Bassically let me explain myself. I'm working with Idiots - who don't know the differnce beteen ram or ip. So - when I say "Its a router - its job is to direct network traffic" - they'll say somthing like "Whoa - they must be pretty big - isn't there only one of those in the world" and a multitude of silly questions. Don't get me wrong silly questions arn't that bad - its just when lots of ppl ask the same questions it gets really annoying. So - it would be great for me to say - this was a cisco 2501 series router, it is uesed to (we all know) - when it was new it was worth $X, and now its worth $x/100 etc. Also - let me be honest, there is a double meaning or purhaps hidden agenda behind asking for this stuff. Firstly it is NOT so that I can have a cool network (make with older tech) at home, or purhaps so that I can sell it - or anything like that. (To prove it - if I mess with something worthwile - a 2500 series router for example that doesn't work -and I make it work good - I'll happily give it back). Firstly - I like to tinker with stuff. Since I'm only 16 years old it is hard trying to get cisco gear, and people get really upset when you tell them that your going to tinker with the nice new shinny router that you've just installed. So - it would be alot of fun (And somthing to do to pass the time) just to mess with really old and/or broken hardware - not nessasarily tring to make it work - just messing. Especially so that I have a better understanding of actually how stuff does stuff - so eventually I can be a better/more effective employee. Also - remember I am asking for gear that isn't being used anyway - purhaps piled in a corner or some other equal place - left where it fell from the last upgrade or somthing. I'm not asking for 7500 series routers which arn't being used right now - or a 4000 that doesn't have enough ram etc. I mean more like some cisco alphabet soup products - or purhaps a 2500 that got droped a long way and doesn't light up at all anymore. Stuff like that. Effectivly junk! Also - my other purpose. I really like cisco stuff. Becasue they are such cool things - 'cause of how well they are constructed designed. And if nothing else - it would be cool to have a bunch of boxes with "Cisco Systems" tags on them :D. So - to just to reiterate. I don't want this stuff so that I can make it work and sell it - or have a huuge network at home. I'm doing it primarily 'cause cisco is cool, and I LOVE to mess with hardware. Anything at all would be more than muchly appreciated - and would go to a "good home" and be messed with/worked on for months to come. Thanks alot - even for your time to read this. :D On Mon, 1 Apr 2002, Craig Spiers wrote:
If your only looking at the value of equipment, surely you dont actually have to have the gear.. You only need an approx value of what its worth?
I Personally dont think people on this list are stupid enough to hand gear over for that reason eh..

: Hello all,
Sorry for the off topic post, and comerical nature of this post. But, I'm looking at doing a project about the devaluation of equipment. How routers/switches/hubs etc. etc. which cost $$$'s of dollars, then become almost worthless only a few years latter. So for the project it would be good to have some old gear on hand.
So - I was wondering if people had old cisco switches/routers/anything, or any other branded equipment - thats old/broken/not relyable anymore that they wouldn't mind parting with. If you are in the hamilton/Auckland area, I'll come and get gear, or pay for shipping. I'm even happy to give a couple of dollars for stuff that still works okay.
Thanks alot! - it'd be very thankful for ANYTHING.
(BTW - please message me off list). --snip--
