Using anything at googles SDN managed ip network as a metric/benchmark is foolish at best.
My first thought was that this is kind of off-topic for NZNOG. But I think it would be valid information for what hosts are actually good to test to. And I don't know if there's any kind of worldwide list of sites that are ok with being monitored by a lot of people, and want to publicise...
I'm sure that it's very common to receive a lot of pings to 8.8.8.8, 4.2.2.2, www.google.com, www.facebook.com etc. but these are either anycast or give different ip's depending on source.
It's reasonably common to want to be able to monitor performance, but to me it's packet loss that is the real concern rather than ping time as packet loss can easily translate into delays and timeouts.
It's worth noting that some major sites, including Google, can and do limit the amount of ICMP ping traffic and will sometimes drop traffic if it exceeds their overall thresholds. Anyone who assumes these large providers are infallible sources of testing accuracy is in for a nasty surprise. :-) regards, Jethro -- Jethro Carr www.jethrocarr.com
