FYI, in case someone could come across this problem again. The answer is the pinout of NTU and router cable. We made a RJ-45 cable that cross-wires pin 1&2 to 4&5, and vice versa. It worked straightaway. The pinouts on Cisco router and Telecom NTU are all fixed. You would think they are pretty much standard but apparently not. Regards, Dennis

Hiya Dennis.
We are having a mysterious problem with a channelized E1. I am wondering if you have any clue. Any input would be very much appreciated.
We have been trying to commission a new 512K leased circuit but not successful. At the central end the NTU(CSU/DSU) is connected to a Synchronous serial port on AS5200 via X21. At the branch end the NTU is connected to a Balanced Channelized E1 port on 3620 via G.703 RJ-45. We have done loopback test and located the source of problem. It's between the 3620 and NTU at branch. We brought back the 120-Ohm RJ-45 cable and checked the cable OK. And Telecom has double-checked the circuit as well. It seems that the router is not talking to NTU at all. I have listed the router config and the output of show controller etc. The IOS is 11.3(3).
Hmmm. My suspicion would be NTU Config. Perhaps the NTU isn't speaking CRC4 framing? If it's a Telecom cct, then they'll possibly have an OpenTel NTU on it, and you can specify all sorts of things through the cryptic menuing system, inlcuding possibly the linecode as well.
The other thing that I've seen before is that the correct timeslots aren't mapped through to the x.21 card in the NTU. All things that relate back to the NTU, and how it's configured that may not be able to be confirmed remotely by the Telco network management stations.
Just an idea, mind. Wouldn't be the first time I've been wrong.
