The folks from Dalnet are pestering Citylink to provide free hosting for a server they'll provide. I couldn't find any list of nodes on dalnet, so I have no feeling for how many there may already be in NZ. So I guess my question is, are these folks legit, is it a worthwhile thing to be associated with, would anybody use it if we did set it up? I have vague recollections of IRC nodes in NZ attracting significant DOS traffic in the past - does that sort of thing still happen? Shuold I run screaming from the room?
Most people that contact the likes of ISP's/telco's etc to provide irc servers do so as they are pre-pubescent teenagers that are out for "the glory and power" of "IRCops" Networks such as DALnet, the segmented parts of EFnet and Undernet will not approach anyone and request them to host a server on their network. You can also be sure that inviting these people onto your network will mean an increase in DDoS attacks directed at NZ in general and your network in particular. As for current nodes in New Zealand, there will be none for EFnet, Undernet or DALnet. -- Steve. PS: DALnet were DDoSed out of existance a few months back for near on 3-4 weeks worth of traffic to pretty much every node on their network - when most nodes are well connected (dual DS3's direct to the US backbone) and a DDoS takes them _all_ out then you know that the attacks of a few years back have simply gotten worse.
