CCIP ALERT: Exploitation of MS08-067

Good Afternoon, For those of you who are not already aware, CCIP would like to bring your attention the the Critical Microsoft Security Bulletin MS08-067 that was released today: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS08-067.mspx Microsoft have announced a vulnerability in the Server Service that could allow remote code execution. Administrators are advised to patch immediately. Microsoft have reported limited, targeted attacks attempting to exploit the vulnerability. CCIP has been made aware of two exploits that have been developed so far for this vulnerability since its release this morning. CCIP is concerned that a worm may be developed that would utilise these exploits. Hi All, This was news to me ('till international traffic on some of my sites began to climb); The National Library is this month ripping the entire NZ Internet ..... from an international host ..... blatantly ignoring robots.txt http://www.natlib.govt.nz/about-us/current-initiatives/web-harvest-2008 International traffic in NZ often costs end customers real money (especially in colo situations). A site I'm involved with, entirely NZ oriented content, served up 2GB to these guys in one day (that's half a normal month of international). Nevermind the sovereignty question; presumably the goal is that by the end of Oct the entire NZ Internet will be mirrored at nlnzdata000.us.archive.org :-/ Anyone else raging about this? Ignoring the robots.txt issue, why couldn't this have been done over national links? Or damn, at the very least they could have pinged off an email to webmaster(a)target.co.nz ahead of ripping the site to let admins get prepared? M.

These objects are used to configure the various NZIX route servers (http://nzix.net/) so you can expect the relevant servers to be reloaded in the near future. The reloading of the servers is staggered over a period of time so that if you are peering with both servers at an exchange, you can maintain at least one BGP session at all times and consequently a full set of routes. Dynamic/Static allocations for DSL

G'day, I'm about to switch ADSL providers, and that caused me to stop and think about dynamic/static IP addresses and ADSL. Mainly because I'll have an always on connection[0], yet I'll still have a dynamic address, or I need to pay $10/month for a static IPv4. It has been suggested to me that one of the reasons that DSL connections in NZ tend to have dynamic addresses is due to an APNIC policy. Can anyone here point me towards it? The best I've found is a slide deck from their Internet Resource Management course[1] which says that dynamic addressing is encouraged, but I haven't found any policy documents to back that up. It fact it seems that APNIC policy is opposite to that. The assumption in the APNIC IPv4 Guidelines[2] is that DSL connections are permanent 'net connections and therefore are normally assigned static IPs. And yes, I am using dynamic DNS at the moment. It looks like I will continue to do so, but it'd be nicer to have a static IPv4 address. It seems crazy to have to pay for the benefit of an allocated IPv4 address when I'll always be using one anyhow. Cheers! Hello NZNog, We (Vocus) are just in the final stages of getting approval to build our Vocus POP into Auckland. One of the questions asked by our board was if there was interest in a native IPv6 service delivered at Sky Tower. Submarine cable exposed by erosion on Murawai Beach

Hi all, while doing a bit of off roading at Murawai Yesterday, I came across this exposed submarine cable. It could be one of the older Pacrim or Tasman cables but I suspect it may be the Southern Cross Western cable. I would hope the appropriate people might be on this list to recognize the cable and initiate remedy action as the cable is in a very public and exposed position. http://tonyw.com/cable-2.htm There are some Telecom cable warning signs further back in line with the cable, and next stop from Murawai in the direction the cable is going is Australia. Auckland datacenters

Hi all. I'm looking for somewhere to put servers and stuff in Auckland. Central is better, but I'm open to alternatives. I've talked to a few places, but they are adverse to more than 10A per rack and other silly things. Attempting to work through it, but.. yeah. Any recommendations (offlist) would be nice. If desired, I can summarise back to the list. I'm more interested in neutral places than anywhere run by an ISP, mainly because I don't want to have to move gear, or be treated like a lower class citizen if I move away from their transit. Not saying it would happen, but independence is healthy. The possibility for caged space is also nice. There's one or two obvious places, but bear in mind that I'm thinking about 5 racks immediately, maybe 10 within 12 months, maybe more. The obvious places aren't big enough. Alternatively, if anyone has a need for something like this then let me know and we can collaborate. -- Nathan Ward

UPS information

Hey Noggers, We're in a position where we're going to require a UPS at one of our pop's, and being that i've personally never actually had to buy/provision any UPS gear before, i thought i'd put the question out there, what UPS gear have people here in NZ generally found to be pretty good? is the cost of these units going to bite me hard? is there anyone specialized that should perhaps talk to? Hi NZNOG Community, ________________________________________________________________________ IPv6 Penetration Survey final reminder ________________________________________________________________________ Almost seven hundred organizations have responded thus far to the IPv6 Penetration Survey. Sponsored by ARIN, in cooperation with the Cooperative Association for Internet Data Analysis (CAIDA), this survey is gathering data regarding current and future use of IPv6 around the world. We cordially invite and encourage all organizations in the AfriNIC, APNIC, ARIN, LACNIC, and RIPE NCC regions to participate in the survey so we can establish a comprehensive view of present IPv6 penetration and future plans for IPv6 deployment. The survey opened on 8 September and remains available until 17:00 EDT on 1 October 2008. The results of the survey will be presented and discussed at the ARIN XXII Public Policy and Members Meeting to be held in Los Angeles, CA 15-17 October 2008. Additionally, the summary results will be shared with all the RIRs for further distribution within their respective regions. The survey data will support ongoing research. The survey is composed of 22 questions that can be answered in a few minutes. This is a secure survey, and all data will be presented in summary form only and kept confidential between ARIN and CAIDA. CISCO Advise sought.

Hello, We are having some issues with our very basic Cisco configuration, that we cant seem to track down. (Random disconnections to only one host) I am not sure if this is the right forum, so if you believe it's not please stop reading. If you notice something obviously wrong with the config snippet at the bottom, please advise, and a beer is on offer. If you need more information than what was is provided below, and you would be keen to give up some of your valuable time for beer, please contact me off list. If you are still reading then you clearly do think this might be an appropriate place for questions of this nature, here goes the config snippet. All comments off list. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Currently we have the following: ip nat pool ST_NAT_POOL 192.168.202.74 192.168.202.74 prefix-length 24 ip nat inside source route-map ST_NAT_MAP pool ST_NAT_POOL overload access-list 164 remark Some Telco (NAT) access-list 164 permit ip 192.168.254.0 0.0.0.255 1.2.3.0 0.0.0.255 access-list 164 permit ip 123.12.123.0 0.0.0.224 1.2.3.0 0.0.0.255 route-map ST_NAT_MAP permit 100 match ip address 164 We do some NAT on packets heading to some telco that go out our default route, and our ISP does some magic.. more info if needed. We had the following line in and the problem was still there however Cisco said it was bad, so we removed it and replaced it with the above explicit hosts, but the problem still appears. access-list 164 permit ip any 1.2.3.0 0.0.255 Basically we get random disconnections, but only to this Some Telco we have other connections to other telco's that are OK, these are natted, but are talking direct to a public IP, or are VPN'ed. This configuration is on a replacement Cisco, the old Cisco, with a very similar config, works fine, but has other issues which is why we need to replace it. Thanks and any comments please off list.

I would strongly suggest it.. as it appears that most people seem to have an advertise all, accept none policy in regards to the route servers. Sell me your unused outbound capacity.

Sorry for this post, but it's a request that few sales droids understand, this seems to be the only way to get it to all the people in-country who do understand this without having to call you all up individually. My current colocation provider have consistently demonstrated their inability to provide service to the CIR that I pay for, so I'm looking around at alternative options. If you are a provider with lots of megabits of traffic that is predominantly inbound (ie. you have lots of customers on ADSL tails or whatever), you have lots of outbound capacity that you're paying for but not selling. Sell it to me, cheaper than your sales droids would normally sell a symmetric circuit for, because I'm the opposite of you - I push significantly more traffic than I than pull - and I don't want to buy bits I don't use either. I'm interested in both international and domestic capacity, for web hosting and media streaming (no, not for P2P or anything like that). IPv6 is a bonus. Also, anyone else who has a similar need for outbound capacity for this sort of thing give me a yell, it might be worthwhile hooking up. All responses off-list please, including flames. Um, beer for anyone who hooks me up with someone I eventually buy from. Phew. Beer flowing in the same direction as the money, *and* a preference for IPv6 service?
