Curry on Wed: Normally I'd offer to organise a curry dinner on Wed evening. Unfortunately can't do it as we'll be going to a family birthday dinner tomorrow evening (in Hamilton). The venue for last nznog curry in Hamilton (New Delhi, 15 Hood St) is no longer there. From what I could find, there's another New Delhi in Dinsdale, Hamilton. Unless the locals have better suggestions for Wed night curry (if there's to be a curry dinner on Wed), Little India or Jaipur Walla seems to be the two "safe" options. I think I've eaten at Little India in Hamilton (but not recently). Aussies in town

Hey all, The aussies from eintellego are in town and are looking to celebrate Australian Day! We have a massive hotel room with bbq facilities and full kitchen and so on... So we're thinking of heading over to the butcher and getting some meat, throwing the bbq on and kicking back to the pile of duty free booze that your country insists we purchase lots of upon arrival ;-) We could probably do up to about 20-30 easily - yes, it's a weirdly massive room with balcony for bbq! HI folks I am trying to spot compromised (or just 'shared') accounts by looking at where logins are coming from. I am doing this by using the free city data base from www.maxmind.com. This year we're doing something slightly different - our 3 day routing workshop from Monday to Wednesday. _______________________________________________________________________ Less than 10% of IPv4 Addresses Remain Unallocated, says Number Resource Organization _______________________________________________________________________ Hi NZNOG Community, Deploying IPv6 - the next generation of the Internet Protocol - is vital to the continued development of the Internet AMSTERDAM - The Number Resource Organization (NRO), the official representative of the five Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) that oversee the allocation of all Internet number resources, announced today that less than 10 percent of available IPv4 addresses remain unallocated. This small pool of existing IP addresses marks a critical moment in IPv4 address exhaustion, ultimately impacting the future network operations of all businesses and organizations around the globe. "This is a key milestone in the growth and development of the global Internet," noted Axel Pawlik, Chairman of the NRO. "With less than 10 percent of the entire IPv4 address range still available for allocation to RIRs, it is vital that the Internet community take considered and determined action to ensure the global adoption of IPv6. The limited IPv4 addresses will not allow us enough resources to achieve the ambitions we all hold for global Internet access. The deployment of IPv6 is a key infrastructure development that will enable the network to support the billions of people and devices that will connect in the coming years," added Pawlik. Internet Protocol is a set of technical rules that defines how devices communicate over a network. There are currently two versions of IP, IPv4 and IPv6. IPv6 includes a modern numbering system that provides a much larger address pool than IPv4. With so few IPv4 addresses remaining, the NRO is urging all Internet stakeholders to take immediate action by planning for the necessary investments required to deploy IPv6. The NRO, alongside each individual RIR, has actively promoted IPv6 deployment for several years through grassroots outreach, speaking engagements, conferences and media outreach. To date, their combined efforts have yielded positive results in the call to action for the adoption of IPv6. Given the less than 10 percent milestone, the NRO is continuing its call for Internet stakeholders, including governments, vendors, enterprises, telecoms operators, and end users, to fulfill their roles in IPv6 adoption, specifically encouraging the following actions: The business sector should provide IPv6-capable services and platforms, including web hosting and equipment, ensuring accessibility for IPv6 users. Software and hardware vendors should implement IPv6 support in their products to guarantee they are available at production standard when needed. Governments should lead the way by making their own content and services available over IPv6 and encouraging IPv6 deployment efforts in their countries. IPv6 requirements in government procurement policies are critical at this time. Civil society, including organizations and end users, should request that all services they receive from their ISPs and vendors are IPv6-ready, to build demand and ensure competitive availability of IPv6 services in coming years. The NRO's campaign to promote the next generation of Internet Protocol continues to positively impact the Internet community. IPv6 allocations increased by nearly 30% in 2009, as community members continued to recognize the benefits of IPv6. "Many decision makers don't realize how many devices require IP addresses - mobile phones, laptops, servers, routers, the list goes on," said Raul Echeberria, Secretary of the NRO. "The number of available IPv4 addresses is shrinking rapidly, and if the global Internet community fails to recognize this, it will face grave consequences in the very near future. As such, the NRO is working to educate everyone, from network operators to top executives and government representatives, about the importance of IPv6 adoption," added Echeberria. IP addresses are allocated by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), a contract operated by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). IANA distributes IP addresses to RIRs, who in turn issue them to users in their respective regions. "This is the time for the Internet community to act," said Rod Beckstrom, ICANN's President and Chief Executive Officer. Consultation on New Zealand Web Harvest 2010

Good afternoon everyone. The National Library of New Zealand is planning a second New Zealand Web Harvest in April 2010. We received a lot of feedback from NZNOG (and others) during and after New Zealand Web Harvest 2008. Following that harvest, Dean helped arrange up a meeting of interested stakeholders at the Library to discuss the various issues that were raised, and reported back to the list here: http://list.waikato.ac.nz/pipermail/nznog/2008-November/014763.html You may also recall that I spoke at the 2009 NZNOG conference about our experience with the first harvest. I will speak at the 2010 conference out our plans for the second. During the 2008 Web Harvest, members of the New Zealand internet community raised several concerns, specifically relating to: -- the notification period -- the robots policy -- the location of the harvester. For the 2010 harvest we have developed an Options Paper, detailing approaches the Library could take to address these concerns. We are circulating this Options Paper to stakeholder groups in the networking and technical communities. The feedback we receive will be built into the planning of the harvest, its public notification, and its operation. Please note that the options paper is NOT a general notification of the 2010 harvest. We will notify the wider New Zealand internet community closer to the date of the harvest when more details are known. Upcoming APNIC policy implementations

Hi NZNOG Community, On 10 February 2009, APNIC will implement three policy proposals that reached consensus during APNIC 28 in Beijing, China in August 2009. The APNIC Executive Council (EC) endorsed the proposals during their November 2009 meeting. The three policy changes are: - Removing policy restrictions on the transfer of registration of IPv4 address allocations and IPv4 portable address assignments between current APNIC account holders. This change aims to ensure that the APNIC registry reflects the true status of IPv4 resource holdings, reducing risks to the routing and addressing infrastructure integrity of the network and providing a stronger incentive for unused IPv4 address space to return to active use during the IPv6 transition. - Providing alternative simplified criteria that allows a Member with existing IPv4 space to qualify for an appropriately sized IPv6 block under the matching IPv6 policy and request that IPv6 block through a simple online form. This change aims to encourage greater uptake of IPv6 addresses amongst APNIC Members who have IPv4 space. - Adding the ability to recover unused historical AS numbers for eventual reassignment to other APNIC account holders. This change aims to release unused AS numbers back into the unassigned pool. Hi all, For the last 6 months the members of the Dragon Research Group (associated with Team Cymru https://drg.team-cymru.org/about.html) have been busy working away. We have just announced what all that work has produced. Dean ----- The Dragon Research Group (DRG) would like to announce a new tool called the DRG Distro. This new tool is at the heart of the DRG Network which provides actionable intelligence. The Dragon Research Group (DRG) Distro is a Linux-based Live CD platform. It forms the cornerstone of much of DRG's ongoing research, analysis and development efforts. The goal of the DRG Distro is to build a DRG Network of pods that can securely and anonymously help provide actionable intelligence to the Internet security community. The DRG Distro can act as a passive data collection facility for many common applications such as HTTP servers or if expressly permitted, can help actively monitor malicious Internet activity. It also includes a number of tools that when combined with the DRG Network help provide real-time, usable intelligence to the local pod partner. The entire DRG Network is designed to provide real-time actionable intelligence in the form of statistics, graphs, threat feeds and DRG Distro tool sets that will benefit the entire Internet security community. No pod partner or pod specific information is ever shared outside the core DRG team by DRG. The DRG seeks trustworthy and reliable pod partners to help build and support the growing DRG Network. All pod partners are screened by DRG to help ensure the integrity of the DRG Network. Pod runners will have some advantages over the general public. They will have full insight into their own pods and their feedback will help determine the future direction of the DRG Distro and DRG Network. The Executive Council represents the APNIC Membership and acts in the best interests of the organization. The Members whose positions are up for re-election are: - Akinori Maemura - Che-Hoo Cheng - Ma Yan These three Members were all elected at APNIC 25 in Taipei, Taiwan on Friday, 29 February 2008. Nominations are due by the close of business on Wednesday, 17 February 2010 at the latest (17:30 UTC 10, Brisbane time). Nominees do not have to be representatives of APNIC Members, but only APNIC Members may nominate and vote for candidates. Unbundled exchanges and areas

Hello, Does anyone have a public map showing how much of New Zealand has been unbundled, how many Exchanges have been done, and the speeds customers are getting on unbundled exchanges... And I guess, in a given area, what ISP's are there.... After all the 'hype' of a blond CEO of a certain ISP (Any one remember the Bread stunt) about how they are going to provide New Zealanders with quicker faster cheaper Internet, I have seen no evidence of this - the cost has not dropped between an unbundled exchange and a non unbundled exchange. Last I heard in the news, less than a handfull of Auckland suburbs had been done, And I live in one of them which is good, but if I want to move, I would like to move to one that is unbundled still. The News Media has moved on to the next 'buzz word' and I guess that is what some companies were hoping for.. As LLU is now out of the public eye, and almost forgotten about. Just thought I would ask here, as I cant seem to find anything online.

Telco Rack Linux Server

Hi Folks, Anyone out there using commercial, off the shelf linux servers that happen to mount in a telco rack? Ideal would be something along the lines of 3U high and 400mm deep. 50V DC would be ideal but that's probably dreaming. I'm not too fussed about architecture but I do want something supported by a real vendor that I'm likely to be able to continue buying on a regular basis. There was only a couple of roadcases of gear in the room, honest. However, last time I did forget the golden rule about always carrying your room key, especially when going to the loo in the middle of the night.

The talks were shot to tape, which need to be captured, edited, transcoded and finally a big web page to cover it all. Theres 30 videos covering over 24 hours (something like 20 GB of server space). I have decided that its the video you all want, so haven't made any MP3s this time. Beat me up if you want MP3s. The video is available for both streaming (2 formats) and download (1 format). Theres a flash player and windows player option. And if you ever wondered if you can have 30 embedded players in a web page - the answer is yes - they all work at the same time. If your network and CPU can handle it. Don't watch them all at once..... and let me know if you find any issues. I haven't watched them all the way thru. We just processed them. Hmmmm.. is this a good thing? I realise that few people go back for more ASN's after their initial one, but we are requesting them regularly for customers. What is the situation with carriers accepting them. Hello Team, Shadowserver has new Conficker reports. This was instigated by internal Conficker Working Group dialog. We are now set up to really see if remediation is effective. As you can see in the data, Conficker is still growing (A & B). Public DNS Servers and CDN

All, With the recent announcement of Google's public DNS servers, I am worried about operators of CDN who may rely on DNS queries for geo-location (Akamai comes to mind). Today it is reasonable to assume DNS queries from ISP1's name servers (or address block in general) are probably from a client within the ISP1 network. With public DNS servers it gets a whole pile harder. A issue I saw first hand is when I had statically set my DNS resolvers to ISP1 servers and then changed to ISP2. For many months everything went okay but then one day iTunes stopped working. It was not that ISP2 was blocking access to their DNS resolvers, but that the Akamai cluster that queries to the ISP2 resolvers was not advertised into the ISP1 network (rightly or wrongly). More importantly, ISP1 had Akamai servers of their own which I had been bypassing. I think this is something for the community to carefully consider, especially given how CDN like Akamai can dramatically reduce traffic across peering links for a number of NZ ISP. I'm not trying to condone the idea of public DNS servers or comment on the motivation behind Google and others operating them, but just focus on the impacts. Does any one else see a cause for concern? -David M
