Hi Jed, I use OM3 on my 8G FC all the time, no problems. Wiki says you can even use OM1 for up to 20m if you want. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fibre_Channel#Optical_carrier_medium_variants Matt. On 31/03/2014 8:13 p.m., Jed Laundry wrote:
Hi Craig,
Sorry, missing from my post is that I've already got a box of OM3 cords that I could use. I just wanted to make sure that I'm not crazy, that OM3 is suitable for 8G FC, given the vendor's persistence that 5m OM4 is The Right Way.
Thanks, Jed.

Excuse my ignorance, I try to avoid orange/aqua cables...
We recently had a rack of servers + SAN installed with 8Gb FC, and long story short, the vendor will only supply & install 5m OM4 cables.

AFAICT, OM4 is to OM3 what G.657A2 is to G.652 - completely interchangeable, especially for such a short run, just don't expect to wrap it around a pencil. And so I can swap out these stupidly long cables with properly measured OM3.
Is this sensible?
