You mis-underestimate how cobbled that system is, nothing with it is
simple.
Moving the Auth would be easier, your right there, still not completely
plain sailing.

Argueably it'd be easier to shift the DNS hosting to alternative authorative nameservers that aren't recursive than update legacy configurations. Given time it'll become just a trickle. But then there'll be isolated problems of a domain not working for one or two people.
The thing is - it only hurts customers who are leaving - not a lot of motivation there.
