EDNS0 has been in pervasive use for something like 15 years, so it isn't something new or exotic.
also noteworthy to mention is that Bind performing recursive DNS functions will look at whether EDNS0 usage causes problems with individual resolvers, and retry queries without EDNS0 if it suspects it could be a problem.
