at the end of my talk someone asked me what routers I would recomend to try this stuff on here, and I sort of dodged the question.
If you can come up with a list of routers available here (meet me later?), I can tell you what I know about each chipset. (I have evaluated dozens of these over the last year...)
In general ath9k based gear is currently best (entirely open wifi driver), with nearly every manufacturer shipping stuff based on that. I see there is a lot of ubnt here, and most of their older products are well supported by openwrt.
I have been running a TPlink TL-WDR1043ND version 1 on OpenWRT for a couple of years or so. It's very cheap, <NZ$100 and basic operations work OK, but I have had problems with the 802.11n wireless. One poor OpenWRT developer has been trying patch after patch for 3+ years. The release Barrier Breaker version still needs a wifi down; wifi every few days. The version 2 has more RAM and a faster CPU and appears to have fewer wireless issues. Also still running (an older version of) OpenWRT on Linksys WRT units. Almost perfect for the wireless bridge job. Not enough RAM/ROM to run a recent version. The big hole with OpenWRT and the like is that they largely have no drivers for DSL interfaces, which forces most people in NZ in to a two box internet connection, a DSL modem/router and second unit for OpenWRT. Don't buy a DSL router and expect to use the DSL interface on it while running OpenWRT. Regards, RH.
