Hi Wireless guru's (he says hopefully :) In the next month or so I'm in need of a simple Wireless Bridge setup to temporarily Bridge the Ethernet's of two buildings for about 2 days. The distance is under 500 metres, and it must be bridged, not routed. I already have on hand a variety of old and new 802.11b wireless gear (Lucent/Orinoco) so I'd like to use what I have if possible. In particular I've got a couple of Lucent Wavepoint-II access points sitting around spare. The catch is that the normal access point firmware will not bridge between two access points, it will only connect to client stations. The client cards I have are also Lucent (Silver) cards, and those cannot do bridging as a client, as either the driver or firmware (probably the firmware) on the card doesn't allow it. (Believe me, I've tried, unless I've missed some trick :-) So I seem to have a few options: 1) Get the "Remote Outdoor Router" firmware and enabling keys for both access points - this would allow them to bridge two networks, but the cost is high - a bit of searching on the net and the lowest price I could find was around $800 NZ *each*. ~ $1600 for something that is only going to be needed for a couple of days is out of the question. 2) Some trick to be able to bridge with a Silver card being used in a "client" role. (No luck finding anything yet) 3) Abandon the Lucent cards and find some other card whose drivers allow bridging, and set up a linux machine (or linux boot disk) that will bridge between that card and the ethernet. Assuming the brand of card will connect to the Lucent Access point, the access point can do the bridging at the other end. If that wouldn't work, I'd need two of that kind of card and two PC's...(the PC's and the Linux boot disk aren't a problem, I'm pretty fluent in Linux) 4) Something else ? Any suggestions from those a bit more versed in Wireless techniques gratefully received..
