Speaking from personal experience in Wellington around 2005-2006, I found Unlimited Potential http://up.org.nz/ a great way to meet people that work around the industry and hear what it's really like on the ground and also what hiring managers look for in a candidate.

The most important thing I learned from this experience is not to expect any handouts, but take comfort in the fact that most people are very supportive and willing to hear and share ideas. The hard news to take, is that no matter how good you are, you generally have to start somewhere simple and prove yourself for some years. This is definitely true for larger employers, but the more people you talk to the more opportunities you will discover.

Feel free to message me off list with any questions, always happy to use my experiences in helping others on a similar path.
Rowan Smith

Cheers
Rowan

Hey,

Nothing that I know of; are you volunteering to organise?

Thanks,
Jed.
