Auckland, like most NZ universities uses BGP to prefer routes learned from the NZ NREN (KAREN) as the traffic is free. The issue is therefore that KAREN doesn't have connectivity to the root servers inside NZ. If Karen goes down, Auckland should start using NZ based root servers, but I don't think that has happened recently. I understand that KAREN are working on improving their DNS service. We currently record instance names for the .nz DNS servers. We will have a look at adding those for the roots. Richard. On 17/04/11 13:35, Gaurab Raj Upadhaya wrote:

There's actually no L-Root server in New Zealand right now -- I suspect that Auckland University is seeing one of the instances hosted by AARNET in Australia. I'm guessing, though, since I don't have a test point to see directly.
25ms seems like the right time for packets RTT between Auckland and Sydney.
I'll restate, I observe that the monitoring node at Auckland Uni. doesn't seem to have any connectivity to the numerous anycasted root DNS servers inside NZ.
