Apart from the obvious net neutrality rhetoric why would you have a
stateful device in your forwarding path. And you'd better hope that
google don't decide to do authoritive hosting on those servers now or
in the future (although we all know they shouldn't)

Random thought ... how bad would it be for a service provider to locally redirect 8.8.8.8/32 into their own DNS forwarders?
I mean it would probably violate the Principle of Least Astonishment, at least for folk who are paying attention, but random users who have been told that "it's better to use 8.8.8.8" without fully understanding the implications might get better performance...
