Dear Colleague, This is to notify you that one or more objects in which you are designated for notification have been modified in the NZRR routing registry database. These objects are used to configure the various NZIX route servers (http://nzix.net/) so you can expect the relevant servers to be reloaded in the near future. The reloading of the servers is staggered over a period of time so that if you are peering with both servers at an exchange, you can maintain at least one BGP session at all times and consequently a full set of routes. In Today's issue of Commsday International - July 10 2009, Page 2 and 3 sidebar IP ADDRESSES ARE NOT PERSONAL OR PRIVATE A US federal judge has ruled IP addresses do not constitute personal information, establishing a legal precedent that could radically alter Internet privacy norms. Presiding over a class action lawsuit against Microsoft, US District Court judge Richard Jones defended the company's collection of customers' IP addresses during software updates as fair and reasonable despite a user agreement promising not to hoover up identifying data. "In order for 'personally identifiable information' to be personally identifiable, it must identify a person. But an IP address identifies a computer," Jones wrote in a dismissal. The ruling underlines the lack of federal guidance on the issue, with US courts handing out a series of contradictory decisions piecemeal over the last few years. Just last month a New Jersey court determined surfers had a reasonable right to assume their IP addresses would be kept private and barred ISPs from disclosing them to third parties without a subpoena. Call for Presentations - AusNOG-03 --------------------------------- AusNOG-03 is to be held in Sydney, Australia between 31st August and 1st of September 2009 The AusNOG meeting provides the Australian community with a forum to exchange information and experiences on a number of issues relating to the operation and support of networks, with a specific focus on the coming 6-12 months. The conference is expected to have a strong technical representation from companies operating networks in Australia. Send your proposed topics and details to organisers(a)ausnog.net. Please include a detailed overview including the expected length and technical depth of your presentation. The program committee will confirm your application and may get back to you with any questions. CCIP Alerts on NZNOG

Good Morning All, 1. Thank you for the feedback everyone. There have been a number of requests how to subscribe to CCIP's mailing lists, if you send an email to CCIP Publications <publications(a)ccip.govt.nz> with the subject of "Subscribe" then we will add you to our lists, which are relatively low volume one-two posts per month. If you have a security incident you would like to report it or you are aware of something that you think CCIP should be aware of then please send an email to CCIP Incident Response <incidents(a)ccip.govt.nz> When it comes to security related issues I always say that "I would rather hear about something three times than not at all!" 2. CCIP are not currently not preparing regular summaries of activity but it is something we will consider implementing. 3. Currently the volume of CCIP Alerts is about four a year, so posting those here sounds like it would be appropriate and we will review that if the volume starts increasing significantly. Again the threshold for issuing an alert is when there is active exploitation of a new or unpatched vulnerability. CCIP's current philosophy is that we would rather issues alerts and advisories less frequently but have people listen to us when we do, versus just being another noisy feed that becomes somewhat ignored. We definitely don't want to be considered as another "Chicken Little", but sometimes we have to err on the side of caution. When it comes to security I always say that "I would rather hear about something three times than not at all!" 4. This is a dynamic field we work in and we are constantly reviewing what we do, and how we do it. We are always open to feedback and suggestions either on list or off list. 5. Thanks for reading. NZ Contacts for Integration/Network Work

Hey all, I met a lot of you awesome guys at the last NZNOG and there is a pile of you that I would love to work with more, but in that wide jigsaw piece country of yours, I have no idea where you all are. We've got a lot of proposed projects on at the moment and NZ is featuring heavily in most of them, so I want to get a bunch of people on a list who we can use in different cities for different kinds of work. Work can involve site visits to install DSL services, onsite basic Cisco work, IPv6 work, general IT (fix server, pc, etc), and some consulting perhaps. We're dealing with a lot of large retail, and hotel chains which have networks throughout NZ as well, which is where some of the above work types slot into. I am not fabulous with NZ geography, so I would need someone to help with a list of the key cities, regional cities that might have those massive malls that always seem to have most of the 'common' chains. I prefer small businesses who are reliable, can be well presented, professional and know their towns well, as I will also need local advice on connectivity solutions - fibre, MetroE, wireless and so on in your particular area. There may be possible emergency work for problems, so I need to know your availability, and also your rates. 802.11 Wireless plotting per AP

Hey Guys, I know this may be a little off topic, however I know there are many wireless operators on list. I'm wondering what you use to track wireless signal from a base station to see what the footprint is. I.e. I would like to drive around down all the streets where this hotspot is located to plot a map of what signal strength is like in this location for a specific AP, I will circle the streets around the AP until I've lost all signal and hope to have some sort of map to work with :) Any help offlist would be appreciated. Hi, I've got a request from TUANZ regarding who (if anyone) receives 'Education notices' for their networks. If anyone is able to answer the following questions off list it would be appreciated: - Does your system administrator currently receive regular notices form rights holders alleging breach of copyright? - If so, are you able to estimate how many? - What do you currently do with them - determine and follow up with the staff member apparently implicated, or bin them? - If the Act results in a major increase in the number of such notices (say tenfold) and you are required to pass them through and disconnect after 3 allegations, how big an imposition and cost is this? - Do you anticipate difficulties arising with your staff/users as a result? I'm sure someone will regard this as commercial so apologies to those people already, but this is to exciting to not tell everyone. As of 12.2(50)SE Cisco have now moved basic IPv6 support on the following switches into the base image: 3750-E 3560-E 3750 3560 This reduces the cost of moving to IPv6 substantially, as previsouly you had to buy the very expensive "Advanced IP" image. With resolution 2009-02-03-04, the ICANN Board asked the Root Server System Advisory Committee (RSSAC), the Security and Stability Advisory Committee (SSAC), and the ICANN staff to study the potential impact on the root zone stability that might arise when IPv6 address records, IDN top level names, other new TLDs, and new records to support DNS security are added to the root zone. The Board has expressed interest in hearing of the impact of the distinct changes, but also their aggregate effect on root zone operations. The Board also asks that the study address the technical and operational concerns regarding expanding the DNS root zone that have been expressed on this topic. A study team has been assembled and is composed of the following: Jaap Akkerhuis Lyman Chapin - Chair Patrik FC$ltstrC6m Glenn Kowack Lars-Johan Liman Bill Manning The goal of the study is to construct a complete, definitive, and authoritative model of the root server system (including all of its provisioning and query components) that shows how the different parts are related, and how changing the value of a variable in one part would affect each of the other parts. It will be as quantitative a model as possible given the relatively short time frame of the study. The idea is not to try to identify all of the bad things that might happen if (for example) the number of TLDs in the root zone were to increase by several orders of magnitude during the same time period in which new RRs were added for DNSSEC (b^@^\how many entries in the root zone is too many?b^@^]), but to construct a model that demonstrates what the effects would be throughout the system of changing the value of one or more variables either individually or in combination (e.g., the rate at which new TLDs are added to the root, or the frequency of key rollover events in a signed root). This model will provide an unbiased factual and analyticalb^@^Trather than anecdotalb^@^Tbasis for recognizing and evaluating concerns about root server system security and stability as the root grows. As a tool for policy makers, it will show the expected impact on the root server system of policy decisions that would change various root zone parameters. The study team has a couple of methods for collecting inputs and encourages interested parties to provide the study team with their concerns. The New Zealand Network Operators' Group The NZNOG mailing list exists to facilitate discussion among operators of networks in New Zealand on matters relevant to network operators as described in the list's Acceptable Use Policy. That policy appears later in this posting. The NZNOG Trust exists to provide the legal framework needed to do jobs like operating the bank account which holds the money which allows our annual conferences to happen. Hi NZNOG Community, _______________________________________________________________________ ISIF Grant Program Invites Applicants _______________________________________________________________________ Applications for the Information Society Innovation Fund (ISIF) 2010 grant round are now open. Launched in 2008, the ISIF grant program aims to stimulate creative solutions to ICT development needs in the Asia Pacific region. The program provides grants of up to AUD 40,000 per project that help advance local and regional initiatives that introduce, improve, and apply Internet and other digital communications technologies for the benefit of Asia-Pacific users and communities. This year’s round of funding will benefit about 8 to 10 projects. ISIF is a joint initiative between the Canadian International Development Research Centre (IDRC), the Internet Society (ISOC), and the Asia Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC). It is proudly sponsored by the DotAsia Organization, the registry operator for the .ASIA top-level domain. The overwhelming success of the first round of applications reflects the importance of technological innovation in today's challenging market circumstances, especially for developing economies. Karen Rose, ISOC Director of Education and Programmes stated: "We received many strong proposals from a diverse pool of applicants in the inaugural year of the ISIF program. We hope to have similar success this year, and strongly encourage new applicants to submit proposals for ISIF funding, as well as revised submissions from applicants that were unsuccessful last year." Project proposals from Asia Pacific-based public or private sector organizations, university, or research and development institutions and non-government organizations will be considered. Applications must be aligned with ISIF program objectives, selection criteria, and administrative guidelines. For example, project results must be shared as stated in the ISIF copyright and license scheme. Individuals are not eligible for grants. "The ISIF grants program is a great opportunity for innovation in the Asia Pacific. We hope that with the global Internet community facing the prospect of IPv4 depletion in the next few years, some 2010 grant applications will feature projects that assist the adoption of IPv6 in the region," said Paul Wilson, Director General of APNIC. Applications for the 2010 grant round closes on 31 July 2009. Grants will be made on a competitive basis and successful applicants will be required to make project details, outcomes, and findings publicly available. I'm building a wiki for FSF's End Software Patents campaign, and I'd like to gather info to assist anti-swpat campaigns in NZ: http://en.swpat.org/ http://en.swpat.org/wiki/New_Zealand But, I'm living in Europe, so someone recommended this group as a starting point. I know it's a tech list, but maybe I can find the sort of people who are concerned about tech policy.
