The NZ-only BGP stats being collected on maggie.automagic.org have turned out to be less than entirely reliable, mainly due to the fact that I never came up with a good and consistent heuristic for determining whether a route corresponded to infrastructure which is in New Zealand or not. ASes which extend between countries, new transit and peering arrangements between NZ operators and those overseas, and peculiar redistribution loops and other leaks all conspired to pollute most of the data to the extent that it's not really good for much, as far as I can tell. What might be better would be to avoid the geopolitical distinction altogether, and just accept as much of a full table from everybody as possible, with open access for people who want to troubleshoot or collect the data for research, à la route-views.oregon-ix.net. Unfortunately maggie is a 45MHz SPARC Classic, maxed out with 96MB of RAM, and exposing her to the trauma of even one view of the full table would likely cause her extreme discomfort. If someone else feels like donating a router to the cause, to be used for such a purpose, I think that would be a Good Thing to have, but maggie is not that router. So, if anybody is going to be upset if the data currently published from maggie.automagic.org goes away, or stops being current, could they drop me a line off-list? 'When Debbie Monahan takes up her duties in mid-May the country will, for the first time, "have a person solely focused on the internet and making it work in New Zealand", says InternetNZ vice-president Rick Shera.' Maybe someone should tell Rick that making the internet work in New Zealand has precisely nothing whatsoever to do with the nz TLD. I would have been more encouraged by a statement which says "we expect the new Domain name commissioner to be a registrant-funded scapegoat for the continuing disappointment experienced by Domainz customers, and to be a focus point to pull all the ICANN-obsessed hot-air generators into small, poorly-ventilated rooms where they can be dispatched cleanly and efficiently using poison gas"] - To unsubscribe from nznog, send email to majordomo(a)list.waikato.ac.nz where the body of your message reads: unsubscribe nznog
