Next step up from "desktop" switch is "web managed". The "web managed" switches typically have QoS built into them (and are not configurable) :-) You need to go up a level or two again to get switches with QoS you can switch off and that have the performance to make it unnecessary. -----Original Message----- From: Joe Abley [mailto:jabley(a)hopcount.ca] Sent: Tuesday, 31 March 2009 10:12 a.m. To: Philip D'Ath Cc: nznog Subject: Re: [nznog] QoS-IXPs On 30 Mar 2009, at 16:59, Philip D'Ath wrote:
I can set up a Gigabit desktop switch, plug in server and some workstations, and run them through VoIP phones generating 96Kb/s audio streams, and cause the audio streams to break down in quality - even though the pipes are considerably larger than the traffic I am trying to protect.
I suspect shifting to 10Gb/s pipes would make no difference.
Seems like a good example of needing to spend money on QoS because your network is inadequate. I suspect you might need to find a gigabit switch that doesn't have "desktop" in its name :-) Joe _______________________________________________ NZNOG mailing list NZNOG(a)list.waikato.ac.nz http://list.waikato.ac.nz/mailman/listinfo/nznog
