To make it fair, and persuadethe vendors cough up, can we each make a list
of the vendor equipment that we use, tally it up and ask each of them to
contribute a percentage towards the venue?
I would expect that they would expect some signage, but that would be the
limit.
To make it fair, we should all have to travel... how about Taupo, Rotorua,
Hawkes Bay???
I will chat to my MD tomorrow, and see if Compaq would be interested in a
share of the sponsorship. We might push our Servers and PCs but we sell any
network gear (Cisco/Nortel/3com/Entersys/Alcatel/Extreme... adinfinitum)
I might even give a short presentation of my wireless network infrastructure
for the NZ Golf Open (not that any of us are really interested in golf). For
some reason that I cannot really understand, they wouldn't let me lay fibre
under the fairways!!!
Others may like to present awkward/stupid solutions/reasons for problem
customers.
comments or am I pissing in the wind?
Regards
Russell Sharpe

Well if it's thoughts you wanted then here you go. (Man this has been a high post day)

NZNOG People,
There are now over three hundred addresses subscribed to this list. Most of those addresses seem likely to correspond to people with an interest in network operation. There were very pleasing turnouts at last year's Christmas functions.I wonder whether it's time to try organising a more serious gathering.
Sounds cool - it was great to put so many faces to names. I think it's hampered my chances of ever getting a job in NZ now
I do not assume that it would be possible to do the same thing here, even if that was what people wanted. I do wonder whether there would be enough interest to justify trying to organise a face to face conference to be held this year. I'd welcome opinions on that from subscribers who might be willing to attend. (Please don't bother replying to express apathy - I can deduce that from silence.)
I'd be interested in hearing what people think about the Vendor vs Non-Vendor approach.
On the one hand making it Non-Vendor keeps it like the list. A place for people to swap ideas and now have Vendors jump in with an axe to grind.
On the other hand. Vendors with axe's to grind == money. And they can spring for beer/giveaways/etc.
Hard to know what people want to do here.
Having Roger host the xmas functions at Cisco was REALLY good of him. But it did make it REALLY hard on me and the other Vendors. I'd like to see the Xmas parties somewhere indepandant next year.
We should assume that there would be some sort of charge for attendance, reflecting the cost of the venue, food and coffee, and quite possibly some effort to meet some costs of presenting. My guess is that we'd need enough content for close to a day to make the thing worth doing.
Yep - thats the other issue. And I'm speaking selfishly here. If it's a Non-Vendor event then I've got buckleys chance of flying in to present.
a) because I would have pretty much nothing to present that is not Vendor influenced b) my work is never going to fly me over unless I can troop the flag.
If you are able to embrace the Vendor then the content will be more forthcoming (as will the spiff)
One option would be a stand-alone event either in Auckland or Wellington (i.e. Auckland?) though our non-existant financial structure might cause problems with that. Another would be to clip ourselves onto the side of some moderately relevant conference such as that now being planned by UniForum NZ for mid-year, in the hope of avoiding all that tedious mucking about with venues and things. (No, I have not discussed this with UniForum NZ, though at least one of their board is sympathetic. :{)* )
Uni-Who? Are they still having conferences? Oh and it would probably need to be Auckland if the Xmas parties were a reflection of the relative weights (not mass) of the readership.
For now, I'm primarily looking for expressions of interest in attending, along with suggestions about more or less convenient places and dates. Though of course to hear from volunteers to present material or do other work would be nice.
I'll present, suggestions of material welcome.
Yes, I do realise that final decisions on attendance are bound to be driven by things like the location, the quality of the programme and whether any of your routers have had the magic smoke come out lately. Right now I'm chiefly seeking an idea of whether this is worth proceeding with further.
Yeah I think that a Day worth of stuff is not out of the question. Followed by a night of beer drinking.
