We are considering upgrading the modem firmware in our cisco AS5200 to support V.90 connections.
Modem compatibility is a moving target - even if you have the latest and greatest on your NAS, it's very likely the V.90 client code in even shiny new modems people are buying today may be even a year (or more) old. Because the NAS' end is wholy digital, its perception of line quality (including critical measures like "eye" quality) will always be better than what the client sees. It's the client that will make the majority of decisions as to what speed is best, when to reneg or retrain, etc. Of course, you have only limited control over the clients. Unfortunately the only real way you will be able to tell, for any given environment, is try it and see in a small scale, controlled trail. No vendor can provide you with the proverbial rock-solid gaurantee that a wildly hetreogenous populution of clients from many different manufacturers, firmware versions, etc will respond well to a given implementation. -- Josh Bailey (mailto:joshbailey(a)lucent.com) lucent->ins->software->alameda[CA] /* 1601 Harbor Bay Parkway, Alameda, CA 94502 (room 1601/1108C) voice: +1-510-747-3367 skytel: 1-800-skytel2/mailto:1198428(a)skytel.com */ --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog
