I have been looking at broadband in the islands - including Fiji - thanks to a grant from http://isif.asia and my friends at http://nsrc.org/.

Grants. The ISIF Asia Grants provide funding to support research and deployment of projects that contribute to Internet development in the Asia Pacific region.


It happens that Telecom Fiji, Vodafone Fiji, and Fintel are all owned by the same company (Amalgamated Telecommunications Holdings, or ATH) but they have separate networks and don't necessarily peer all of their address space locally in Fiji. Separate from the ATH group is Digicel.

From the latency table below you can derive a little of how each of their networks are held together - keeping in mind Southern Cross is the only way from Fiji to the rest of the world... right now.

Loss and standard deviation figures point to congestion on Telecom and Vodafone Fiji and clean pipes for Fintel and Digicel.

These figures are all collected from major data centres (15 in total) to targets inside each network's core - so this is "as good as it gets". I don't have more than a cursory knowledge of their access networks inside Fiji so you're on your own if you're outside of Suva.
