Sorry for replying to my own post, but have you also noticed that the MX servers for xtra now reside in Oz? This will surely increase the international requirements for many providers sending lots of email to @xtra domains.
Perhaps a little off topic, but I'm not sure I like the privacy implications of sending NZ internal email unnecessarily offshore, and presumably outside the jurisdiction of our Privacy Act ...
gmail/hotmail anyone?
I'm well aware (though I accept that others may not be) that those are not NZ companies, and that mail through there is likely to go offshore. It seems reasonable to assume that Xtra is local, for someone of moderate technical knowledge.
Many people run secondary MX records outside of NZ. Many people put their email on to the gmail hosted domain thang. Many people put their email on to the email service provided by international email providers. Xtra shouldn't be allowed to do this because... they're a big well known NZ company? Seems fair. (or maybe we're just playing tall poppies again?) While we're being paranoid about privacy, did you know that ANZ's website (and online banking system) is in Aus, too? -- Nathan Ward
