Ethernet in particular, but cellphones too, have changed beyond all recognition. Bob Metcalfe's Ethernet ran at 3 Mbps, over a single thick co-axial cable, with shared access via CSMA/CD, Carrier Sense, Multiple Access with Collision Detection, with Manchester encoding to run the same bits per second as the fundamental frequency.
From memory, it's actually HALF the fundamental frequency. I.e., 3Mbps required 6MHz. That's because bits are signaled by transitions. The advantage is that it's self clocking. -- Michael Newbery IP Architect IT&P: Architecture Vodafone New Zealand Ltd.
