Specifically I'm talking about the Route Registry function, having a centralised database providing the arbitration details for all New Zealand Route Selection. This could double as a route server if located at suitable peering points. The Merit US$200 thing is fine, but this is where I'm trying to be community minded. It seems ISOCNZ or whoever could provide a sub-registry function under Merit, and then could offer a lower cost service for the benefit of the New Zealand Internet community. Something I once thought ISOCNZ was desiring to do. I have already had interest from smaller AS holders asking if we will provide a registry service to them as our customers, as they would rather not have to pay the US for such a service. But in doing that their portability between providers will be further complicated, as they may well have to change registry providers when they move. Additionally a resource owned and managed in New Zealand could provide simpler tools and features for the New Zealand community to use, and if all the major providers would support it, will help encourage people to keep the data current. Joe's point about Merit is where this get's interesting to me. Obviously, WIX and APE should move to a Arbitrated network in my opinion, if you are providing the route server, then you provide the only rational filtering point.
Not quite sure what you mean by "arbitrated" in that context there, Arron -- do you mean a unilateral model whereby everybody peers once with the route server, and the policy is applied centrally?
On the issue of running the database though, this data may well reach beyond the realm of WIX and APE and their customers, for instance NetGate could use it to Clear directly etc. Wouldn't it be nice if we could trust that ISOCNZ and DomaiNZ could provide a useful cost-effective and more regionally acurate alternative to Merit !!!
I really don't see a problem with using the Merit DB. US$200 per year is about four hours worth of professional systems admin/programmer time in keeping a RPSL database fed and watered. Sounds pretty cheap to me, and Merit have done a good job up to now.
Perhaps Domainz could settle the Merit invoices for all NZ ISPs instead, if they're in a hurry to spend some of their money...
... oh, and buy us some more routers :)
