I think the inverse is probably true, but we’ll never know.
Google likely had plans to drive around the streets to map
wireless connectivity as a survey, and probably thought ‘stuff it, lets take
pictures while we’re at it’.

How awesome would that be
really?
Most people use software like NetStumbler with a GPS attached.
You can export logs etc and play with some xml files and do what you like.
Andy's comment just popped up then, Wi-Spy with visiwave is an option.

Also Ubiquti's "AirView" products might help you. If you want decent
results get a $700+ spectrum analyser

Perhaps one could strike a deal with Google to map this out

Hey Guys,
I know this may be a little off topic, however I know there are many
wireless operators on list. I'm wondering what you use to track wireless
signal from a base station to see what the footprint is.
I.e. I would like to drive around down all the streets where this hotspot
is located to plot a map of what signal strength is like in this location
for a specific AP, I will circle the streets around the AP until I've lost
all signal and hope to have some sort of map to work with :)
Any help offlist would be appreciated.
Thanks
Barry Murphy
