One interesting bit of NON-history: VUW was offered the opportunity to participate in Alohanet, which would have got us onto the very genesis of the Internet. We needed a satellite link to do this, which the university did not have. Wellington Polytech DID have a suitable dish, but we could not afford the cost of the cross town leased line (among other things).
