Whilst I'm not keen to see the list denigrate into a jobs list, I'd note that this list has been used in the past by the list moderators for exactly that. Many other folks have also done it from time to time with no complaint. So the cat is out of the bag so to speak. So, based on the precedent set by the moderators - which seems to be "advertising jobs is ok", the question is now, what sort of jobs are on topic. My take is this: "Jobs involving network operations, advertised by network operators themselves" I think to do anything less would be extremely unfair to Smartlinx and fairly hypocritical of the moderators to decide anything less. jamie On Mon, 2007-05-28 at 17:17 +1200, Justin Cook wrote:
I don't mind seeing recruitment messages, but I quit off the PHPUG mailing list last week because of them. The recruitment attempts were all more or less asking for a seasoned professional and offering to pay a gas station wage. Mentioning the imbalance caused several members to wet their pants and cry foul; saying that we don't want to offend the sweatshop employers who were trolling the list. Ironically the job in question was to build a spambot, and the loudest crybaby was a known google spammer who turned out to have passed along the list details to the spambot employer in the first place. You can see how it gets ugly quick.
I don't think job posts to this list are appropriate. Why not start a separate IT job list?

Is this an appropriate use of the list?
This is a serious question - we have positions come available from time to time and in the past haven't posted here in the belief that it wouldn't be appropriate, so if it is ok we'll add it to our recruitment strategy for technical network team members.
Personally, as an employer, I think it shouldn't be OK as I like introduce my team members to the list and to encourage them to subscribe, and it seems odd to encourage subscription to a list that I know will deliver inducements to leave us.

With all the "please contact me off list" posts and the people that seem to get precious about classifying these posts as "valid mailing list traffic" I'd be guessing that the answer to this question is a resounding "yes !" after all, this is supposed to be a generic contact list right ? and recruitment is simply another way of getting in contact with people that you want to do a job.
I say go hard, this is a great forum for findign new recrits and contacting people that you would normally have to call a helpdesk or something for.
