeated assurances this is not in prospect. One of the two proposals involves building on the company's existing fibre-to-the-node as a springboard for fibre-to-the-home. Telecom's two bids are a function of the submission process where bidders offering a non-compliant bid must also submit a compliant bid and explain why non-compliance is preferable. In its bid, Auckland-based lines company Vector has gone for speed promising to deliver ultra-fast broadband to the premises across the city in seven years - beating the government's target by three years. The submission says its compliant bid means fibre will pass 133,000 premises within two years and connect more than half of all businesses within four years. Like Telecom NZ, Vector's public statements make much of its ability to "leverage existing assets". Vector is a member of The New Zealand Regional Fibre Group (NZRFG) which says a number of other members have submitted proposals. The NZRFG said it is "Developing a proposal which could provide a dramatic step-change through the creation of an open access, national layer 2 (or lit) fibre network". NZRFG members have submitted consortium bids for the Waikato and the Otago and Southland regions. Northpower submitted a bid for the Northland region. I hand-waved the question about DNSSEC and DNS64 in my talk just now. The full answer is in http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-behave-dns64 Extracting the main bits: (section 5.5) 1. If CD is not set and DO is not set, vDNS64 SHOULD perform validation and do synthesis as needed. 2. If CD is not set and DO is set, then vDNS64 SHOULD perform validation. Whenever vDNS64 performs validation, it MUST validate the negative answer for AAAA queries before proceeding to query for A records for the same name, in order to be sure that there is not a legitimate AAAA record on the Internet. Failing to observe this step would allow an attacker to use DNS64 as a mechanism to circumvent DNSSEC. If the negative response validates, and the response to the A query validates, then the vDNS64 MAY perform synthesis and SHOULD set the AD bit in the answer to the client. 3. If the CD bit is set and DO is set, then vDNS64 MAY perform validation, but MUST NOT perform synthesis. It MUST hand the data back to the query initiator, just like a regular recursive resolver, and depend on the client to do the validation and the synthesis itself. The disadvantage to this approach is that an end point that is translation-oblivious but security-aware and validating will not be able to use the DNS64 functionality. In this case, the end point will not have the desired benefit of NAT64. In effect, this strategy means that any end point that wishes to do validation in a NAT64 context must be upgraded to be translation- aware as well. ... (section 6.2) Existing DNSSEC validators (i.e. that are unaware of DNS64) will reject all the data that comes from the DNS64 as having been tampered with. If it is necessary to have validation behind the DNS64, then the validator must know how to perform the DNS64 function itself. HI to those heading for NZNOG in Hamilton, For those of you looking for where to eat (but no local handy to ask), here's a few suggestions: http://auckland.thursdaynightcurry.com/index.cgi/Hamilton Feel free to update with your own suggestions. Curry on Wed: Normally I'd offer to organise a curry dinner on Wed evening. Unfortunately can't do it as we'll be going to a family birthday dinner tomorrow evening (in Hamilton). The venue for last nznog curry in Hamilton (New Delhi, 15 Hood St) is no longer there. From what I could find, there's another New Delhi in Dinsdale, Hamilton. Unless the locals have better suggestions for Wed night curry (if there's to be a curry dinner on Wed), Little India or Jaipur Walla seems to be the two "safe" options. I think I've eaten at Little India in Hamilton (but not recently). Never been to Jaipur Walla. regards lin
