It appears most of the cheap VM providers use colocrossing's network and it looks like they broadcast stormed (reading between the lines) their LA network and that broke everything. One provider I'm aware of reported crashes in another industry forum. Not everyone was affected though; guess I got lucky because the OpenVZ nodes I maintain didn't have problems.
