IMO there are far too many people in this country wanting to do everything 'cheap' and then whine when it isn't available 24/7. For example: relying on an email address such as me(a)somebigisp.co.nz for their business which supposedly can't survive if the email goes down for a day. These people should be considering a service where they get their own domain name and email hosting such that they can move it all if they have problems with their provider (which is less likely if they pay more for the service in the first place). Lets face it - if your email is that important to your business then why wouldn't you pay a little more for the reliability of delivery?
I wholeheartedly agree. I think Xtra should have just told the customers "Tough, pay for a business service for business-level reliability", but PR takes over. I also think that it's foolish to reply on email for critical business activities, just as most companies won't rely on standard post for anything time critical, as the nature of the protocol means you might not know about a failed delivery for days. Getting a new protocol running would be hard though.
I do agree though that for those of us who manage their own servers and services $30+ a year seems steep for a simple dns name registration, although the costs/options have come down since a few years ago.
Hence my use of a .com through a budget registrar. I don't need support, just point it at my nameservers kthxbai. -- Phillip Hutchings http://www.sitharus.com/
