Tas-2 is still in operation, but it's essentially got a "do not revive" on it. That is, if it gets trawled up, the kraken strikes, or it just stops working for whatever reason, no-one is going to despatch a ship to go and fix it. While it exists, it's worthwhile using it but that's all.
For the curious, can you give any details on its current capacity, has it been through some upgrades over the years?
I don't know much detail. I gather (Wikipedia) it had an operational life of 25 years (built in 1992) but was out of capacity within two years so the 'upgrades' consisted of new cable systems. It's a 560Mbps (PDH, not SDH/SONET) system.
If dean starts pulling on it will no one really notice?
Not unless Dean is a lot stronger than I remember him. ("Dean crush puny cable!") -- Michael Newbery IP Architect Vodafone Fixed NZ TelstraClear. Simple Solutions.
