Hi All, At the APNIC 32 meeting in Busan, there will be a panel discussion of particular interest to those of us in New Zealand. The panel is on Inter-networking during natural disasters (full details at the end of this email). I've been asked to be on one of the panellists and while I can share what my experiences were around the time of the earthquake, I know that some of you have much better stories and experiences to learn from. I'd like to be able to present some of these experiences at this panel so that the knowledge that we've gained as a community can help others which may be in a similar situation in the future. So if you were involved with any aspect of networking during or after the Christchurch Earthquake then I'd like to hear about it. If you were on the ground pulling fibre. If you were trying to arrange access to condemned buildings If you were finding out if you really can pour diesel into a live generator If you were in another city trying to arrange access to contractors etc etc etc I'll take anything really because it's all worth learning from. I don't want to make this process too onerous on everyone, so feel free to get your experiences to me in whatever way you like. Write me a long email (on or off list) Write me a short email (on or off list) Write me two bullet points Tell me what worked Tell me what didn't work Tell me what you wished you'd had Tell me what you wished you hadn't had You can also email me a contact number and we can have a chat if you don't feel like typing. Thanks everyone, here's hoping that we can make it easier for anyone else going through something similar. Oh and don't forget there are loads of remote participation options for APNIC conferences, so tune in. Cheers, Dean http://meetings.apnic.net/32/program/panel Panel discussion: Inter-networking during natural disasters When: Thursday, 1 September 2011 Where: Grand ballroom Time: 09:00 - 10:30 (UTC +9) Moderator: Philip Smith, APNIC Inter-networks play a vital role in our daily lives and they have become a critical infrastructure. However, Inter-networks face a number of operational challenges during large-scale natural disasters. Understanding operational challenges and their impact on social infrastructure as well as the reliance of our daily lives on the continuity of our economy can help us optimise existing networks and network operational practices. It will also help plan the improvement of future relief practices and deal with the challenges of reconstructing network connectivity and services in the devastated areas. Panelists will share their experiences and insight about the earthquakes affecting Christchurch, New Zealand and the earthquake and Tsunami that hit East Japan. They will also cover some of the operational impact and lessons learned from these natural disasters.
