Aardvark (aardvark.co.nz) made a comment this morning, which touched directly on something I put to the select committee (Law and Order) in my submission on the new hacking laws.
That is - that with the law proposed (which is the result of a law commission report 54 - "computer misuse" - May 1999 see www.lawcom.govt.nz for a copy) governing hacking, interception and so on, soon to come into force, how is it going to be enforced?
Enforcement of criminal law is by police prosecuting after an investigation. Which poses one of the most important questions of all - do the police have the resources, background and skills to make investigations into serious computer crime?, or computer crime for that matter?
My recommendation to the select committee was to have a special unit for computer crime, which is adequately funded, which solely investigates these types of offences.
I am interested to hear some feedback. - I have copies of a number of documents related to this issue - and if you would like for me to let you know how to get your hands on this information please let me know.
David Buckingham

Would it be off topic to discuss the proposed new hacking laws?
I am referring to the Crimes Amendment Bill (No.6) and its SOP 85.
I see no reason why not... it's certainly more relevant than a lot of what is discussed here.
