At the NZNOG meeting at Waikato we discussed domain names for the Internet Exchanges in Auckland and Wellington. I have registered the domain names aix.net.nz and wix.net.nz on behalf of the NZ Internet community. The registered Administrative contact for these domains is the Internet Society of New Zealand (ISOCNZ) who will hold these domains on behalf of the community.
I would like to pursue the idea of registering the 2nd level domain ix.nz.
Does anyone else feel that this could be a useful addition to the New Zealand DNS system?
<soapbox>At the risk of starting a religious war, I think the current second-level domains in NZ are rather pointless. Here's a quick wc -l on transferred second-level zone files under nz:
fep3[7]% wc -l nz.*-backup 726 nz.ac-backup 75428 nz.co-backup 294 nz.cri-backup 902 nz.gen-backup 997 nz.govt-backup 20 nz.iwi-backup 41 nz.mil-backup 2209 nz.net-backup 2164 nz.org-backup 730 nz.school-backup 83511 total
90% of the NZ DNS lives under .co.nz. If we had Auckland and Wellington exchanges registered under .ix.nz, then that sub-zone would represent 0.01%. Is this a useful division to make?
It seems to me that there is nothing to lose (and only simplicity to gain) by allowing NZ-based entities to register myname.nz.</soapbox>
However, having said that, an .ix.nz sld makes about as much sense as everything else :)
My views are not necessarily those of CLEAR, blah, blah, blah.
I'm inclined to agree with Joe - I see little value in increasing the number of domains in NZ. I'd like to see the number reduced if possible and I think that a single '.nz' domain would be a sensible way of achieving that. Having said that it may too late for that as I don't believe we can disabuse the general notion that the DNS is some sort of X.500/white pages directory service and that people must be in the 'correct' domain. I'll put on my ISCONZ councillor hat here. For those who wish to advocate the creation of new domains or the opening up of the '.nz' space as Joe suggests can I remind you of the ISOCNZ policy document on this at http://www.isocnz.org.nz/lev2dom.htm. I would support the opening up of the '.nz' space but I'll add the disclaimer that these are my own views and not those of Netlink or ISOCNZ. andy -- Mailto:Andy.Linton(a)netlink.co.nz Tel: +64 4 916 5312 Post: Netlink, PO Box 5358, Lambton Quay, Wellington, New Zealand PGP public key: http://www.pgp.com/keyserver/pks-lookup.cgi -- --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog
