Reason for wanting published registration information is principally for finding out contact details, in cases of (a) network abuse, (b) spam or (c) operational problems. Plus it's interesting to poke around in :)
The web based interface at Domainz meets this need for us. It does not matter if the data is a little old.
Is there any particular reason for wanting this in WHOIS format since the information is available via the web?
For us its not a question of whether we have http or whois access, but rather the data elements available meet our needs and the information is live. The current service does not meet either of these needs for us. A quick example is answering the question "Is this name available for registration?" We cant issue one request and get an authorative answer. These are the steps we currently have to take:- a) Check name has valid syntax b) Check name is not on our own offensive name list c) Check name is not same as a TLD Above checks are not made by Domainz "Check whether a name is registered" script. d) Lookup Domainz site to see if its registered e) Check Domainz pending queue to see if another request is known to be ahead of ours f) Submit template to Domainz for processing Unfortunately, due to Domainz system design, the pending queue is not updated in real time, so there are always periods of time when they may have a request for a name in the queue ahead of us, and we have no way of knowing until we get a rejection, sometimes hours later. This is only one example.
