Then do it the other way. We don't do functional and system specs any more. Develop a prototype, throw it at the users and then evolve it to their requirements. Linux is a classic example if this methodology. At its core the SRS is a pretty simple shared access database with selective update rights. Would an Open Source prototype SRS kick things into life?
