The outage of ns99.waikato.ac.nz was not unexpected. But the length of
the outage *was* unexpected.
The University had to power down some of its comms gear at 4am Sunday
so the power could be changed to a different phase on our UPS
(we have a bad phase inbalance).
Some machines had a previous history of not liking the main IP switch being
powered off, especially those Intel boxes with DEC ethernet cards.
And Domainz2 (aka ns99) is one of those.
It took a long time to get ns99 working because it seemed to be destroying
switch ports. Several switch ports had to be tried before one was found
that ns99 liked :-) .
I would like to point out that the only time connectivity to ns99 is critical
is about 4:30pm each working day when the zone file are reloaded. At all
other times ns99 has the secondary nameservers of *.nz backing it up.
