It all depends on what you want the UPS to do and protect you against.
It also depends on how/if you want to monitor it.
It ALSO depends if you want to be able to switch your equipment back onto utility feed to do work on the UPS.

I know there are people around who considered all these things and decided that it was worth the risk to just run utility power.

There are some people around who specialise in this sort of work.  I'll send you some names off list.
