The outage of ns99.waikato.ac.nz was not unexpected. But the length of the outage *was* unexpected. The University had to power down some of its comms gear at 4am Sunday so the power could be changed to a different phase on our UPS (we have a bad phase inbalance). Some machines had a previous history of not liking the main IP switch being powered off, especially those Intel boxes with DEC ethernet cards. And Domainz2 (aka ns99) is one of those. It took a long time to get ns99 working because it seemed to be destroying switch ports. Several switch ports had to be tried before one was found that ns99 liked :-) . I would like to point out that the only time connectivity to ns99 is critical is about 4:30pm each working day when the zone file are reloaded. At all other times ns99 has the secondary nameservers of *.nz backing it up. - Rex Croft ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Aug 1999 09:26:58 +1200 From: Chris Wedgwood <cw(a)f00f.org> Subject: nz99.waikato.ac.nz Looks like nz99.waikato.ac.nz is hosed -- any idea who gets called to restart this? -cw --------- To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog
