Dear Colleague, This is to notify you that one or more objects in which you are designated for notification have been modified in the NZRR routing registry database. These objects are used to configure the various NZIX route servers (http://nzix.net/) so you can expect the relevant servers to be reloaded in the near future. The reloading of the servers is staggered over a period of time so that if you are peering with both servers at an exchange, you can maintain at least one BGP session at all times and consequently a full set of routes. Do you feel like a second class Internet citizen?

Hi all, apologies for cross-posting. With the recent launch of FYX and their "Global Mode" it's made me think about a number of points. I'd like to get your view on them, there are questions at the end so lets get started. Now I know that not all marketing is to be believed, but lets have a look at some of the recent statements made by FYX: "We need to say very specifically that we are providing a service that gives much greater access to the internet." http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=138&topicid=101761&page_no=1#6… "We have enabled a technology we like to call "Global Mode" which creates freedom for New Zealand internet users that doesn't exist elsewhere." "So we decided to FYX the internet by removing some of the barriers that were getting in the way of great choice." "... we just do our hardest to give you the access and freedom that you deserve. Ultimately, we are about access and openness for Kiwi's." http://www.fyx.co.nz/what-is-fyx.html So with my InternetNZ IP technical policy hat on, it got me thinking... Are people using a "New Zealand IP Address"[1] to access the internet having their freedom impacted by not being treated the same as someone using a "US IP Address"[2] ? Has Internet Citizenship got anything to do with where you are physically located any more? Or does it purely come down to where a content provider believes your IP address is originating from? If that's the case then there will be times when having an IP address from a certain country is an advantage, as well as a liability. Just like different passports really. FYX would have us believe that they are providing their users greater access to the Internet and allowing Kiwi's [sic] to enjoy the freedom of a better internet experience. So here are my questions for people. 1) Is this claimed lack of freedom something real? Do New Zealanders feel that they are being somehow restricted by having their internet traffic originate from a "New Zealand IP Address" 2) If it is real, given that one of InternetNZs objectives is "To promote easily available access to the Internet for New Zealanders". Is there anything that InternetNZ could be doing at a policy/advocacy level to address this restriction on freedom. 3) Again, if it is real, do you think that just having FYX offering this service will encourage other providers to follow suit, and therefore solve the problem? Nah - it would work with anything which did a DNS request. It would just depend on what sort of proxy system they have deployed. The implication is that they somewhere have a list of services which they will Globalify (there's a new word for you) and allow the rest to carry on directly. They're presently hosted in the US, but want to come on-shore because they're getting serious capacity constraints trying to serve a local audience from a foreign server. I've suggested that they want the usual suspects for hosing quality (APE connectivity since Auckland is their primary audience, a VPS rather than shared hosting, ideally a provider that discounts domestic traffic since the lion's share of their audience is within NZ), and they've asked if I have any suggestions. One of the key building blocks of data centers is the network component. Data center networks have received considerable attention in research in recent years with efforts focusing on transforming the existing Ethernet technology to support data center networks. One key missing feature in Ethernet for data center networks is the support of lossless transmission. To address this shortcoming, a comprehensive data traffic management is needed for Ethernet to operate in a data center, and this need has prompted the creation of a number of standards including IEEE 802.1Qbb for priority flow control, IEEE 802.1Qaz for enhanced transmission selection, and also IEEE 802.1Qau for Ethernet congestion management. This talk presents our recent works on data traffic management in data center networks. We first introduce two layer-2 solutions to combat traffic congestion in data center networks. The first solution uses multipathing technique to balance traffic and prevent congestion at local links. When the offered load exceeds the network capacity, our second solution offers controlling of traffic flows based on their priority to avoid network-wide congestion. In layer-3, we introduce multiple congestion points TCP specifically design for data center environment. We show the significant performance benefit when multiple congestion points can be detected in a data path. The talk concludes with sharing of some ongoing works and preliminary results. Short Bio: Chuan Heng Foh (Ph.D, The University of Melbourne, 2002) is an Assistant Professor at the School of Computer Engineering, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) since December 2002. Priority to NTU, he was a lecturer at Monash University for 6 months. Chuan Heng Foh is the author of 90 research papers and 1 patent. Greetings, It may be of interest to someone out there that rack 20-2 on Level 48 of the Sky Tower has an orange flashing light visible through the door and is emitting a beeping sound. The rack has a label on it reading "Mercury Tele". Cheers, Tim
